2 Factories of the Future Manufacturing: Key to our Economy Since some years the important of manufacturing has been recognised by EU and its member states but also in the US Despite the crisis, manufacturing means a lot for Europe: 14 % Direct jobs 67 % Exports 65 % Business R&D Expenditure Development of more competitive & sustainable industry needs support => Factories of the Future contractual Public- Private Partnership (cppp)

3 Public Private Partnerships (PPP) - Background What is a PPP? European level PPPs in the area of R&D&I are a cooperation by the EU and private partners Aim to strengthen European industrial base, create sustainable industry in Europe & secure jobs in Europe PPPs represent a pragmatic shift from previous programmes: focus on industry relevant research roadmaps and pre-competitive co-operation European Commission launched the European Recovery Plan in 2008/09 and created PPPs for three sectors: Factories of the Future, Green Cars & Energy Efficient Buildings Horizon 2020: These continue along with 5 new cppps (Sustainable Process Industry, 5G Future Internet, Robotics, Photonics & High-Performance Computing)

5 Factories of the Future PPP Recap on Developments Industry re-engaged in FP projects: statistics show industrial participation of more than 50% (compared to some 20-30% for total FP7) time-to-contract in first call was 8.5 months Ad-hoc Industry Advisory Group (AIAG) has worked well: ensures that roadmap reflects industrial needs

6 Factories of the Future PPP Italian Participation FP7: Italy contributed 14% & received 8.7% However received about 90m (~14%) in Factories of the Future 119 Italian enterprises & organisations participating to date

12 Factories of the Future Call 2014/2015 Draft Call Topics FoF : Process optimisation of manufacturing assets 2014 Call Deadline 20 March 2014 (At least one of the following) CPS-based process optimisation Collaborative and mobile manufacturing Towards zero-failure laser-based manufacturing Support action (consensus building for a factory-wide interoperability framework for CPS engineering & manufacturing environments) FoF : Manufacturing processes for complex structures and geometries with efficient use of material Manufacturing process control & monitoring strategies based on integrated models of both processes and machines Innovative process concepts & tools, including design supported by computational modelling, for resource efficiency in complex geometries manufacturing. Innovative machinery improving resource efficiency from the current state of the art in complex geometries manufacturing Remanufacturing & recycling, with novel or improved use of waste streams.

13 Factories of the Future Call 2014/2015 FoF : Global energy and other resources efficiency in manufacturing enterprises Research activities should be multi-disciplinary and address all of the following areas: Energy & resource consumption data collection along the entire value chain Development & implementation of new business models aimed at reducing energy & resource consumption along whole or a relevant part of the value chain Clustering of factories, suppliers or other company in order to implement common resources optimization Development of strategies for enabling energy characterisation of enterprises as a means for obtaining energy certifications coherent with Eco-design provisions Development of coherent detailed business cases FoF : Developing smart factories that are attractive to workers Methodologies & tools for efficient design or re-adaptation of production facilities based on co-evolving product-process-production systems New methods & technologies for optimised take-up & use of workers' knowledge, to stimulate team interactions & enhance work related satisfaction Integration of innovative production technologies supporting increased productivity & flexibility. Incorporating aspects linked to education, workers' training and attractiveness to the young & elderly (e.g. in-factory teaching, 'factory-lab' concepts)

14 Factories of the Future Call 2014/2015 FoF : Innovative product-service design using manufacturing intelligence. Collaborative management of engineering knowledge & its multi-directional exchange between product design, service design & manufacturing Tools & methodologies to effectively involve customers, suppliers & other relevant organisations across value chain Multi-disciplinary search, simulation & optimisation of designs & innovative visualisation tools involving intuitive tools. Quantification of overall (time-to-market) improvements & reduction of lifecycle CO2 footprint of new products. FoF : Symbiotic human-robot collaborations for safe and dynamic multimodal manufacturing systems Demonstrating the multimodal manufacturing systems Safety of the worker Human-Robot interaction FoF : Support for the enhancement of the impact of FoF PPP projects Coordination actions shall aim in particular to actively cluster existing activities under the FoF PPP. The initiative, which is expected to last 2 years, will require close collaboration with relevant industrial associations and technology transfer programmes.

15 Factories of the Future Call 2014/2015 FoF : ICT-enabled modelling, simulation, analytics and forecasting technologies Innovative modelling, simulation, analytics & forecasting tools for manufacturing at large Integrated modelling, simulation & information management systems Support Actions: Road mapping & constituency building for novel ICT-enabled concepts in manufacturing FoF : ICT Innovation for Manufacturing SMEs (I4MS) Phase 2 of I4MS this objective addresses the adoption of the next generation of ICT advances in the manufacturing domain. Focus is on emerging innovative technologies & processes FoF : Manufacturing of custom made parts for personalised products 2015 Call Deadline 9 December 2014 Development & integration of advanced design & manufacturing technologies able to transform new product-service data descriptions & protocols into manufacturing operations & processes exploiting Development of new machines & processes integrating advanced materials for the manufacturing of personalised products Seamless data integration across the process and supply chains for the fast production and distribution of custom made parts and products Methodologies & tools for management & running of effective value chains for fast production & delivery of personalised products

16 Factories of the Future Call 2014/2015 FoF : Flexible production systems based on integrated tools for rapid reconfiguration of machinery and robots. Integrated tools for management of agile production systems as a whole & fast reconfigurable individual machines & robots, optimising changeover times & costs Standardisation of communication protocols & data structures fitting plug & produce philosophy Protocols for interconnecting production system information with higher level plant management systems Integration of automatic monitoring & optimisation of energy usage in production system Demonstration of integrated solution in at least one existing production environment FoF : Industrial technologies for advanced joining and assembly processes of multimaterials Joining & assembly processes that will lead to maximise performance of the joints &/or to facilitate recycling Implementation of numerical simulation techniques, including computational multi-scale modelling Development of high efficient, cost-effective & flexible surface condition solutions (e.g. surface modification, thermal treatments, gap avoidance) to provide joints with the maximum performance Implementation & set up of reliable, efficient & automated non-destructive inspection techniques for joint quality evaluation, together with in-situ monitoring & control systems for critical variables of the joining operations

17 Factories of the Future Call 2014/2015 FoF : Re-use and re-manufacturing technologies and equipment for sustainable product lifecycle management Eco-innovative approaches for product design which are capable to take into account reuse & re-manufacturing aspects for enhanced product recovery and spare parts/services support. New manufacturing and equipment concepts for re-use & re-manufacturing, with improved resource efficiency & service lifetime New technologies & automation solutions for effective disassembly/separation & recovery of advanced materials Generation & validation of new business models to improve economic viability of closedloop life cycles which make use of systemic approaches for product life-cycle management. FoF : Integrated design and management of production machinery and processes RTD & innovation activities should aim at developing & testing suitable model-based approaches for production machinery & at demonstrating power of model-driven approaches Development of integrated & accurate simulation models & algorithms for model-based control of production machinery based on cross-disciplinary input & actual machine lifecycle parameters Tool programming strategies that are easy to use & can be rapidly modified or re-adapted by workers on the machine Demonstration of reliability of model-based machines with respect to production accuracy/quality, maintainability & lifecycle return-on-investment
