Cyber Security graduates will apply computer security and information assurance concepts covering threats and vulnerabilities, and will integrate prevention methods at hardware, software, and human levels. B. Cyber Security graduates will apply network security and information assurance concepts covering threats and vulnerabilities, and will integrate prevention methods at the hardware level. C. Cyber Security graduates will carry out duties and tasks with respect and consideration of legal factors, standard operating policies, and standard industry practices. D. Cyber Security graduates will conduct activities within safety protocols published by vendors and regulating agencies that minimize physical risk and damage to property or person. IV. Course Description & Introduction Identify elements of firewall design, types of security threats and responses to security attacks. Use Best Practices design, implement, and monitor a network security plan. Examine security incident postmortem reporting and ongoing network security activities. V. Course Competencies Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Demonstrate system security skills through firewall implementation and testing. (Links to Section III-A & B) B. Use system tools, practices, and relevant technologies to implement a security plan. (Links to Section III-C & D) C. Evaluate practices, tools, and technologies to identify security breaches, sources of attacks, and protect mission critical systems. (Links to Section III- B) D. Establish an appropriate level of security based on an analysis of security logs. (Links to
3 ITSY-2301 Page 3 of 6 Section III-B) E. Use relevant tools to secure a network, and respond to and follow up on various types of attacks. (Links to Section III-B) VI. Course Learning Outcomes A. Students will learn how to install and configure a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall appliance. (Links to Section V-A) B. Students will learn how to design and implement a network security policy. (Links to Section V-B) C. Students will learn how to identify attacks using the firewall s reporting feature. (Links to Section V-D) D. Students will learn how to implement a plan of response to an attack. (Links to Section V- E) E. Students will learn how to document and file evidence of an attack. (Links to Section V- E) F. Students will learn how to build and install an open-source firewall solution (pfsense) (Links to Section V-A & C) VII. Assessment Methods & Grading Policy: Lab Exercises 20% A Quizzes 25% B Participation 5% C Midterm Exam 20% D Final Exam 30% F 0-59 A. Labs This course is hands-on intensive and therefore laboratory exercises are an integral part of the expectations. Completing the lab assignments prepares you to be successful on the practical exams and the final exam. 1. Self-assessed/instructor observation Labs will be graded based on the student s successful completion and the instructor s observation of activities. B. Quizzes A quiz will be given to assess every chapter presented. Quizzes will primarily be short answer type (multiple choice, T/F, and matching). Quizzes will be administered in class via Moodle. No makeup quiz will be allowed without prior arrangement with instructor or documented excuse. C. Participation / Notebook Participation in lectures and class time is crucial to the success of the student. Students are required to take notes and produce their notebook at regular intervals for inspection by the instructor. Any of the following WILL RESULT in grade deduction for that day of class. 1. Unexcused absence (Excused requires prior approval or doctor note). 2. Failure to be on time (5 min after scheduled time is late). 3. Failure to present notebook when asked. 4. Failure to adhere to the policies and procedures outlined in this syllabus and the
4 ITSY-2301 Page 4 of 6 Student Handbook. D. Midterm Exams The midterm exam will cover all the course material presented up to the test date. There will be no opportunity to make-up the midterm exam. E. Final Exam The final exam will cover all of the course material that has been presented up to the test date. Like the midterm exam, this will be part question/answer and part practical with the same portion weights. There will be no opportunity to makeup the final exam. VIII. Additional Resources & Supplies: (To be provided by student): Notebook, Pens/Pencils this is important because taking notes is proven to help students information retention. Taking notes is required in this course. X. Class Participation Policy & Student Conduct: A. Texas State Technical College challenges students to be learners who assume responsibility for being a part of a community of scholars. Student presence and participation in the classroom is an important component of this challenge. Furthermore, as part of its mission, TSTC offers an education that prepares students for professional employment. Each student is encouraged to develop a professional work ethic that reflects responsibility, initiative, and teamwork. B. Students are expected to attend all classes. Students who are absent from class miss opportunities to contribute to the learning environment of the classroom and are developing patterns that will not be tolerated in the professional workplace. C. In light of the above, the student is responsible for all assigned course work and cannot be absolved of this responsibility. When enrolled in a particular course, the student is obligated to do all of the work assigned. Punctual and regular attendance is vital to the discharge of this obligation and absences, excused or not, do not alter this responsibility. D. Students whose absences exceed 15 percent of the scheduled classes and laboratories may receive an F for the course. E. Student Conduct: 1. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and to dress in the appropriate attire for the class being presented. 2. Each student is expected to act responsibly and take the consequences for his/her action or inaction as appropriate.
5 ITSY-2301 Page 5 of 6 XI. F. Classroom Etiquette: 1. An atmosphere of respect will be expected of all within the classroom. 2. Any open displays of prejudice, harassment, etc. will not be tolerated. 3. Any student who disrupts the classroom will be asked to leave and will receive a zero on all work due that day and will be counted as absent for the day. 4. A second disruption by that student will be grounds for the student to be administratively dropped from the class and other disciplinary action will be taken as appropriate. 5. There will be no smoking, dipping, chewing tobacco or use of profane language in the classroom. G. Cheating / Plagiarism Policy: TSTC expects all students to engage in scholastic pursuits in a manner that is beyond reproach. Students are expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity. Any student found guilty of scholastic dishonesty is subject to disciplinary action. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on academic work (such as copying, bribing, or buying/selling tests), plagiarism (claiming another s work as one s own without acknowledgement INCLUDING Internet data), and collusion (unauthorized collaboration). See College Catalogue for additional information. Be Advised: All involved students will receive a 0 for their work on the first violation. Further violations will result in disciplinary action. Safety: All students in this course will comply with all general safety rules, which apply to the type of activity in progress in each class. Violation of course safety rules can result in grade penalties and/or other appropriate disciplinary action. XII.
