3 LCTN0016: Cnfiguring Dynamic DNS n the LAN-Cell 2 Intrductin In situatins where yu are unable t btain a static WAN IP address frm an ISP (wired r cellular), the LAN-Cell 2 can be cnfigured t autmatically update ne f several different dynamic DNS (DDNS) services with its current public IP address every time that IP address changes. These dynamic DNS services allw yu t map a static fully qualified dmain name (FQDN) t the dynamic IP address assigned by yur ISP. By using DDNS, mst applicatins can access the LAN-Cell and its remtely attached devices using the DDNS hstname name rather than the IP address. The LAN-Cell 2 supprts several DDNS service prviders; the mst cmmnly used service is DynDNS. This TechNte describes hw t cnfigure bth the DynDNS service and the LAN-Cell 2 fr Dynamic DNS updates. The prcess is similar fr all ther DDNS services. This Technte is fr illustratin purpses nly. Setting up a DynDNS Accunt & Hstname Befre cnfiguring the LAN-Cell, yu must create a lgin accunt with DynDNS and create yur desired hstname by which yu will access the LAN-Cell. 1. G t the DynDNS web site: 2. Create a new user accunt (Figure 1). Recrd the username and passwrd yu selected. Nte: D nt use nn-alphanumeric characters (~!@#$%^&*, etc) in the username and/r passwrd. Figure 1: DynDNS.cm Hme Page 3. Select the type f dynamic DNS service yu require. DynDNS currently ffers 3 chices: 1. Dynamic DNS Free Use ne f the pre-existing dmains available n DynDNS fr up t 5 different hsts. Requires that the dynamic IP address change at least nce every 30 days r have the expiratin timer manually reset. 2. Dynamic DNS Pr Up t 25 hsts which d nt expire n the dmains available frm DynDNS. Annual fee applies (currently $15.00). 3. Dynamic DNS Custm Up t 75 hsts n a dmain that yu wn. Yu must already have a dmain registered r register a new ne with DynDNS. Annual fee applies (currently $29.95). Yu can begin with the free DNS service and upgrade t the ther services as required. Page 2

4 LCTN0016: Cnfiguring Dynamic DNS n the LAN-Cell 2 4. Select the Accunt > My Hsts > Add Hst Services ptin (Figure 2) t define a new dynamic DNS hstname. If yu are using the Custm DNS service, select My Znes/Dmains and then Add Custm DNS t create a new Zne befre adding yur new hstname in that zne/dmain. Figure 2: Free DynDNS Hst Services 5. On the Add New Hstname screen (Figure 3), enter a descriptive name fr yur LAN-Cell (Hstname) and select ne f the available DynDNS dmains. 5 LCTN0016: Cnfiguring Dynamic DNS n the LAN-Cell 2 Select Hst with IP Address as the Service Type and click the Use aut detected IP address link t pre-fill the IP Address field. Add this hst t yur cart and check-ut. There is n cst fr the free hstnames, but yu must cmplete the check-ut prcess t activate the hstname. Cnfiguring DDNS Service in the LAN-Cell 2 1. Lg int the LAN-Cell s web interface and select the ADVANCED > DNS > DDNS screen (Figure 4) Figure 4: LAN-Cell DDNS Screen 2. Mark the DDNS Service as Active. 3. Select the DDNS Service Prvider frm the drp-dwn list ( 4. Enter the DDNS Username and Passwrd exactly as yu created them n the DDNS service web site. 5. Enter the Fully Qualified Dmain Name in the Dmain Name field. Nte, this must be the cmplete hstname plus the dmain name that yu created n the DDNS Service web site (Figure 3). Be sure t use the syntax hstname.dmain.tp-level-dmain (e.g. my-lan-cell.dnsalias.net) 6. Select the DDNS Type yu are using (Dynamic fr the Free r DNS Pr services r Custm fr the DNS Custm service). 7. Cnfirm that the WAN Interface with a dynamic IP address is selected. 8. Select the Use WAN IP Address ptin under Update Plicy. 9. Click Apply t save ur settings. The LAN-Cell will nw autmatically update the DDNS service with the current dynamic public IP address f the indicated interface every time the IP address changes. Page 4

6 LCTN0016: Cnfiguring Dynamic DNS n the LAN-Cell 2 Yu can cnfirm that DDNS is perating crrectly by checking the LAN-Cell s lg fr an entry such as (Figure 5): Figure 5: LAN-Cell Lg f Successful DDNS Update Yu can als return t the DynDNS web site and examine the current IP address assciated with yur hstname (Figure 6). 7 LCTN0016: Cnfiguring Dynamic DNS n the LAN-Cell 2 Usage Ntes Once the DDNS name has been successfully updated, yu can access the LAN-Cell and any devices cnnected t it by using the fully-qualified dmain name instead f the IP address. Therefre, in ur example: Yu can use the High Availability (HA) ptin n the LAN-Cell s DDNS screen in cnjunctin with the LAN-Cell s WAN fail-ver mechanisms s that the same DDNS hstname is used regardless f which WAN interface is active. See the LAN-Cell 2 User Guide fr mre infrmatin n the DDNS HA ptin. Trublehting Updates are nt psting t the DynDNS service: Ensure that the type f DynDNS accunt that yu've set up (Dynamic, Static, Custm) matches the value selected in the LAN-Cell. Check that yur DynDNS username and passwrd are crrectly entered in the LAN-Cell (case sensitive) D nt use characters such as &, ^, /, \, etc.) in yur DynDNS username r passwrd. Check that yur LAN-Cell has received valid DNS server infrmatin frm yur ISP. Check ADVANCED > DNS > SYSTEM fr the Name Server Address(es) in use. Als check the CACHE screen t see that dyndns.rg entries have been successfully reslved. DynDNS server s Last Updated time fr the hstname is much earlier than the current time and the LAN-Cell was just restarted. Check the Clck & Time-Zne settings n the LAN-Cell (MAINTENANCE > TIME&DATE). DynDNS shws updates using GMT/UTC. The DynDNS prtcl is such that if the WAN IP has nt changed, the LAN-Cell is nt suppsed t send the update t DynDNS. If yu frce the LAN-Cell t update DynDNS with an IP address that matches the IP address that DynDNS already has n file as the current IP address fr that hst name, then the update is ignred by the DynDNS servers. This is all in accrdance t DynDNS's plicies. The DynDNS web site status screen reflects the last time that the hst's IP address was actually changed, nt the last time it was cnfirmed t be the same. Please see DynDNS's plicy n when they will accept update transactins ( DynDNS is being updated with the crrect dynamic IP, but I still can t access the LAN-Cell using the DDNS name. Dynamic DNS recrds have a Time-T-Live (TTL) value that determines hw lng they are valid befre changes shuld be prpagated t ther DNS servers. The default fr DynDNS is 60 secnds. In additin, the DNS Name Servers used by yur PC may have lnger cache TTL s. This can result in lder IP addresses being returned fr sme time even after the DDNS servers have been successfully updated. Wait several minutes and try yur request again. Flush the DNS cache n yur PC and/r any intervening DNS Name Servers (r relay agents) # # # Page 6
