1 HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY PHARMACY TECHNICIAN COURSE SYLLABUS Instructor: Amy Garland-Rusnak, RN BSN COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Health Science Academy is designed for College Tech Prep and career technical education for Trumbull County students in grades The course of study portion of this program reflects the academic and technical competencies for secondary education students. The technical focus is on the blending of a variety of health care concepts into hands-on applications for the improvement of life. Students transitioning to post-secondary education will receive reinforcement and additional training in these areas. During the first semester all Health Science Academy (HSA) students will complete course work that is basic/core to all health care programs. They will then go into one of two pathways in the medical profession. The Pre-Nursing pathway will focus on therapeutic or hands on care, growth and development throughout the lifespan and basic pharmacology knowledge. The Pharmacy Technician pathway is part of the Health Science Academy at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center. The first semester is comprised of the core elements such as medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, career exploration, business processes, medical math, legal/ethical responsibilities, safety, CPR/First Aid and measuring vital signs. The third and fourth nine weeks will be spent studying the required elements necessary for passing a nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician Exam. The first semester of the senior year will contain both the Nurse Aide Training Program and a continuation of the Pharmacy Technician program. Upon successful completion of the Nurse Aide Training Program, the student will be eligible to take the Nurse Aide state test. To pass the classroom/lab portion of the Nurse Aide Training Program, the student must maintain a 80% to be eligible to participate in clinical. If this test is passed, the student will be able to work as a State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA), making between $8-12 dollars an hour. Students are expected to take and pass the STNA certification test. Students must have at least 80% in the STNA course to be eligible to take the STNA certification test and not miss more than three days, for any reason, during the STNA class. The second semester of the senior year, will focus completely on skills needed for a Pharmacy Technician. Upon successful completion, the student will be eligible to test to become a nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). ARTICULATION AGREEMENT: Students have the opportunity to earn up to twenty-four credit hours toward an Associate of Technical Study Degree from Kent State University/Trumbull. Earning this associate degree helps the student to build business, management and communication skills necessary to become an effective supervisor. To receive these twenty-fours credit hours, the student must pass the Pharmacy Technician program at TCTC with an A or B average and pass the National Certification Exam to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician. The student must then enroll at KSU/Trumbull and request these hours.
2 Students may participate in College Credit plus program through Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) to earn 5 college credits through the STNA program. All EGCC admissions and class requirements must be completed to qualify. Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit through an Ohio Articulation agreement (CTAG) through the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR). Students must earn a B or better in Medical Terminology course , and pass the Web Exam at the end of the course. INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY: Students will work independently and in groups to complete course topics. Instruction will be presented through lectures, students rotating through modules, which are designed to develop skills, attitudes and work habits sufficient to enter and make progress in health occupations, individual journal-keeping and independent research projects. Students will also work in health-care facilities to gain on the job experience. TEXTBOOKS: Thomson Learning, Introduction To Health Care, 2ndED, DCM, Medical Terminology 350 Series, Morton s Pharmacy Calculation, 2 nd Ed, Morton s The Pharmacy Technician, 3 rd Ed, and Elsevier s Pharmacy Management Software, Passassured (CD-ROM), Elseview s Pharmacology for Pharmacy Technicians, Elseview s Pharmacy Technician Principles and Practice, 3 rd Edition, PASSASSURED. Students will complete a daily log, reflecting on what they have learned, what they have experienced in class or the community and how their learning relates to their own understanding of their health and the health of others. Reading Assignment: Each week, students will choose an article on a health-related issue and complete an assessment sheet that includes the title and publication date, a summary and personal

Over the course of a nine-week grading period, students must choose no less than three newspaper articles, three magazine articles, one Internet article and one report from television or the media. Job Shadowing/ Community Service: Students will participate in a job shadowing experience to help the student to see what an actual day in a health care setting is like.. It must be completed by the first Monday in May of the senior year. The student is responsible for obtaining the pharmacy site (with approval of the instructor), transportation to and from the site and documentation of the hours. At NO TIME, can this be done during regular school hours! Senior Project: Each senior student will be responsible for completing a project that is reflective of their program. This project will be assigned and approved by their program instructor. It must be completed as a required part of their program completion. ATTENDANCE POLICY: In the health care field, attendance is of the utmost importance. This class will follow the TCTC guidelines on attendance found in your Student Handbook! If you have an excused absence, it is your responsibility to see me for the assignment. The student may NOT miss more than 36 days in two years for any reason in order to receive their certificate of completion.
5 GRADING SYSTEM: Grades will be calculated based on lab work, lab competency tests, classroom tests, journals, healthcare articles, lab grade, daily worksheets and workbook grades. Students are expected to take and pass the STNA certification test. Students must have at least 80% in the STNA course to be eligible to take the STNA certification test and not miss more than three days, for any reason, during the STNA class. The TCTC Grading System is: A B C D 0-65 F Discipline: This class will follow the TCTC guidelines for discipline found in your Students Handbook. General lab rules will be handed out the first week of class. If you need extra help during the school year, please do not hesitate to see me. I can make myself available to you at any time. It is my goal to help make your stay here in the Pharmacy Technician program at the TCTC, a happy and successful experience.
