1 HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY PHARMACY TECHNICIAN COURSE SYLLABUS Instructor: Karen DiMauro, RN COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Health Science Academy is designed for College Tech Prep and career technical education for Trumbull County students in grades The course of study portion of this program reflects the academic and technical competencies for secondary education students. The technical focus is on the blending of a variety of health care concepts into hands-on applications for the improvement of life. Students transitioning to post-secondary education will receive reinforcement and additional training in these areas. During the first semester all Health Science Academy (HSA) students will complete course work that is basic/core to all health care programs. They will then go into one of three pathways. Therapeutic or hands on care will be taught in the pre-nursing pathway. The medical assisting program will focus on clinical and clerical administrative skills needed to work in an ambulatory care setting. The Pharmacy Technician pathway is part of the Health Science Academy at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center. The first semester is comprised of the core elements such as medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, career exploration, business processes, medical math, legal/ethical responsibilities, safety, CPR/First Aid and measuring vital signs. The third and fourth nine weeks will be spent studying the required elements necessary for passing a nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician exam. The first semester of the senior year will contain both the Nurse Aide Training Program and a continuation of the Pharmacy Technician program. Upon successful completion of the Nurse Aide Training Program, the student will be eligible to take the Nurse Aide state test. If this test is passed, the student will be able to work as a State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA), making between $8-12 dollars an hour. The second semester of the senior year, will focus completely on skills needed for a Pharmacy Technician. Upon successful completion, the student will be eligible to test to become a nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
2 INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY: Students will work independently and in groups to complete course topics. Instruction will be presented through lectures, students rotating through modules, which are designed to develop skills, attitudes and work habits sufficient to enter and make progress in health occupations, individual journal-keeping and independent research projects. Students will also work in health-care facilities to gain on the job experience. TEXTBOOKS: Thomson Learning, Introduction To Health Care, 2ndED, DCM, Medical Terminology 350 Series, Morton s Pharmacy Calculation, 2 nd Ed, Morton s The Pharmacy Technician, 3 rd Ed, and Elsevier s Pharmacy Management Software, Passassured (CD-ROM). CURRICULUM: This course will follow the Trumbull Career and Technical Center s Health Science Academy Pharmacy Technician Course of Study. 3 MAJOR COURSE PROJECTS AND ASSIGNMENTS: Daily Journal: Since the study of health care involves the study of the body and it s functions, patient care techniques and documentation skills, personal insights, feelings, and reflections are crucial to full understanding. Students will complete a daily log, reflecting on what they have learned, what they have experienced in class or the community and how their learning relates to their own understanding of their health and the health of others. Reading Assignment: Each week, students will choose an article on a health-related issue and complete an assessment sheet that includes the title and publication date, a summary and personal opinion of the article. Over the course of a nine-week grading period, students must choose no less than three newspaper articles, three magazine articles, one Internet article and one report from television or the media. Job Shadowing: Students will participate in a job shadowing experience to help the student to see what an actual day in a health care setting is like. Student will be responsible for acquiring job site with the approval of the instructor. The student is responsible for his/her own transportation to the job site. This must be completed as part of the requirements for obtaining their certificate of completion. This will be done in the junior year. Senior Project: Each senior student will be responsible for completing a project that is reflective of their program. This project will be assigned and approved by their program instructor. It must be completed as a required part of their program completion. All four parts of the senior project must be passed to receive their certificate of completion Community Service: Each student must complete 50 hours of volunteer time in a pharmacy setting. This time must be documented and reported on.
