I am passionate about education and my goal is to provide my students with a safe, engaging, exciting learning environment. My role as the instructor is to guide the student to build on his/her knowledge base and to advance that knowledge by engaging in meaningful learning experiences; experiences the student will find relevant to them. I believe in an educational process that utilizes real work experiences, as seen in Career and Technical Education. In this process, students experience hands-on skill sets and this builds for the student a data base of information upon which he/she can rely on to assist in making future life altering decisions. Their pursuit of a healthcare career may be a longstanding professional goal or they may want to experience health care to see if it is the profession for them. In my classroom, I must be sure that the resources available to the student meet their needs but also support the curriculum. I believe the information must be comprehensive, accurate and useful in representing how it is relevant to their learning experience. A positive classroom environment must be built to have a successful educational experience. I recognize that engaging students does not only encourage personal and social growth but also enhances development of social and leadership values. I work with the students to establish a rapport or relationship that enhances the learning process while minimizing the potential of disruptive behavior. I feel that each class will have their own dynamics. Therefore I believe that student behavior management and motivation must meet the class dynamics. Providing an effective learning environment relies on excellent communication skills. If communication is not well thought out, and planned the message received by the student may not be the message intended. I am passionate about teaching and I feel it shows in my teaching style and my relationships with my students. Communication is important with the parents and unless otherwise requested this is accomplished using messages. I utilize many different strategies in my class to make it more relevant and interesting to the students. Examples of these strategies are team building and collaborative projects, skills labs for hands-on experience, lecture, guest speakers, printed materials, other types of media and educational games. 7

Assessment is the tool that helps me to know what the student has learned. I utilize some traditional paper pen tests but I also see the value in assessing them with on-line learning based educational programs. Health Center 21 is the program that I have chosen to utilize in AHT. Other methods of assessment could be problem solving case studies, writing journal entries, research projects and reading and summarizing professional journals in the area of their intended profession. I believe that all methods of assessment must be fair, unbiased and impartial for all students. I utilize accommodations for students with individual educational plans as outlined by the support staff. I have high expectations for my students. I expect my students to reach for success and I will be along the way with them to help them attain their goals. I encourage parental involvement in the educational process. I suggest that grades be monitored by the student and parents on the Infinite Campus program utilized for grading. The student current attendance is also found on Infinite Campus. Grading and Assessment: Auburn Grading Scale will be used. A = % B = 89-80% C = 79-70% D = 69-60% F = 59-0% and below All graded materials such as, but not limited to, tests, quizzes, worksheets and any other material will be left in the students individual mailbox until the end of the grading period. At that time each student may remove the material. It is recommended that medical terminology information be kept in a folder for the remainder of the year to review for midterms and finals. Lab Experiences: Many of the hands-on activities take place in the health lab where safety and professionalism are learned, stressed and maintained at all times. Skills lab will provide the students with practical experience and exposure to equipment and procedures seen in many healthcare careers. Lab activities are utilized in the program to teach specific areas such as CPR, First Aid, Vital Signs, Anatomy in Clay, personal care, spirometry, EKG s, patient transfers, and body mechanics. Many lab assignments will include an assessment piece in addition to Professional Points. Course Assessment Plan: All assignments are to be handed in at the beginning of the class unless being reviewed during class. Assignments will be done before coming into class and will not be worked on during class time. Grades are calculated by total point method. Grades are up-to-date and will be available for review at the interim grading period and end of the semester. Interims are every 4.5 weeks and semesters are every 9 weeks. For Perry students, grades are done every 6 weeks. The grading is divided among aspects of completion of assigned tasks and tests. 8

Points for grades will come from tests, quiz scores, professional behavior, projects, lab grades, written assignments and homework. Tests are generally given at the end of each chapter or unit. Professional Points are done on a daily basis. Professional Points/Employability Skills In addition to the discipline guidelines presented in the Student/Parent Handbook, AHT students have the opportunity to earn up to ten points per day for professional points. To earn these points first they must be dressed appropriately in their full career wear as stated in this syllabus. Secondly, they must act in a professional manner following the guidelines established in this syllabus. And last, they must complete the daily objectives. Any variation in meeting these requirements will result in the loss of the professional points for that day. Behavior and preparedness are an essential part of a student s success at Auburn. The following situations will negatively impact professional points and loss of points: -Disrespect displayed towards fellow students or any staff member -Sleeping or appearing to be sleeping -Not working on task -Horseplay or unsafe activity -Abuse of school property --Absent from class (other than a school function or excused absence) -Unpleasant, antisocial, negative or belligerent attitude/comments -Misuse of any type of equipment -Unprepared for class -Late assignments -Not dressed in AHT uniform including not wearing student ID badge. NOTE: Continual violation of the Employability Skills will result in a reduced course grade. Continuous violation of the Employability Skills will result in additional disciplinary action determined on a case by case basis. Assignments Homework: Homework will be given as needed and will require approximately 30 minutes of time. This may include but is not limited to 2-column note-taking, studying for tests and making medical terminology flashcards. It is the expectation that medical terminology will be studied every night both the junior and senior years. As with any foreign language, practice and usage makes learning easier. Calendar of Course Assignments and Projects: Class assignment due dates are listed in Blackboard on a weekly basis and updated as needed. Students are responsible to complete work as assigned. 9

Late work: Late work will be docked after the due date. All late work is to be handed in at the beginning of the period. If not handed in by the end of the second late day, then a 0 will be given. Embedded Academics: Technical writing assignments and applied mathematics are incorporated into the curriculum. Students are encouraged to read newspapers and health care current events. Documentation is an integral part of all healthcare professions and therefore correct spelling is expected. To assist in maintaining and improving writing skills, each student will be expected to write on a journal topic frequently during the year. Journals will be graded not only for content but also grammar, sentence structure and spelling. Science in the class is mainly focused on an in-depth relationship between Anatomy, Physiology and Chemistry and how the sciences impact healthcare. A firm grasping of Anatomy and Physiology is an expected outcome of this two year class. Policies: Daily Routine Upon arrival the student will proceed to assigned waiting area. Both juniors and seniors are to wait in the assigned area until the bell rings for dismissal. Four periods of AHT (Allied Health Technology including Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology) Please remember: I dismiss the student not the bell. Homework may be given but the expectation is to review medical terminology every night to remain proficient in this course. Daily studying of medical terms is a must! Career Wear: Career dress will be worn everyday. This includes the uniform top, pants and class sweatshirt, when needed, to be given full professional points credit. Seniors must have their uniform on for lunch or no Professional Points will be given. Long sleeve black or white shirt may be ordered through the school and worn underneath scrub top for warmth. Clean, white tennis or nurses shoes will be worn. Flip flops or clogs are not considered safe to wear so they will not be considered appropriate with career wear. Name tag must be worn for the safety of the students and staff here at Auburn Career Center. Students are required to have and display on them at all times an Auburn Career Center ID card, which is provided free during the first weeks of school. The Auburn ID badge must be clearly visible and presented upon request to any teacher, administrator, resource office, or school personnel. If a student s original card is lost or stolen, a duplicate ID card must be purchased. The fee for a duplicate card is $5.00. Scrubs will be worn with scrub bottom tied at the waist and shirt outside of scrub pants. Scrub shirt will not be tucked, tied or pinned in any manner. Scrubs will be clean and free from wrinkles. 10

Daily personal care including bathing, deodorant and hair care is expected. Personal Mobile Technology Cell phones, MP3 players and other mobile devices are included in the definition of personal mobile technology. Auburn accounts are monitored, and the use of them falls under ACC policies. Auburn Career Center Information: Auburn Career Center is a full-service career center. Many people pass through the facility during the day. Therefore, it is important that students wear their student identification badges when in the building. Students who do not display an identification badge will be referred to the Main Office. Failure to wear an ID may result in loss of Professional points and be referred for discipline. 11

Student Support Services: Special Education Department: intervention specialist. Student Services: Guidance Counseling and Career Development Services. o You can make an appointment to see a guidance counselor, recruitment specialist or the LEAF advisor by visiting the Student Services office. Attendance: Attendance is an integral part of the learning process. More than five unexcused absences within a nine week grading period or three in a six week grading period may result in loss of credit. Excessive unexcused absences may result in disciplinary action. As stated in the handbook, make-up work must be completed as follows: one day for each missed day up to a total of five make-up days. Make-up assignments are due at the beginning of the period. The instructor will place handouts for missed classes in the student s mailbox. Missed work not turned in by the end of the fifth day will be given a grade of 0. Assignments under ten points are not eligible for make-up. There may be certain assignments that cannot be made up. It is the students responsibility to make up the work. All assignments for the week are on Blackboard for the student to know what has been missed. If poor attendance results in a grade of incomplete, the policy of1 day for each day absent up to 10 days to make it up is enforced and can be found in the Student Handbook will be followed. IT IS THE STUDENTS RESONSIBILITY TO MAKE UP WORK, NOT THE TEACHER. 12
