1 .Iroquois West Middle School Physical Education Syllabus Physical Education students will be involved in a variety of activities, designed to improve physical fitness, coordination and sport specific skills. Students may also develop content knowledge pertaining to nutrition, dieting, mental health, the development of fitness plans, and the ability to link the importance of physical activity with life-long endeavors. Required Materials: Students are responsible for furnishing the following items for Physical Education: Uniform:. Students must wear a plain white or grey t-shirt, and red athletic school appropriate length shorts, and non-marking supportive tennis shoes with shoe laces! No undershirts or sweats that were worn to school may be worn in PE. Absolutely No FLIP-FLOPS, SLIPPERS or SLIP ON SHOES. Shoes Must be able to be tied. Absences: If a Student is absent they will receive a ZERO for the day. However, a student can make up the points missed on EXCUSED ABSENT days ONLY. o How to make up and excused absent: Students will need to complete online article summary to make up for the day missed. Articles can be anything related to health, sports, or fitness and can come from newspapers, magazines, or the Internet. They will then go online and fill out the required fields and submit their summary online. o Steps for finding and filling out online summary. Go to the Iroquois West Middle School Webpage. Click on the Tab that says Staff. On the drop down menu click on the Physical Education/ Health Tab. Click on Article Summary Tab at the top. This will take you to the page to fill out all the required field. You will need to enter the correct information In complete sentences (Where applicable) in each box in order to move to the next page. At the end of the article summary you will need to hit submit. *** DO NOT hit the back button at any point during this process or you will lose your entered information and have to start over. The article(s) need to be turned in by the end of the week in which the absence(s) occurred in order to receive credit. - Example: If your student is absent Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday your student will need to have their articles submitted online by that Friday of the same week. If your student is absent Thursday or Friday they will need to have their articles submitted online by Tuesday of the following week. If the online article summary is not submitted on time the Zero will stand. o If the absence is unexcused it cannot be made up. An unexcused absence is considered a skip, and will result in a zero for the day. **It is the student s responsibility to complete the article on time in order to earn credit.**

2 No-Dresses/Unprepared: o Students will receive a zero for the day. o Students that do not dress in PE will not be allowed to participate in athletic events that day. (Practice and/or games) THIS IS A DISTRICT RULE! Injuries: Students must have a note from a doctor to be excused from an activity in PE. A parent may send a note, but notes from a parent will only last 1 DAY. If a student has a doctor s note they must have clearance from the doctor before they may return to activity in PE. A student with a note must still dress for class, as there may be stretching, refereeing, or other activities he/she may be able to do. In cases of long term medical restrictions, the teachers will arrange for the student to be in a study hall. (This will be decided by the administration/teachers) *If injured during class please report immediately to instructor so we may follow proper procedures. Lockers: Each student is assigned PE locker It is the student s responsibility to lock up his/her belongings. We do not accept responsibility for lost or stolen items. When not in class, the student keeps his/her PE clothes in the assigned small PE locker. If student loses or breaks the lock it will be his/her responsibility to pay for a new one from the school. NO CELL PHONES, IPODS, MP3 PLAYERS OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE ALLOWED DURING P.E. CLASS OR IN LOCKERROOM (WITHOUT PRIOR TEACHER PERMISSION). Additional PE Expectations: Be in the designated area in the gym assigned by the teacher before the tardy bell rings. o Students need to be dressed and ready to go within the 4 minutes following attendance. Failure to do so will is being unprepared/tardy. Be dressed in proper clothing to participate: white/grey PE shirt, red shorts or sweats, tennis shoes (must have laces). ABSOLUTELY NO JEWELRY Including rubber bands, baller bands, hair ties, etc. (Medical alert jewelry will be allowed) Clothes must be taken home and washed once a week. You may want to think about having an extra set of clothes to leave at school just in case you forget your clothes on Monday. Students are not permitted to participate in any activity or use any equipment without teacher supervision. Leave the locker rooms cleaner than you found them. Keep food/gum/candy out of the locker rooms (I HATE MICE!!!) After changing, students are to remain in the gym until the final bell rings for dismissal. Display good sportsmanship at all times; be positive to all teammates and opponents.

3 .Grades shall be determined according to the following criteria utilizing the rubric below. Self-assessment rubrics will be used twice a quarter to chart each student s progress. We will only post grades online for mid-terms and quarter grades. While we keep track of each student s daily/weekly grades in our grade books for eligibility we are not entering them online because they are averaged on the rubric. The following listed are the Rubric categories Attendance & Participation-Each student is expected to take an active part in all aspects of the curriculum. The desired result is to have each student give his/her best to achieve the objectives of the curriculum. Missing more than 5 classes (any combination of absences or unprepared) will require students to take make-up classes to receive a passing grade. Skill Development- Various rubrics will be utilized to assess the skill and knowledge of students. Exams- written and oral tests may be used to asses student learning. Differences in the capabilities of individuals will be taken into consideration when grading. Competencies will be utilized to set realistic goals toward the progression of the individual student. Physical Fitness Includes CV Endurance, flexibility, muscle strength and endurance. Differences in the capabilities of individuals will be taken into consideration when grading. Cooperative Skills students are expected be cooperative, positive and respectful of others. Safety Awareness Students should be expected to follow all safety guidelines and Procedures. Personal Efforts students should take appropriate risks and work enthusiastically to do his/her best.

Student is a positive example to peers, respectful of other s opinions and place group goals ahead of own ambitions. 3-Student is frequently cooperative. Contributes in a positive manner. 2-Student is sometime cooperative. Does not always contribute in a positive manner. 1-Student is rarely cooperative. 0-Student makes little or no attempt to cooperate. Safety Awareness 4-Student can be counted on to follow all safety guidelines and procedures. 3-Student occasionally needs to reminded of safety guidelines. 2-Student often needs supervision to remind him/her of safety guidelines. 1-Student requires individual supervision on a regular basis. 0-Student does not follow guidelines. Cognitive Development (Student Knowledge) 4-Student received between on unit test; has excellent understanding of games rules, strategies and procedures. 3-Student received between on unit test; has a good understanding of game rules, strategies, and procedures. 2-Student received between on unit test; has fair understanding of games rules, strategies and procedures. 1-Student received between on unit test; has little understanding of games rules, strategies and procedures. 0-Student received below a 59 on unit test; has poor understanding of game rules, strategies and procedures. Personal Efforts 4- Student always takes appropriate risk and works hard to do his/her best; energetically involved in all activities. 3-Student often tries hard to do his/her best; participates in all activities. 2-Student sometimes needs to be addressed regarding actively taking part in lesson. 1- Student tries but will give up easily. 0-Student makes little or no effort to actively participate. Skill Development 4- Student successfully performs all essential skills at a proficient level during activity (90-100% of the time). 3- Student successfully performs most essential skills at a competent level during activity (80-90% of the time). 2-Student performs skills fairly during activity. 1-Student performs skills at an inconsistent level during activity. 0- Student does not try to perform skills during activity.

In case of injury or illness, students are required to participate unless they have a note from a doctor. This is to ensure that no one tries to get out of a workout when an injury is not hindering. So, if your child feels they may be limited in some way in this class, please write them a note so they will not lose effort points for that day.
