Included in his package you will find he following iems: 2 x Survey devices: SUR & SUR x 120 Vac charger for he ools efore performing a survey, please insure ha boh survey ools are fully charged overnigh. The survey ool will display a numerical percenage value on he LCD screen which represens he wireless nework Zigee RSSI di value (Receiving Signal Srengh Indicaor). Please noe ha i is normal for he value o flucuae slighly (up o 10-). The final reading value is represenaive of he median averaged values displayed. ny value from 10 o 100% indicaes good Zigee conneciviy. ny value below 10% may indicae ha an exra Rouer VRP5000W1000W may need o be insalled. Zigee Mesh Nework Overview Zigee is a specificaion for a suie of high level communicaion proocols using small, low-power digial radios based on he IEEE sandard for wireless personal area neworks (WPNs). Mesh neworking is a ype of nework where each node in acs as an independen rouer. I allows for coninuous connecions and reconfiguraion around broken or blocked pahs by hopping and re-meshing from node o node unil he final desinaion is reached. General characerisics of he wireless physical communicaion layer are: SUR & SUR Uses a wireless physical layer of 2.4GHz wih a daa raes of 250 kbps Yields high hroughpu and low laency uomaic opology configuraion: sar, peer-o-peer, mesh Handshake proocol for ransfer reliabiliy Range: 50 fee / 15M ypical (up o 100 fee / 30 M based on environmen) 2
IEEE along wih Zigee Neworks and pplicaion Suppor Layer provide: Low cos insallaion deploymen Ease of implemenaion Reliable daa ransfer Shor range operaion Very low power consumpion For a successful Zigee deploymen, i is imporan o undersand ha he Zigee wireless nework is influenced by he same environmenal facors ha affec oher wireless sysems: Inerference from radio emiers Various elecronic devices Inerference caused by solid objecs ha may slow or sop communicaion beween devices Even wih poenial sources of signal inerference, he presence of hese facors should no resul in noiceable nework performance degradaion. Environmenal issues will occur wih any wireless nework insallaion. asic Iniial Design nd Deploymen Consideraions Proper design consideraions need o be addressed prior o any insallaion of a JCE wih a Viconics wireless communicaion card and relaed wireless conrollers. Viconics recommends using a per floor horizonal archiecure vs. a verical one. Transmiing from one floor o he oher may be possible in cerain applicaions (such as going hrough sair ways), bu he design and opimizaion of he conroller anenna is designed for opimal horizonal disance peneraion and no a verical one. s such, be prepared o use T LEST ONE coordinaor (VWG / Jace-Driver) per floor. Please noe ha radio ransmissions CNNOT ravel hrough seel. If floors are consruced wih seel joiss or oher seel maerials i is highly unlikely ha he wireless conroller ransmissions will be successful beween floors. Clear line of sigh deploymen recommends he use of channels 15, 25 and 26 ONLY Wi-Fi ransmissions overlap and may inerfere wih oher channel selecions allowed by (Channels 11 o 24 ). Wih Clear line of sigh deploymen, (no physical obsacles beween 2 communicaing conrollers) he maximum disance beween each conroller is a maximum of 100 fee or 30 Meers (fig. 1). Non-clear line of sigh deploymen The maximum non-clear line of sigh disance beween conrollers for gypsum wall pariions which may include meal sud framing is a maximum of 50 fee or 15 meers (fig. 2). Fig. 1 Fig. 2 eyond Comfor eyond Comfor Line of sigh disance beween 2 nodes is a maximum of 100 fee (30 M) G Maximum 50 fee (15 M) beween 2 conroller nodes G To avoid nework inerference wih Wi- Fi devices in he 2.4GHz specrum, Viconics 3
In order o avoid inerference from oher wireless devices such as (wireless rouers, wireless adapers or lapop using wireless neworks, ec.) insure ha a minimum disance of 3 fee or 1 meer is mainained beween any Viconics node and any Wi-Fi devices. Mainain a disance of 10 fee or 3 meers or more would be preferable when possible (fig. 3). VWG in a meal box. If he VWG needs o be insalled inside a meal cabine, use he remoe anenna accessory. The recommended maximum number of wireless conrollers per JCE is 30; a minimum of 3 conrollers should be wihin 50 fee or 15 Meers of he VWG (fig. 4-5). 5 Sie Survey Overview If available, i is bes o have a floor plan layou showing he locaion of all he proposed conrollers o be insalled. If possible, perform he survey during occupied hours where oher elecronic devices such as (compuers, wireless lapop, cell phones, PD s, wireless elephones, microwave ovens, ligh ballass, ec.) would be in use as o generae as much inerference as possible. Some of hese devices can generae inerference up o 20 fee or 6.8 meers away during normal operaion. Even wih possible sources of signal inerference, he presence of hese wireless devices will mos probably no resul in any nework performance degradaion. I is imporan o undersand ha he survey values given by he survey ool are provided as a wors case scenario of a poin o poin applicaion. Once he whole is deployed wih a Jace and VWG coordinaor and all wireless conrollers are presen and funcioning as rouers, he abiliy of he nework o efficienly roue wireless signals canno be compared o his simple survey analysis mehod. Thus, i is imporan o remember ha he displayed percen signal ONLY represens he signal srengh from poin o poin. s oher devices join he nework mesh, he roue aken from device o device will mos likely change. is designed for opimal horizonal disance peneraion. Holding he survey ool or he conroller horizonally will dramaically lower he range of conneciviy. Hold he survey ool a he locaion where you would like o insall he conroller. The closer he survey ool is o he acual insallaion locaion of he conroller, he more accurae he survey resuls will be. Do NOT sand direcly in beween 2 survey ools while measuring. Your body will inerfere wih ransmission signals. lways sand ou of line of sigh o avoid inerfering wih he signal readings. To insure accurae readings, LWYS hold he ools by he boom using he baery holder (fig. 6). Do no hold i by he conroller case, as you may cover he anenna (fig. 7). Fig. 6 Fig. 7 dense cluser of wireless conrollers will allow your nework o recover from emporary disurbances more swifly. To ensure a proper survey, Viconics recommends using ONLY channels 15 or 25 o avoid nework inerference wih Wi-Fi devices in he 2.4GHz specrum range. egin by seing OTH devices o he SME channel & PN ID. efore saring a sie survey: Press he on buon on boh devices while holding hem side by side. 100% signal srengh indicaes ha he survey ools are funcioning properly. Survey Consideraions: lways hold he survey device verically o insure proper measuremens. The conrollers anenna Imporan Noes bou The Survey Tools: The survey ools feaure an auo-shudown afer 10 minues. fer 10 minues, 10 quick audio beeps will be heard; if he ON buon is no re-pressed, he uni afer he coun of 10 beeps, he uni will self shudown o preven unnecessary baery drainage. The minimal expeced baery life is a leas 50 full charge cycles. The maximum expeced baery life is 200 full charge cycles. Conac Viconics for replacemen baeries. The survey ools use a cusom rechargeable baery ype. DO NOT USE regular rechargeable baeries for replacemen; he charging circui is NOT DESIGNED for ha. Doing so MY resul in criical failure and / or injury. 5
Performing a sie survey: Le s ake his ypical floor layou wih he proposed conroller & coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) (fig. 8). Fig. 8 c Wireless Thermosa c Proposed Wireless Coordinaor VWG /Jace-Driver 1) Find he poenial coverage radius of he coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) a i s proposed locaion. I s possible ha anoher locaion may improve your nework performance or ha you may require an addiional coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) or addiional REP5000W wireless repeaers. 2) Se one of he survey ools a he proposed coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) and noe down he link qualiy of he signal srengh for each proposed conroller locaion unil you are ou of range. 3) I is recommended ha you es LL conrollers o properly insure coverage. 4) ll conrollers wihin range of he coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) can be expeced o join he nework direcly hrough he coordinaor (VWG or Jace- Driver) wihou any hops or roues (fig. 9). 8 Knowing and undersanding he 6 / 5H rule of Zigee Zigee is a sandard which is suiable for wireless sensor and conroller neworks. In Zigee, a device / node / conroller is said o join a nework if i can obain a Zigee nework address from a paren device. This Zigee address is a value which is NOT iniially exposed or available for he inegraor o see. Devices / nodes / conrollers can calculae and assign addresses for heir surrounding devices by a disribued address assignmen scheme. This assignmen is flexible, bu i does somewha resrics he number of aached devices and he possible deph of he said nework for any given device on he nework. Zigee suppors hree kinds of neworks ype: sar, ree, and mesh neworks. The Zigee coordinaor ( In our case, his is he Jace wih he wireless communicaion card ) is responsible for iniializing, mainaining, and conrolling he nework. sar nework has a coordinaor wih devices direcly connecing o he coordinaor. ree and mesh neworks, devices can communicae wih each oher in a muli-hop fashion. The nework is formed by one Zigee coordinaor and muliple Zigee rouers. device can join a nework as an end device by he associaing wih he coordinaor or a rouer. Zigee device / node / conroller is said o have successfully joined a nework if i can obain a Zigee nework address from he main Jace coordinaor or any oher rouer devices / nodes / conroller. 6 sands for 6 addresses maximum per device / node / conroller ny given device / node / conroller including he Jace coordinaor can ONLY give a maximum 6 Zigee addresses ou o oher devices so hey join he acive Zigee nework. This means for any device / node / conroller o be able o successfully join a Zigee nework, i needs an address o be assigned by anoher device / node / conroller which is wihin conneciviy and ha has NOT already assigned is maximum of 6 addresses allowed. Please noe ha once a device / node / conroller has been assigned a Zigee address & has joined he acive Zigee nework, i will save is assigned Zigee address o flash memory & re-use i aferwards even afer a power failure or a nework re-sar. The ONLY ime device / node / conroller would require a NEW Zigee address is if he nework is re-sared wih eiher a new PN ID or a new Channel value. This causes he currenly assigned & saved Zigee address in flash o be erased & will force he / node / conroller o ry o re-join a new nework. Orphan Nodes I is imporan o undersand ha if a nework is sared up incorrecly i may resul in orphaned or unassigned devices / nodes / conrollers ha will NOT join he Zigee nework. Le s firs undersand how an orphan node is creaed. ypical example is when jobs are sared on a echnician desk before sending he devices / nodes / conrollers o he field for insallaion. Ofen he inegraion echnician will begin by powering up he Jace coordinaor and connec i o he Workbench ool creaing and adding he Wireless Tsa Nework driver layer. Once he Wireless Tsa Nework driver layer is up and running, he echnician will hen open and sar up he wireless devices / nodes / conrollers one by one and add hem o heir Niagara daabase. They will power he firs uni, hen add i o he daabase and finally power i down. They will power up he second uni, add i o he daabase and hen power i down. This will be repeaed o a maximum of 6 devices. This will work fine for he firs 6 devices only, simply because he Jace coordinaor can provide a maximum of 6 assignable addresses. When he echnician powers up he 7h device / node / conroller, i will NOT be able o join he Zigee nework unless one of he previous device / node / conroller is powered back on. Once his is done, i will be able o assign he nex 6 addresses as usual. In order o add anoher 6 devices, one of he previously added device needs o be lef on. If 42 devices are o be added o he nework, 8 of hem should LWYS be powered and be wihin conneciviy range of all he ohers. How would orphan nodes appear in he field and how would you allow hem o join he Zigee nework? 8
Please noe ha his ONLY applies o he iniial nework sar-up. Once all he devices are online o he Niagara daabase, everyhing will operae seamlessly even on power up / down & nework re-sars. How Orphan nodes are creaed in he field. Ex.: 2 small buildings are wihin a few fee of each oher. oh have 6+ devices / nodes / conroller each (fig.12). uilding Jace e Wihin Range possible cause for uilding orphan nodes is as follow: uilding is firs saed and ses he Jace coordinaor configuraion parameers for he PN ID and Channel. Premises: uilding is firs saed. Yellow device / node / conroller has given ou is 6 addresses ou o oher devices in building. uilding devices / nodes / conrollers can only be conneced hrough blue device / nodes / conroller due o maximum disance coverage. Resul: ecause lue conroller canno have an address assigned by Yellow conroller o join he nework. The all Orange devices / nodes / conrollers canno join he Zigee nework eiher. Geing orphan devices back on he nework: Disconnec and bring one of he building device / node / conrollers and power i up in building unil i joins he Zigee nework ( confirmed eiher a he Jace coordinaor or using he saus LED on he wireless communicaion card of he device / node / conroller). When he device / node / conroller has joined he nework in building and is added o he Niagara daabase, bring i back ino building so i can propagae Zigee addresses o he oher devices in building. Fig. 12 uilding Fig. 13 5H sands for 5 hops maximum NY given device / node / conroller should be opimized o be NO FURTHER han 5 Hops o and from he Jace / Coordinaor. This is due o he naure of he Viconics Zigee sack in he wireless conrollers. To properly layou he archiecure and deermine he number of Jace s required on he job sie, begin by esablishing he maximum possible coverage of a single Jace wih a wireless communicaion card respecing he 5 hop maximum rule. This can also done wih he survey ools and is covered in deail in he manual for he survey procedures and ool usage: MN VWG-SURVEY-Exx. 1. egin by posiioning he Jace-coordinaor cenrally in he floor space you are working in. 2. Find he coverage radius of he coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) a is proposed locaion. I s possible ha anoher locaion may improve your nework performance or ha you may require an addiional coordinaor ( VWG or Jace-Driver ) or addiional REP5000W wireless repeaers. 3. Se survey ool a he proposed coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) 4. Wih survey ool, walk abou he floor where a cluser of conrollers are o be found. Locae he boundary where he signal srengh is abou. This represens he maximum radius of he firs hop where conneciviy is possible based on he building environmen and pariion consrucion. Please noe ha his disance can be anywhere from NIL o hundreds of fee (fig. 13). Proposed locaion Jace Coordinaor Cluser of: devices / nodes / conrollers Cluser of: devices / nodes / conrollers 9
5. Leave survey ool a his locaion and move survey ool owards he oher clusers of conrollers. Locae he boundary where he signal srengh is abou. This represens he maximum radius of he second hop where conneciviy is possible based on he building environmen and pariion consrucion. 6. Repea he process unil you esablish he maximum range covered by 5 hops where he las posiion recorded represens he safes furhes posiion ha can be covered by a single Jace coordinaor (fig. 14). 7. If more han 5 devices / nodes / conrollers are presen in he same area where readings were aken, IT IS RECOMMENDED ha anoher Jace coordinaor be used (fig. 15). es pracice Zigee iniial nework sar-up procedure In order o avoid creaing orphan devices / nodes / conrollers and moving abou devices / nodes / conrollers during he iniial nework sar-up, i is recommended ha he same power up sequence iniially used for he survey be used. Please noe ha once a device / node / conroller has been assigned a Zigee address and has joined he acive Zigee nework, i will save i s assigned Zigee address o flash memory and re-use i aferwards even afer a power failure or a nework re-sar. The ONLY ime device / node / conroller would require a NEW Zigee address is if he nework is re-sared wih eiher a new PN ID or a new Channel value. This causes he currenly assigned and saved Zigee address in flash o be erased and will force he / node / conroller o ry o re-join a Fig. 14 Proposed locaion Jace Coordinaor Maximum linear disance covered by a single Jace-Coordinaor Fig. 15 Channel 25 Pan ID=10 Proposed locaion Jace Coordinaor Channel 25 Pan ID=20 Proposed locaion Jace Coordinaor 10
new nework. I.E. his is ONLY applicable during he iniial nework sar-up. 1. Firs power up he orange devices / nodes / conrollers in sequence as showed and wai unil hey are joined o he nework or mached o heir offline creaed counerpars ( see he device managemen secion in his manual on how o creae offline devices / nodes / conrollers & mach hem o discovered devices ). 2. ll he remaining yellow devices / nodes / conrollers can now all be powered up o also join he nework. 3. This sar-up sequencing allows for LL devices o be discovered wihou creaing orphan nodes (fig. 16). Fig. 16 Proposed locaion Jace Coordinaor Power #1 Power #2 Power #3 Poins o Remember: lways wrie your ransmission resuls on a plan when possible. Use REP5000W repeaers if remoe devices are oo far o bridge or he signal is oo weak. You can move he coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) o a new locaion if i helps creae beer clusers of conrollers. You should always plan for a floor by floor horizonal archiecure vs. a verical one. ddiional coordinaor (VWG or Jace-Driver) can be used when clusers become oo far apar in an insallaion. You can always call Viconics echnical suppor for recommendaions if you have a floor plan layou available for review. Power #4 Power #5 Power #6 Disclaimer NO WRRNTY. Viconics, Inc.
