9 Can we use lighting to make our photographs more creative and visually exciting? Lighting can be used to give photography an emotive quality. This emotive quality demonstrates the photographer s talent and artistic creativity. Cameras contain certain mechanical parts such as lens, shutters and apertures, which allow the photographer to control light exposure and depth of field. In a Single Lens Reflex camera lens, shutters and apertures can be adjusted to control how the light enters the camera, how much light enters the camera and how long light enters the camera. Photographers must always be aware of their light, whether it s natural light or set up in a studio. The ISO adjustment of a Digital Camera relates to the CCD sensor and mimics the ISO of traditional film. C: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: Choose and adjust the lens according to the situation and the desired photographic results. Adjust the shutter speed and/or F-stops according to the situation and the desired photographic results. Adjust the ISO according to the situation and the desired photographic results. Use natural light or studio light in creative and emotionally expressive ways. Articulate about the use of lighting in a variety of photographs and express the resulting emotional quality. Use the cameras and equipment in the appropriate way, demonstrating proficiency in their use. Capture a variety of photographs within the parameters of each assignment focusing on the use of lighting. Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate and creative use of various shutter speeds and F-stops, evidenced by their use in the student s captured images. Demonstrate an understanding of depth of field and achieve mastery at manipulating it through the use of aperture settings. Demonstrate an understanding of the digital ISO adjustments as evidenced by their appropriate and creative use. Achieve mastery at manipulating available lighting in an effort to create artistic and visually exciting photographs. Print and present their photographs in a professional manner as assigned. Create and maintain a portfolio of their work. Demonstrate proper classroom etiquette, following all stated guidelines for mature and professional behavior. 8
