Off-rad Vehicles generally can be verall much heavier and a much harder t define centre f gravity than nrmal vehicles fr the fllwing reasns; Fur Wheel Drive Heavy duty cmpnents Heavier, larger wheels and tyres Heavy accessries such as bull bars, tw bar, extra fuel tank, extra spare wheel, rf racks, car fridge, winch, etc. Off-rad vehicles can be harder t pick up crrectly due t; Pick-up pints can be hard t determine. Jack pints n ff-rad vehicles are nt necessarily the same as the lifting pints fr hists. Pick-up pints may be cvered in mud r nt strng enugh due t excess crrsin. Usually the pick-up pints r n the chassis which can be further in t reach. Side steps are a cmmn accessry n ff-rad vehicles but can be hit the hist arms befre the pads tuch the pick-up pints. Must have the right pad extensin accessries t lift these vehicles. Picking up n suspensin pints can be dangerus n sme suspensin setups (i.e. when the vehicle lifts, the weight f the wheel pulls the suspensin dwn, this leads t a change in angle f the suspensin and can frce the vehicle ff the pick up pad.) Read the manual and get familiar with perating instructins as well as yu pre-peratinal checks and maintenance; is everything in gd wrking rder? Befre yu lift a car n a Tw Pst Hist, yu need t identify the crrect pick up pints. Due t their cnstructin, this can be a lt harder n Off-Rad Vehicles. 4 Off-Rad Vehicles n Tw Pst Hists What are the Majr Safety Pints t lk at when using a Tw Pst Hist with Off-Rad Vehicles? When lifting Off-Rad Vehicles n Tw Pst Hists, yu need t be especially careful f yur pick up pints and yur weight distributin. Many wrkshps will use a 4 Pst Hist fr lifting Off- Rad Vehicles that are ver the 60/40 frnt t rear weight distributin. Only use apprpriate lifting adaptrs and make sure they re clean and in gd cnditin. Check yur lifting pints; If they re muddy r greasy yu want t clean the area. If there are signs f rust, yu need t make sure that the area will structurally be strng enugh t supprt the weight f the vehicle. Knw yur weights; Hw much des the vehicle weigh? Hw much d the lad and accessries weigh? Where is the centre f gravity? If yu are remving cmpnents, hw much d they weigh? And, Hw will that affect the centre f gravity when they are remved? 5 Off-Rad Vehicles n Tw Pst Hists Safe Lifting Tips fr Off-Rad Vehicles n Tw Pst Hists When yu ve gt yu arms and pick-up pads in psitin, raise the hist until the pads just start t take the weight and duble check that everything is where is shuld be; the weight shuld be supprted by all 4 pads, i.e. yu must see all 4 pads cntacting the vehicle. T make sure yur vehicle is balanced, raise it up until the tyres are 150mm ff the grund and put the hist n the lcks. Stand t the side and put yur ft n the bumper s yu can put yur weight n it and give the vehicle a decent rck t see if it is sitting nice and balanced n the pads. If nt, bring the car dwn and repsitin it. If yu are ging t be remving any heavy cmpnents r are cncerned abut the balance f the vehicle, it is really recmmended t secure the vehicle by either supprting the vehicle with axle stands r by lcking dwn the lifting pint t the pick-up pad. A simple way t d it wuld be t use heavy duty ratchet straps at each pint, hking them underneath the vehicle t pull it dwn nt the pick-up pad. When yu d this, it desn t mean yu can frget abut the balance f the vehicle, as yu add and remve cmpnents frm the vehicle, the centre f gravity is ging t mve arund. Always remember that befre yu ever g under a hist, make sure it s lcked. When yu re dne wrking, befre yu bring the vehicle dwn, make sure the area is cmpletely clear. While yu are lwering the vehicle, yu need t always keep yur eyes n the area under the hist. NOTE: This is especially imprtant in a hme wrkshp as yu may have children r pets running arund. If yu have used straps t secure yur vehicle, lwer the vehicle until the tyres just tuch the grund then remve yur securing straps. Page 5 f 5 18 April 2016
