2 Digital Photography for Adults Course Description: This Basic Photography course is designed for any photographer just starting out. The Digital Photography course is designed to introduce students to the basic processes and techniques of working with digital photography. The course covers camera operation, shooting styles, image adjustments and corrections using image editing software, digital photo printing, photographic history, aesthetic understanding, and photography's social impact. Students will learn how to use photography as a creative tool for self-expression, social exploration and still documentation. Learning Objectives and Outcomes: Students will learn the fundamental key features of the Digital SLR, and its use. They will be introduced to various point-and-shoot techniques, and will be experience different assignments involving travel to various interesting visual areas in the city. All the classes consists of technical lectures where students will learn a new function in each session and its method of application Handouts will be given to each student, in each session, also as per the requirement. Each Student will be personally guided and given individual tuition helping them to achieve their goals during the workshop. They will learn the use of composition, light and space. We will also look at: Selection: A short piece on showing your pictures to others. Composition: How to compose an image through the viewfinder. Cropping: How to crop your images. Viewpoint: Another important aspect of composition. Exposures: Taking pictures manually and moving away from the autosettings. Shutter speed and Apertures. Lighting: Difference between the indoor and outdoor shooting. Photo editing: Basic Adobe LIGHTROOM retouching will be introduced to them, in order to enhance their images. Printing your own images.
3 Learning Activities: This is a hands-on course and you would need to do a lot of outdoor shooting. Label photos with the location and relevant facts such as the time of day, weather conditions and a short description of the atmosphere and feel of the photo. General Course Requirements: Digital SLR Camera with an ability to set all necessary functions (aperture, shutter speed) manually Consumables/peripherals for their cameras such as flash cards and batteries. A notebook Additional supplies are also required and cost may vary according to the individual need. PROJECTS This course combines short presentations with hands-on demonstrations, in-class and outdoor exercises and individual assistance from the instructor. This is a structured syllabus course; however students are given the freedom to complete projects at their own rate and pace. Lesson 1 Introduction Students will start with a brief introduction to the camera, Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO and will practice through out the week. Lesson 2 Looking through the Details A 10 Min Walk from your front door a close up detail study of found objects in your nearby area. Black and white and sepia tone or other colored tones will be part of the experiment. Students will also explore compositional techniques to gain a better understanding of the importance of composition in photography.
4 Lesson 3 Finding Similarities Choose a theme to delve into, and take photos to represent the amazing diversity within the theme. The theme should be related to Nature. The theme should ideally be one thing, or a collective of things that make up a particular theme. Students can work with more than one theme if they like. Some suggestions: Trees, Rocks, Mountains, Flowers, Leaves, Creature homes, Webs, Clouds, Sunsets, Moon scenes, Cats or another specific animal Lesson 4 Portrait Photography Note: it is important to focus on street life, and everyday people while shooting portraits. Explore culture e.g. photos of elderly people, construction workers, women in veil etc. Focus will be on cultural spaces or street life -taking pictures of family members and friends will not part of the assignment. Lesson 5 Manmade objects: are usually of no value to human eyes, we mostly ignore their banal existence in our lives, and often it can turn into a composition that narrates abstract visuals or pre recorded time. Investigate staircases, windows, road signs, poles, bricks, nails, construction spaces etc, anything that is not part of nature and purely man made. OR Manmade co-existing in nature: students will look for objects installed in nature; it could be a bench in the park or poles behind the bright horizon, buildings etc and find the corelationship between them. Lesson 6 Perspective Introducing Adobe Photoshop Light room for Image Editing Course Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate the basic processes and techniques of working with digital photography. 2. Demonstrate the ability to use computer software to download, image correction, edit and print digital images. 3. Demonstrate the following technical skills: ISO control, shutter speed/motion, F- Stops / Depth of Field, use various lenses, photographic exposure, tonal and colour corrections, computer-driven image editing, digital inkjet printing.

Through the gathering of technical and aesthetic information create photos that express the following formal qualities: line, pattern, balance, composition, shape, form, light and shadow, texture, vantage point and print quality. 5. Articulate the quality and success of a work of art including the critical evaluation of their own work. 6. Demonstrate an aesthetic awareness of their visual world. 7. Have the ability to express and communicate an idea or feeling visually. 8. Demonstrate an understanding of the technical and aesthetic differences between traditional and digital photography.
