3 1. Why Boosters? Boosters amplify the digital sigals set from the cotrol uit ad supply a coected track with power. I layouts moitored by RailCom the booster also provides the so-called RailCom-cutout eeded to trasfer RailCom-feedback data. You ca measure the power cosumptio as follows: 1 locomotive gauge N 600 ma 1 locomotive gauge H0 800 ma 1 locomotive gauge ma wago light ma aother cosumer (such as a soud module) ma reserve for poits 10% of the calculated sum of power cosumptio The ca provide 2,5 A curret. If your overall power demad exceeds the capacity of oe booster you have to coect additioal boosters accordig to the special requiremets of your layout. 2. Gettig started How to use this maual This maual gives step-by-step istructios for safe ad correct coectig of the device, ad operatio. Before you start, we advise you to read the whole maual, particularly the chapter o safety istructios ad the checklist for trouble shootig. You will the kow where to take care ad how to prevet mistakes which take a lot of effort to correct. Keep this maual safely so that you ca solve problems i the future. If Page 3

Iteded use The booster B-3 is desiged to be operated accordig to the istructios i this maual i model buildig, especially i digital model railroad layouts. Ay other use is iappropriate ad ivalidates ay guaratees. The booster B-3 should ot be mouted by childre uder the age of 14. Readig, uderstadig ad followig the istructios i this maual are madatory for the user. Checkig the cotets Please make sure that your package cotais:, oe 5-pi coectig cable, two short-circuit jumpers, a CD (cotaiig the maual ad further iformatio). Required materials I order to coect the booster you eed: Wire. Recommeded diameter: for the coectio to the trasformer ad the rails: > 1,5 mm²; for the coectio to the digital cotrol uit: > 0,25 mm². A trasformer. The recommeded voltage ad the miimum power of the trasformer deped o the desired settigs. Page 4

Please ote: Use a trasformer with a omial voltage ot much higher tha the desired track voltage. The power resultig has to be dissipated as heat by the booster otherwise. Whe this power is too high, the booster overheats ad switches off. Page 5

6 3. Safety istructios! Risk of fire The booster is cooled by a vetilatig fa to prevet overheatig. Thus be careful to allow the air to flow uhidered through the vetilatio slits at the booster s top ad back surface. If the vets are blocked compoets ca overheat ad catch fire. Risk of electric shock Touchig powered, live compoets, impermissibly high humidity ad codesatio build up touchig coductig compoets which are live due to malfuctio, short circuits ad coectig the circuit to aother voltage tha specified, ca cause serious ijury due to electrical shock. Take the followig precautios to prevet this dager: Oly operate idoors i a dry eviromet. Oly coect the trasformer i a authorised maer to the house power supply. Use adequetly thick cable for all wirig. Too thi a cable ca overheat. If the layout is exposed to codesatio, allow at least two hours for dryig out. Wirig should oly be carried out whe the booster is discoected. Oly use low power for this device as described i this maual ad oly use certified trasformers. Page 6

8 Data formats The booster B-3 is a multi protocol booster ad capable of amplifyig data set i the Motorola or the DCC format. It trasmits switchig ad cotrol commads i mfx-format as well, but o mfx feedback sigals. Ports The booster B-3 ca be coected either to a port for a Märkli**compatible booster or to a DCC-coformig booster port. Advice: The port ( Märkli**-compatible or DCC-coform) used for the booster s coectio to the cotrol uit, is of o importace for the data format used to cotrol the decoders. Use the port compatible to your cotrol uit. Please ote: With cotrol uits providig both booster ports (e.g. Tams MasterCotrol) you have to set the short circuit polarity accordig to the booster port i use. RailCom The booster B-3 ca provide the so-called RailCom-cutout eeded to trasfer RailCom-feedback data i RailCom-moitored sectios. Whe usig the B-2 with cotrol uits sedig a DCC sigal but ot compatible to RailCom, providig the RailCom-cutout ca cause malfuctio. Some older DCC vehicle decoders ad curret decoders (especially of US America maufacturers) which are ot desiged for use with Railcom, do ot react to drivig commads properly with the RailCom cutout activated. With soud decoders ot compatible to RailCom iterfereces i the soud playback ca occur. Thus with the B-3 it is possible to switch RailCom o or off. With pure Motorola cotrol uits, malfuctio due to sedig the RailCom-cutout is impossible o priciple. Page 8

9 Balaced track voltage The booster B-3 provides a regulated track voltage, which ca be set to a value of 12, 15 or 19 V. At delivery the track voltage is set to 19 V. Regulatig the track voltage to a costat value prevets chages i locomotive speeds ad lightig brightess, resultig from voltage variatios. Rated size Recommeded track voltage Z 12 V N ud TT 15 V H0 19 V Short-circuit protectio The provides a itergrated short circuit breakig i shape of a itegrated curret limitatio. This causes the booster to switch off automatically whe a short circuit occurs at the track output ad thus prevets damages to the booster, the tracks ad the vehicles. The short circuit sesitivity or the iterruptig curret is set to 2,5 A. Whe the short circuit feedback lie is coected to the booster port of the cotrol uit, the B-3 seds a feedback to the cotrol uit whe a short circuit occurs ad the the cotrol uit switches off the booster. After approx. 5 secods the B-3 switches o automatically. If the short circuit is still there, it switches off agai immediately. After the booster has bee switched o ad off five times, the automatic switchig o will be iterrupted for approx. oe miute before it starts agai. Operatio with DCC cotrol uits The booster amplifies the track sigal completely symmetrically. This allows the ABC-brakig method to be used i DCC-cotrolled layouts. The DCC-iput of the booster B-3 is isolated through a opto-coupler. Page 9

10 5. Splittig your model railway layout Split your model railway layout i several track sectios electrically isolatig them from each other. Every sectio has to be supplied by a booster of its ow. I each sectio a maximum of three to five locomotives should ru at the same time. The followig divisios are useful: statio egie sheds the mai lie (if ecessary i several sectios) the brach lies (if ecessary i several sectios) Make sure that sectio borders are ot crossed too ofte. Isolate the borders betwee the booster sectios as follows: With 2-rail systems: oe rail. Be sure to isolate i all booster sectios o the same rail ("left" or "right"). I large cofusig layouts it is recommeded to isolate both rails. With 3-rail systems: the middle coductor. Page 10

11 6. Coectig the B-3! Please ote: Do ot block the flow of air over the heat sik at the booster s back surface, otherwise the booster ca overheat. Risk of fire! Whe coectig the booster be sure to keep sufficiet distace to other devices, walls, ad the like. Coectig the cetral uit It is possible to coect the booster to the iterface of the cetral uit for a Märkli**-compatible booster (with a 5-pi coectig cable) or the DCC booster iterface of the cetral uit (with a 3-pi coectig cable). The eclosed cable is iteded for coectig the booster to the iterface of a Märkli**-compatible booster. It ca be used for coectig the booster to the cetral uit MasterCotrol. The booster cofiguratio of the MasterCotrol has to be set to "short circuit polarity: positive (MM)" (= factory settig). The booster B-3 has two Märkli**-booster ports ad two DCC-booster ports to be used at choice. Please make sure that the pi assigmet of the cetral uit s booster iterface correspods to that of the booster port.! Please ote: If you have coected a booster via the Märkli**-compatible booster port to your cetral uit you have to coect the additioal booster via the "still disegaged" Märkli**-compatible booster port. The same goes by aalogy for the DCC booster ports. Hit: Oly use boosters of oe type ad made by oe maufacturer to avoid problems such as: Problems with data trasfer to the decoders. Short circuits whe crossig sectios. Curret leakage that make locomotives move by themselves whe other locomotives cross the borders betwee two track sectios. Page 12

13 Coectig the tracks Coect the booster s track port to both rails (with 2-rail systems) or to oe rail ad the middle coductor (with 3-rail systems). These coectios should be repeated every 2-3 meters, because the resistace at the coectio poits of the tracks is quite high. Whe choosig too high itervals, problems with the short circuit idicatio or the power supply of the vehicles may occur.! Please ote: The coectio order of the rails (or the rail ad the middle coductor) to the two poles of the track port is ot sigificat, if you have t already coected a booster to your layout. If you have the please ote: The left pole of the secod booster s track port has to be coected to the same rail (or the the middle coductor) as the left pole of the booster already coected. The same goes of course for the right pole of the boosters track ports. I case the coectios are mixed up short circuits will occur whe vehicles cross the boudries of the track sectios. Coectig the power supply Coect the trasformer to the booster s trasformer port. The required voltage ad the miimum power of the booster deped o the desired track voltage. See sectio "required materials" o page 4.! Please ote: You must ot iterchage the coectios to the tracks ad to the trasformer. Iterchagig these coectios ormally causes damages at the booster, i the worst case beyod repair. Page 13

15 7. Settigs With the B-3, you ca set a track voltage of 12, 15 or 19 V ad switch o or off RailCom. Positio the short circuit jumpers icluded i the package i cocordace with the drawigs to the correspodig pis o the PCB. 16 8. Operatio LED The LED o the frot lights or flashes idicatig the operatio modes or problems that occur. LED Meaig costatly lightig booster i operatio slowly flashig (apprx. 1 sec. cycle) o sigal from the cotrol uit quickly flashig short circuit at the track output Shutig the boudry betwee two booster sectios You should take care ot to allow locomotives or trais to halt directly o the boudary betwee two sectios. This would lead to a coectio betwee the outputs ad possible damagig of the two coected boosters. The short circuit idicatio does ot work uder these circumstaces. 9. Check list for troubleshootig The booster is gettig too hot ad/or starts to smoke.! Discoect the system from the mais immediately! Possible reaso: The coectios to the track ad the power supply have bee mixed up. à Alter the coectios. Possibly the booster has bee damaged. The LED at the booster does ot light ad the locomotives caot be drive. Possible reaso: The power supply has bee iterrupted. à Check the coectios to the power supply (trasformer). Page 16

17 The LED flashes slowly. Possible reaso: The cotrol uit has bee switched off or the coectio to the cotrol uit has bee iterrupted. à Check the cotrol uit ad the coectios. The LED flashes quickly. Possible reaso: There is a short circuit at the track output. Therefore the booster switches off automatically ad after approx. 5 secods automatically o agai. I case the short circuit is still there after autostartig, the booster switches off immediately. This procedure is repeated five times, followed by a oe miute break. à Elimiate the short circuit. Hotlie If problems with your device occur, our hotlie is pleased to help you (mail address o the last page). Repairs You ca sed i a defective device for repair (address o the last page). I case of guaratee the repair is free of charge for you. With damages ot covered by guaratee, the maximum fee for the repair is 50 % of the sales price accordig to our valid price list. We reserve the right to reject the repairig of a device whe the repair is impossible for techical or ecoomic reasos. Please do ot sed i devices for repair charged to us. I case of warraty we will reimburse the forwardig expeses up to the flat rate we charge accordig to our valid price list for the delivery of the product. With repairs ot covered by guaratee you have to bear the expeses for sedig back ad forth. Page 17

18 10. Guaratee bod For this product we issue volutarily a guaratee of 2 years from the date of purchase by the first customer, but i maximum 3 years after the ed of series productio. The first customer is the cosumer first purchasig the product from us, a dealer or aother atural or juristic perso resellig or moutig the product o the basis of selfemploymet. The guaratee exists supplemetary to the legal warraty of merchatability due to the cosumer by the seller. The warraty icludes the free correctio of faults which ca be proved to be due to material failure or factory flaw. With kits we guaratee the completeess ad quality of the compoets as well as the fuctio of the parts accordig to the parameters i ot mouted state. We guaratee the adherece to the techical specificatios whe the kit has bee assembled ad the ready-built circuit coected accordig to the maual ad whe start ad mode of operatio follow the istructios. We retai the right to repair, make improvemets, to deliver spares or to retur the purchase price. Other claims are excluded. Claims for secodary damages or product liability cosist oly accordig to legal requiremets. Coditio for this guaratee to be valid, is the adherece to the maual. I additio, the guaratee claim is excluded i the followig cases: if arbitrary chages i the circuit are made, if repair attempts have failed with a ready-built module or device, if damaged by other persos, if damaged by faulty operatio or by careless use or abuse.
