3 WELCOME As the patron of this event, I would like to warmly welcome participants and speakers to the 13th Stuttgart International Symposium organized by the Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS). Vehicle powertrains, vehicle technology, automotive electronics and software as well as production processes, design, materials science and rail vehicles - the main topics of this year s international conference show the variety of challenges that we face when developing the car of the future and the solution to our traffic problems. It is a key objective of the state government of Baden- Württemberg to promote and accelerate sustainable mobility. We are turning our attention not only to new drive systems and future technologies but also to the intelligent networking of existing forms of mobility. Our aim is to protect our natural livelihood and at the same time give a boost to science and business in Baden-Württemberg. In times of rising prices for energy and raw materials, large and medium-sized companies, trades and society as a whole will benefit from our pioneering role in the field of environmentally friendly mobility, an important leading industry of the future. As the birthplace of the automobile and one of the world s most innovative industrial regions, Baden-Württemberg offers the ideal conditions for producing environmentally friendly vehicles and intelligent technologies for traffic networking. I am convinced that the 13th Stuttgart International Symposium will be an important source of new impetus for this process. The event will also help to further consolidate the sustainability and expertise of Baden- Württemberg as a centre for the automotive industry. My very special thanks go to the Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS) and to all the partner companies involved in organizing and carrying out the Symposium. I hope that this event will be a great success and that all those taking part will find exciting lectures and interesting discussions, as well as some free time to discover the landscape and cultural diversity of Baden-Württemberg. > >> RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN AUTOMOTIVE AND ENGINE TECHNOLOGY The automotive industry is in a state of flux. The variety of vehicle and powertrain concepts and the development and implementation of new mobility concepts mean that our industry is constantly facing new challenges. Dealing with the complexity involved in this process requires the highest level of effort and innovation in all sectors of the industry, but especially in vehicle and engine technology. It is therefore particularly important to bring together research findings from science and industry. A major platform for an exchange of information and ideas between these two fields is the 13th Stuttgart International Symposium Automotive and Engine Technology on 26 and 27 February Leading experts present the current state of the art in technology, the latest research findings and future concepts. More than 70 papers at the symposium cover the entire bandwidth of current and future vehicle and powertrain technology, including topics relating to production processes and rail vehicles. The four parallel strands of the symposium provide opportunities for intensive discussion with experts. A further possibility for an exchange of ideas is offered by the parallel trade exhibition. We look forward to seeing you in Stuttgart, the birthplace of the automobile, and wish you a pleasant journey here as well as a stimulating and interesting stay in Stuttgart. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Bargende Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans-Christian Reuss Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochen Wiedemann Winfried Kretschmann Prime Minister of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg

4 13TH STUTTGART INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM Automotive and Engine Technology The 13th Stuttgart International Symposium Automotive and Engine Technology is organized by the Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS), once again this year in close cooperation with ATZlive. ATZlive is part of Springer Science + Business Media, the world s second largest journal publisher, and has acquired a high reputation in organizing conferences for automotive and engine developers in Germany and abroad. The specialist magazines ATZ Automobiltechnische Zeitschrift, MTZ Motortechnische Zeitschrift and ATZelektronik support the Stuttgart Symposium within the framework of a media partnership. With its wide range of topics addressing current and future issues from the entire field of vehicle and engine technology, the 13th Stuttgart Symposium brings together leading personalities from the automotive and supply industries, as well as development service providers, authorities, research institutes and universities. The focus is on an exchange of research findings aimed at accelerating their implementation in pre-development and series development projects. In that respect, this information platform is also a driver of innovation. The Stuttgart region is Europe s most important automotive location. The and the FKFS have a major influence on and wide-ranging responsibility for achieving sustainable mobility. I am all the more pleased therefore that the Stuttgart Symposium is able to make a valuable contribution. I wish you a fertile and stimulating exchange of information and ideas. Wolfgang Siebenpfeiffer Editor-in-Charge ATZ MTZ ATZelektronik Simultaneous interpreting in German/English and English/ German is provided on both days of the symposium. The German version of the program is available at or by calling DELEGATES The Stuttgart Symposium is addressed to employees of the automotive manufacturers and their suppliers from the fields of R&D, production, aerodynamics, simulation, vehicle engineering and powertrain development, as well as service providers, software companies and universities.
