7 Secion 1 Pump and Sand Filer Sysem Overview 1 This sysem operaes under pressure and if assembled improperly or operaed wih air in he waer circulaion sysem i can separae and resul in an acciden causing serious bodily injury A warning label has been affixed o he filer and should no be removed Keep safey labels in good condiion and replace if missing or illegible (For free labels call, (919) ) Pumps and filers should never be esed or subjeced o air or gas under pressure All gases are compressible and under pressure creae a danger Serious bodily injury or propery damage could occur if he pump or filer is subjeced o air or gas pressure The sysem consiss primarily of a cenrifugal pump, a high rae sand filer wih conrol valve, a connecing hose and a mouning base Your cenrifugal pump is driven by an elecric moor The moor is direcly aached o he pump impeller As he elecric moor urns i causes he impeller o urn and his causes he waer o flow The waer flows ino he hair and lin po inle and hrough he baske assembly o presrain large paricles The flow hen eners he cener of he pump housing The flow goes hrough he impeller ino he saionary diffuser, ou he pump discharge por, hrough he connecing hose and ino he filer conrol valve Dir is colleced in he filer as he waer flows hrough he conrol valve a he op of he filer and is direced downward ono he op surface of he filer sand bed The dir is colleced in he sand bed and he clean waer flows hrough he lower piping a he boom of he filer up hrough he cener pipe ino he conrol valve a he op of he filer Clean waer hen reurns hrough he piping sysem o he pool The pressure will rise and he flow o he pool will be lowered as he dir is colleced in he filer Evenually, he filer will become so plugged wih dir ha i will be necessary o perform he backwash procedure I is imporan o know when o backwash he filer For backwashing informaion, see page 12 and 13 The six (6) operaing posiion and one (1) Winerize posiion valve is designed o provide all he necessary posiions required o operae, mainain, roubleshoo and service your sand filer Air enering he filer and a valve clamp no closed properly can cause he valve o separae and could cause serious bodily injury and/or propery damage To preven equipmen damage and possible injury, always urn pump off before changing valve posiion Pump and Sand Filer Sysem Insallaion and User s Guide

8 2 This filer operaes under high pressure When any par of he circulaing sysem (eg, clamp, pump, filer, valves, ec) is serviced, air can ener he sysem and become pressurized Pressurized air can cause he lid or conrol valve o separae which may resul in serious injury, deah, or propery damage To avoid his poenial hazard, follow hese insrucions 1 Before reposiioning valves and before beginning he assembly, disassembly, or adjusmen of he clamp or any oher service of he circulaing sysem: (a) Turn he pump off and shu off any auomaic conrols o ensure he sysem is no inadverenly sared during he servicing; (b) Open manual air relief valve; (c) Wai unil all pressure is relieved, pressure gauge mus read zero (0) 2 Whenever insalling he filer clamp, follow he filer valve and clamp insallaion insrucions exacly 3 Once service on he circulaing sysem is complee, follow sysem resar insrucions exacly 4 Mainain circulaion sysem properly Replace worn or damaged pars immediaely (eg, clamp, pressure gauge, relief valve, o-rings, ec) 5 Be sure ha he filer is properly mouned and posiioned according o insrucions provided Valve Posiion and Waer Flow Direcions FILTER: From pump, hrough valve, downward hrough filer sand bed, up hrough cener pipe o valve reurn por, and back o he pool for normal filer acion and vacuuming pool hrough filer BACKWASH: From pump, hrough valve, down hrough cener pipe, up hrough filer sand o valve, and ou wasepor This posiion is used for cleaning filer by reversing flow RINSE: From pump, hrough valve, downward hrough filer sand, up hrough cener pipe o valve and ou wase por This posiion is used for sar up cleaning and reseling filer bed afer backwashing WASTE: From pump, hrough valve, bypasses filer and goes o wasepor This posiion is for vacuuming direcly o wase, lowering pool level, or draining pool CLOSED: NO FLOW IN THIS POSITION - DO NOT USE THIS SETTING WITH PUMP OPERATING RECIRCULATING: From pump, hrough valve, bypass filer and goes o reurn por and back o pool This posiion is for circulaing waer wihou going hrough filer Pump and Sand Filer Sysem Insallaion and User s Guide

9 WINTERIZING: Valve posiion for a winerized sand filer, see page 16 3 Please noe ha a sand filer removes suspended maer and does no saniize he pool The pool waer mus be saniized and he waer mus be balanced for sparkling clear waer Pool chemisry is a specialized area and you should consul your local pool service specialis for specific deails In general proper pool saniaion requires a free chlorine level of 1 o 2 PPM and a ph range of 72 o 76 Your filraion sysem should be designed o mee your local healh codes As a minimum, you mus be sure ha your sysem will urnover he oal volume of waer in your pool a leas wice in a weny-four (24) hour period Failure o operae your filer sysem or inadequae filraion can cause poor waer clariy obsrucing visibiliy in your pool and can allow diving ino or on op of obscured objecs, which can cause serious personal injury or drowning Secion 2 Insallaion 1 Read and undersand all insrucions before aemping o insall, operae, or mainain your pump and sand filer sysem 2 Provide space and lighing for rouine mainenance access Locae he sysem close o he pool See Figure 1 for ypical insallaion Noe: Insall elecrical conrols (eg, on/off swiches, imers, conrol sysems, ec) a leas five (5) fee from he filer This will allow you enough room o sand clear of he filer during sysem sar up Sysems ha are unassembled should be assembled a his poin See special insrucions A hrough G A Make sure all elecrical breakers and swiches o he pump are swiched off, and disconnec he communicaion cable from he pump before insalling he base B Remove all individual componens from caron and inspec for any visible damage If caron or pars are damaged conac seller or freigh company C Place he sysem suppor base on he ground close o he final locaion of he uni See Figure 1 on he nex page Pump and Sand Filer Sysem Insallaion and User s Guide

12 6 3 Now, move he sysem o is final posiion The sysem mus be placed on level solid earh The enire sysem filled wih sand and waer can weigh several hundred pounds Release lach Claw fasener Figure 4 Pump foo 4 Be cerain o insall he precise amoun of filer sand lised on your filer nameplae You mus use only No 20 sandard silica sand having a uniformiy coefficien of 175 or less No 20 silica sand has a paricle size of inches (45 o 55mm) Before pouring he sand ino he filer, look inside and check he lower under drain for broken or loose laerals (or fingers), which may have been accidenally damaged by rough handling during shipmen Replace any pars as necessary 5 Insall he sand guide in he op of he filer and fill he ank abou half full of waer Pour he sand ino he op of he filer a a slow rae so ha he weigh of he sand does no damage he laerals Afer he required amoun of sand has been insalled, remove and discard he sand guide Wash away all sand around he opening a he op of he ank Figure 5 Pump and Sand Filer Sysem Insallaion and User s Guide

20 14 Chemical Cleaning 1 I is recommended ha one of he following cleaners be used: FILTER-CLEANSE - Advanis Technologies, Inc KLEEN IT - BioLab, Inc These cleaners will remove oils, scale and rus from he sand bed in one cleaning operaion 2 Mix a soluion following he manufacurer's insrucions on he label 3 Backwash he filer wih he valve as described above 4 If he filer is below pool level, swich pump off and close he appropriae valves o preven draining he pool 5 Swich off pump, open filer drain and allow filer o empy Place valve in Backwash posiion 6 Afer filer has drained, close filer drain and remove he pump srainer po lid 7 Be sure he backwash lines are open 8 Swich he pump on and slowly pour he cleaning soluion ino he pump srainer wih he pump running If filer is below pool, open shu off valve slighly o allow pump o run 9 Coninue adding soluion unil he sand bed is sauraed wih cleaning soluion 10 Swich off he pump and leave filer in Backwash posiion Allow he filer o sand overnigh (12 hours) 11 Replace he pump lid and follow backwash procedure as described above 12 Do no allow he cleaning soluion o ge ino he pool Pump and Sand Filer Sysem Insallaion and User s Guide

21 Replacemen of Valve Top and Diverer Assembly If he filer conrol valve sops funcioning properly, he problem can usually be correced by replacing he op and diverer assembly as described below 1 Swich off pump and open air bleeder o relieve all inernal pressure 2 Se valve handle o Winerize posiion 3 Remove he six (6) cover screws, washers and nus 4 Lif off valve op and diverer assembly Noe: Valve diverer assembly has he sealing gaske aached o he diverer When handling he diverer use cauion o preven he sealing surface from being damaged during handling 5 Clean valve body sealing surface wih a sof clean lin free cloh Inspec surface for damage such as scraches or nicks If surface is damaged, he valve body mus be replaced 6 Carefully lubricae he new valve op replacemen O-Ring wih a silicone based lubrican or soapy waer DO NOT use vaseline or a peroleum based lubrican Improper ank valve assembly could cause he valve o separae and cause serious injury or propery damage 7 Place he new valve op handle in he Winerize posiion Insall he new valve op and diverer assembly Be sure he small recess on he lid and he small bump on valve body are aligned Insall all six (6) screws wih backup washer under he screw head Insall he nus on each screw and finger ighen all six (6) screws The screws should be ighened progressively by ighening diamerically opposie screws and following a crisscross paern Tighen all six (6) valve op aachmen screws snug DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN 15 Pump and Sand Filer Sysem Insallaion and User s Guide

22 16 Winerizing he Sysem 1 Allowing waer o freeze in he sysem will damage he sysem and cause poenial waer damage/flooding and poenial propery damage In areas ha have freezing winer emperaures, proec he pool equipmen by backwashing he filer 2 Afer backwashing, shu he pump off, open he manual air bleeder on he valve and move he handle o Winerize posiion 3 Remove he drain cap on he boom of he filer The filer will drain very slowly During he shudown season, i is recommended o leave he drain plug ou The conrol valve should be lef in he Winerize posiion during he shudown season so ha he rubber seal of he valve diverer has no pressure on i Failure o do so can damage he valve diverer seal which can cause propery damage from leaking waer 4 Drain all waer from he pump housing and piping when freezing emperaures are expeced Remove boh drain plugs from he pump o allow he pump o drain compleely 5 If possible, remove he pump and place i in an inside dry locaion 6 For an oudoor unproeced locaion i is bes o proec he equipmen in a weaher proof enclosure 7 I is recommended o cover he equipmen wih a arpaulin or plasic shee o preven deerioraion from he environmen DO NOT WRAP THE PUMP MOTOR WITH PLASTIC, his will cause condensaion o form inside he moor 8 In insallaions where he pump canno be drained a 40% Propylene Glycol 60% waer soluion will proec o -50 F (-455 C) Noe: Do no use ani-freeze soluions excep Propylene Glycol; as oher ani-freeze are highly oxic and will damage he pump Pump and Sand Filer Sysem Insallaion and User s Guide
