1 ANIMAL SCIENCE HEALTH & TECHNOLOGY COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE DESCRIPTION Animal Science Health & Technology is an instructional class designed to give the two-year graduated student an understanding of all aspects of the Animal Care field. The standards that are required to work and participate in this field will be developed by hands-on education. This course will focus on developing a full range of skills Animal Management, Veterinary Assistant, Basic Groomer, First-aid certification, Aquatics and Receptionist/Customer Service employee. Students will be given instruction beneficial in the furthering of their post-secondary education in the Animal Science field. INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY Students will be given the opportunity to work hands on with instructional material in all aspects of the Animal Science field. This will give them an overview of all the aspects of Animal Care. High standards will be required from each student due to the fact that we have live animals and abuse will not be tolerated. Students will be required to work in a team type setting. This helps to establish good work ethics with all types of individuals, but they will also be required to work on their own in class and out of class. Assessments will be made by different methods such as; Area packets that consist of worksheets, written assignments and lab practical exams with individual presentations. Written exams, tests, quizzes, oral presentations and a daily lab performance grade will also be used in evaluations. COURSE GOALS 1. Student will demonstrate a basic knowledge of small animal care 2. Handling and restraint of a wide variety of animals. 3. Develop the basic prep-work of grooming of all animals. 4. Have an exceptional knowledge of aquarium work. 5. Demonstrate the basic knowledge of receptionist and customer service work. 6. A side overview of Animal Science Pre-Veterinary Technician/Pre-Veterinary. 7. Students will receive Red Cross Human and Pet First-Aid Certification in their senior year. 8. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Certification in their junior year. MAJOR COURSE ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE PROJECTS: Students will work on all projects throughout the Animal Science course year. They are the following: 1
2 JUNIOR YEAR Feed, clean and maintain all live animals in the lab Set up and maintain proper aquarium and identify fish and diseases Observe all animals health needs Basic nail/ear/bathing maintenance of all animals in the lab. Proper ear cleaning Correct brushing Proper basic prep-work Demonstrate bathing techniques Safely drying of all animals Basic scissor and pattern work of all breeds. Demonstrate proper way of handling and restraint of all animals. Demonstrate knowledge of proper sanitation and health disposal of of all lab animal feces. Provide proper customer service billing Provide proper customer service phone usage Provide proper customer service relationship and check-ins Maintain a sanitary lab. 2. RELATED ACADEMIC PROJECTS: Basic animal anatomy Research Small Animal diseases All aspects of small animals well being Learn all AKC dog breeds Learn all cat breeds Heartworm Diseases Bird/Reptile Health Examination Procedures State Animal Science Competition 3. To that end, the Animal Science Technology Program not only places a heavy emphasis on safety training, but requires that each student in the program take and pass safety tests before they begin any work that may have specific safety issues. The 4
5 Animal Management Program gives two such tests during the course of the program. General Lab Safety: The Animal Science Technology Program has a safety test that is intended to cover these issues and a written test to assess the student s understanding of these issues and how to deal with them. This general lab safety test must be passed at 100% before the student will be allowed to begin working in the lab. A note will be sent home to the parent (s) indicating that the student has passed the test and will require a signature from them. This will be returned to the program and kept on file. Machine/Equipment Specific Safety: Students will begin using different types of machines and equipment at various times throughout the program. Prior to using each machine or piece of equipment for the first time, he/she will be instructed in its safe and proper use. A test may be required to assess student understanding. These tests must be passed with 100% accuracy. General Safety Policies: 1. Students will be given safety instruction throughout the program. Students must pass any safety tests associated with this instruction before beginning any actual work in the specific area. 2. Parents of students who fail the general lab safety or any specific safety test three consecutive times, will be required to attend a conference to discuss that student s requirements for continued participation in the program. This conference will be with the program teacher, program supervisor as well as the student. 5
6 Coursework Requirement; To be considered a completer and to walk across our stage at the TCTC completion ceremony, students must complete all required components of the program as set forth in the Animal Science course of study. These include below items; OSHA Teaching students to work safely is more important than teaching any skill in any program. The TCTC has made passing the 10 Hour OSHA safety course a requirement for successful completion of this program. This nationally recognized certificate will go into the student s portfolio upon completion, and because safety is so important to employers these days, it gives our students an important advantage when applying for a job. The $25.00 fee ($275 if taken after graduation) is part of the program fees and may be re-assessed if the student fails to complete the initial test successfully. Students who take and fail any part of their 10-hour OSHA exam three times, will be allowed on instructor activated reset at no charge. Students who fail any part of their exam three times after this reset will not be awarded their OSHA certificates. Students will be given 10 hours in school time with a total completion grade given during their second nine week grading period. SENIOR PROJECTS All Animal Science Seniors will be required to participate in the Senior Projects program. This will cumulate over the year beginning with a research paper involved with the TCTC English department. A hands-on product developed that reflects the research paper. Finishing with a Senior Celebration toward the end of their school year in which students will showcase their products along with their portfolio s built on their units. TCTC ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS; Animal Science curriculum reflects required coursework with benchmarks that must be met to receive a completion certificate. Due to that fact attendance in an important part of the program. Students may not miss more than 36 days in the two years of the program. All absences including medical, unexcused, excused, vacation, court and funeral will be counted against those 36 days. If student exceeds those days, they will not receive the Animal Science Health and Technology Completion Certification. 6
7 GRADING SCALE The majority of the lab grade will be based on attendance, daily lab performance and hands-on practical examinations with the remainder of the grade based on written assignments, quizzes/tests, lab notebooks and presentations given throughout the year. Animal Science Health & Technology grading scale is in accordance with the Trumbull Career and Technical Centers grading school policy. 92%---A 83%---B 74%---C 66%---D 65%-and below --F Assignment Due Dates and Credit for Late Work All homework and projects will be assigned a due date and all work is expected to be completed by that time. After that date, the teacher, at his or her discretion and depending on circumstances, may allow a one day extension, however all late work will be reduced in value by 15% (100% will now be 85%; 75% will now be 60% etc.). No work will be accepted more than one day late. Absence from class does not extend the deadline for work assigned. If a student is absent on a day an assignment is due, the work will be due immediately upon their return to class. 7
8 Criteria for students to be eligible to return for their Senior year 1. All TCTC programs are made up of at least four courses. Students must pass a minimum of 50% of the courses in their program area in their junior year. If a course if offered in both the Junior and Senior year, the junior year course MUST be passed to continue on to the senior year. 2. Students should not have missed more than 18 days of classroom instruction for any reason. 3. Students not passing all courses in their program area in their junior year or missing more than 18 total days of class are required to attend a meeting with their parent, program teacher and the program supervisor to determine their likelihood for success with the circumstances that have resulted in failure. 4. If a student has failed a course in their program area in the junior year and is permitted to return, the student and parent must sign a form stating that they understand they are not permitted to participate in the senior ceremony. 5. Students with excessive absences or multiple major disciplinary offenses during their junior year must schedule a conference with the Dean of Students and a parent to determine their admission status for their senior year. 6. Students with additional barriers to graduation (including credit deficiencies and additional home school requirements), must develop and adhere to a plan to make up credits before they will be permitted to return for their senior year. Senior Completion Criteria: 1. Successful completion of a two year career/technical program and all program requirements with passing grades and activities; as well as academic classes needed for graduation. In Programs that have transitioned to courses, students must pass all program related courses in order to participate in the Senior Completion Ceremony. 2. Successful completion of all 4 phases of the Senior Project 3. Must maintain a 90% or better attendance record for two years 4. All fees must be paid to be eligible to participate in the Senior Ceremony. 5. Students must attempt all licensure and/or certification exams that they qualify to take in their program area. 8
