7 Biogas facility in Mäkikylä, Kouvola Digester and upgrading unit is owned and operated by local energy company KSS Energia and uppgraded biogas is injected to the natural gas grid by Gasum The facility started to inject biogas to the grid on October 2011 Digester: Two-stage thermophilic wet fermentation process Upgrading: Greenlane water scrubber Total capacity: 15 GWh/a Feedstock: Municipal biowaste, sewage sludge and grass silage from the Kymeenlaakso and neighboring areas Mäkikylä is the first biogas facility in Finland to inject upgraded biogas to the gas grid. With a similar concept, biogas production facilities could be constructed to operate with wastewater treatment plants in other cities as well Gasum Pasi Torri 7
8 Biogas facility in Suomenoja, Espoo Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) have produced biogas in wastewater treatment plant in Espoo since In 2012 Gasum invested in uppgrading and injection facilities and started to feed biogas into the gas network. The upgrading facility produces 23 GWh of biogas every year. The Suomenoja wastewater treatment plant processes wastewater originating from the municipalities of Espoo, Kauniainen, Kirkkonummi and Vantaa, all located in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Gasum provides the equipment needed at the plant to upgrade biogas into a consistent quality biomethane and feed it into the gas network. The joint project enables Helsinki Regional Transport Authority to use locally produced biogas as a public transport fuel. Biogas produced at the Suomenoja plant would cover the annual fuel consumption of almost 50 buses Gasum Pasi Torri 8
9 Lahti Biogas Facility Kujalan Komposti and Gasum are building a significant biogas production plant in the Lahti area. This plant will be the biggest biogas production and upgrading facility in Finland when fully operational. Gasum will inject the resulting biomethane to the national gas grid. The project received a significant investment subsidy from the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. The plant will start its operations in November Approximately 50 GWh/a of biogas will be upgraded and injected to the natural gas grid. 11 A biorefinery for biogas production in Joutseno Gasum, energy company Helsingin Energia and forest industry company Metsä-Fibre are planning to construct a biorefinery for biogas production in Joutseno The biorefinery would produce biogas from renewable wood raw material, such as forest chips and bark, for transmission along the Gasum gas network to usage sites such as power plants in Helsinki region Biogas (Bio-SNG) is produced using methods incl. wood gasification The production capacity of the planned refinery would be 200 MW, generating annually GWh of biogas Currently, the companies are carrying out feasibility studies and are aiming to start production in 2020 at the earliest Joutseno is an excellent location for wood-based biogas production plant + Locacated close to vast forest resouces + The raw material procurement chain is already in pla + Access to gas grid Gasum Pasi Torri 11
12 Energy crop biogas facility in Kouvola Gasum and the energy company KSS Energia are planning to build a large-scale biogas facility in the Kouvola region. The facility would use locally produced field crop, mainly fodder and grazing plants, as a feedstock for generating biogas ( t/a). The facility is planned with an annual biogas production of 100 GWh. This amount of energy would be enough to operate at least 250 buses in urban traffic or fuel 4,000 passenger cars for a year. In June 2010, the companies signed a letter of intent concerning the joint project. Currently the project is pending commencement of the environmental impact assessment. Biogas production can be started in 2017 at the earliest. The Kouvola region is an ideal place to site a facility producing biogas from energy crops + Access to the natural gas transmission system + Agriculture of the region is focused on cereal growing. In rotation farming, fodder and grazing plants revitalise the soil and so improve grain harvests. + Gasum and KSS Energy have had succesfull cooperation with a smaller scale biogas facility in Mäkikylä, Kouvola. 13 Natural energy gases Natural gas Biogas Natural gas from Siberia is 98% methane (CH 4 ). Natural gas is colorless, non-toxic and lighter than air. When combusted, natural gas produces thermal energy, carbon dioxide and water vapor. Natural gas combustion does not create any harmful particulate matter emissions, soot or heavy metal or sulfur emissions. Raw biogas contains 45 75% methane (CH4) and 25 50% carbon dioxide (CO2). 15 System Operator s Terms and Conditions Governing System Responsibility August The quality requirements set for natural gas injected into the transmission system regarding the Wobbe index, carbon dioxide and relative density are based on Common Business Practice /01, Harmonisation of Natural Gas Quality, published by EASEE-gas. The quality requirements are as follows: minimum maximum Wobbe index kwh/nm3 Relative density Component composition: oxygen traces carbon dioxide maximum 2.5 mol% Sulfur content: hydrogen sulfide maximum 15 mg/nm3 mercaptan sulfur maximum 25 mg/nm3 total sulfur maximum 100 mg/nm3 Water dew point at 40 bar: winter maximum 5 oc summer maximum +0 oc Hydrocarbon dew point at 40 bar: maximum 9 oc The approved injection pressure and temperature as well as the need for odorization must be specified in cooperation with the network operator into whose network the injection takes place. The purity of natural gas injected into the natural gas transmission system must meet the following filtration rates: solid particles sized 1 3 μm: filtration rate 99% solid particles larger than 3 μm: filtration rate 100% liquid particles sized μm: filtration rate 99.5% liquid particles larger than 8 μm: filtration rate 100% Gasum Pasi Torri 15
16 3.3. continue System Operator s Terms and Conditions Governing System Responsibility August 2014 The quality of biomethane injected into the natural gas transmission system must meet the quality requirements set for natural gas where no separate requirements have been determined for biomethane. In addition, biomethane must meet the other quality requirements set for biomethane. Quality requirements for biomethane injected into the natural gas transmission system: Methane content minimum 95 mol% Oxygen maximum 0.5 mol% Siloxanes maximum 2 mg Si/Nm3 If a biomethane production facility planned for connection to the natural gas transmission system is based on a technology other than an anaerobic digestion process, this must be agreed upon with the System Operator to verify the network injectability of the biomethane to be injected and agree upon the limit values and analyses for the gas. The System Operator reserves the right to use the standard for biomethane for injection in natural gas pipelines developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in the quality requirements set for biomethane injected into the transmission system following the completion of the standard. 21 Clean liquefied natural gas (LNG) LNG is produced by cooling natural gas down to -162 C. In the liquid state the volume is reduced to 1/600 of the gaseous volume. LNG has the same properties as the other energy gases, it mainly contains methane (CH4). LNG is an odorless, tasteless, non-toxic and non-corrosive gas. The energy content of 310 l of LNG corresponds to that of 1 barrel (159 l) of oil. LNG can be delivered outside the gas network. LNG is environmentally friendly and safe and broadens the usage opportunities of natural energy gases and challenges the current pricing models Gasum Pasi Torri 21
