2 Helsingin Energia s smart CHP/DH system Helsingin Energia s district heating system covers more than 90% of the heating need of the buildings in Helsinki. The connection capacity of the network is 3,244 MW and there are 14,010 customer connections (2010). Helsingin Energia has extensively operated its energy-efficient smart CHP/DH system in Helsinki since The operations have been improved in terms of their climate impact and efficiency throughout the years. Net turnover 716 million euro 2

3 CHP and DHC in Helsinki The decisions of CHP and DH were made in 1953 by City Council Basic reasons for the DH were; Economical Ecological Supply reliability Energy political CHP have been the basic production solution from the beginning District Cooling supply started in 1998 From the beginning DHC have been economically success Reliable DHC The distribution reliability of DHC is very high and the cut-offs are rare The networks is designed so that DHC can be distributed via several routes DHC production is typically based on multiple heating and cooling plants DHC is available throughout the year Flexible use of fuels and different production sites 3

4 Outsourced energy solutions Customers are willing to outsource heating and cooling production to energy company (compare to electricity or any other activity) Harms and risks of own production are avoided DHC are reliable and cost efficient solutions for whole life-cycle DHC customers can concentrate on their key businesses 4

7 Combined Heat and Power Helsingin Energia generates electricity and heat in the same process. The combined generation achieves high efficiency, in other words more energy is gained from the same amount of fuel. Combined generation reduces carbon dioxide emissions. District heating has improved the air quality in Helsinki. 7

13 The Katri Vala heating and cooling plant The Katri Vala heating and cooling plant was commissioned at the end of the year It is an environmentally benign solution developed by Helsingin Energia. The plant's "fuels" in production of district heating and district cooling are sea water, the heat of the purified sewage water and the energy of returning heating water. The plant is the largest in the world to use heat pumps to produce district heating and district cooling form both purified sewage water and sea water. Its output is 90 MW of district heating and 60 MW of district cooling. This is enough to heat a small town. The plant is located in a space excavated underneath the Katri Vala park in the district of Sörnäinen. 13
