3 BASIC DESIGN STUDIO A (MCD1330) To provide a foundation unit this introduces the understanding of two-dimensional design principles to students of art and design. Nil. 1. Understand and apply the design process 2. Recognise and analyse 2 dimensional elements of design: shape, tone, line, texture, pattern, and colour; 3. Recognise, analyse and use the principles of design 4. Recognise some of the theoretical and psychological issues of selected colour theories; and, 5. Recognise, analyse and use typography 6. Understand and apply the nomenclature of design Assignments: 100%. This unit consists of 9 projects. Each of the assigned projects demands the implementation of various elements and principles of design. VISUAL ARTS STUDIO A (MCD1340) The general aim of this unit is to, in conjunction with Unit B, facilitate a greater understanding of visual arts studio practice in 2D and 3D studies. Admission to the course. 1. Develop a greater understanding of 2D and 3D practice through the given projects. 2. Explore their personal understanding of 2D and 3D practice in relation to the selected modern art movements.

4 Body of work - Sculpture: 33% Body of work - Printmaking: 33% Body of work - Painting: 34% DRAWING A (MCD1270) The general aim of this unit is to, in conjunction with Unit B, introduce basic drawing skills to the students. Nil. 1. Demonstrate some understanding of the perceived proportion of forms. 2. Represent from observation, three-dimensional forms in space. 3. Begin to demonstrate an understanding of the structure of forms. Examination Folio 100%, of which at least 20% will be assessed by mid-trimester. ART AND DESIGN THEORY A (MCD1280) This unit deals with several key concepts of art and design. Students will consider the historical time-line of style, the operation of visual elements and the mechanisms of design principles in order to build a formal critical analysis of the art and design object. Nil.

5 1. Compare and contrast the difference between material substance and representational meaning. 2. Distinguish the difference between different visual elements and how they can be employed for different functions. 3. Interpret how several visual elements have been employed within a work of art and their conceptual application and purpose. 4. Analyse works of art & design and demonstrate how their strengths and weaknesses are based on the principles of design. 5. Identify several major styles of art and design, and interpret how design principles underpin their stylistic characteristics. 6. Interpolate how diverse cultural and complex personal issues underpin the creative process and are constitutive to the production of works of art & design. 7. Demonstrate a capability of communicating a formal analysis of art and design in both written and spoken forms. Research task: 10% Essay 1: 25% (800 words) Essay 2: 35% (1400 words) Oral presentation: 10% Slide Test: 20% (The slide test may include multi-choice and short answer questions) BASIC DESIGN STUDIO B (MCD1290) This unit provides students with a foundation in three-dimensional design. It introduces students to the basic skills, processes, materials and equipment necessary to the practice of design. The unit comprises a series of theoretical and practical exercises. Projects and class exercises have been formulated to encourage the student to explore three-dimensional form in a confident and competent manner. Historical and contemporary examples of design will be examined, analyzed and discussed. This is achieved through research, lectures, demonstrations and practical application. MCD 1330 Basic Design Studio A

6 1. Recognise and analyse three-dimensional elements of design; 2. Recognise, analyse and use the physical principles of three-dimensional design; and, 3. Understand conceptual and representational principles of volumes and structures. Assignments: 100%. This unit consists of projects. Each of the assigned projects demands the implementation of various elements and principles of design. VISUAL ARTS STUDIO B (MCD1300) This unit is designed to, in conjunction with Unit A, facilitate a greater understanding of visual arts studio practice in 2D and 3D studies. MCD 1340 Visual Arts Studio A 1. Show an increased facility with painting, sculpting and printing processes; with particular regard to the use of colour, texture, collage, structure and drawing in 2D and 3D format. 2. Become familiar with art movements and demonstrate a greater understanding of the history of art language through practical application. Body of work - Painting: 33% Body of work - Sculpture: 33% Body of work - Printmaking: 33%

7 ART AND DESIGN THEORY B (MCD1320) This unit explores the relation between media and technology in art and design. Students will consider several key disciplines and be able to compare and contrast the employment of these technologies. MCD1280 Art and Design Theory A 1. Analyse how the history of art and design technologies corresponds with a history of diverse cultural platforms and ideologies. 2. Identify the regional development of materials and technologies in the evolution of various art and design disciplines. 3. Compare and contrast the different purposes of various media and relate these to different disciplinary objectives. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between technologies for art and design. 5. Determine how the dynamic between necessity and exchange value determines the development of and approaches to the employment of technology. 6. Interpolate how regional identity and historical concepts of progress underpin approaches to technology in contemporary art & design. 7. Demonstrate a capability of communicating soundly about art & design technologies in both written and spoken forms. Research task: 10% Essay 1: 25% (800 words) Essay 2: 35% (1400 words) Oral presentation: 10% Slide Test: 20% (The slide test may include multi-choice and short answer questions) BASIC DESIGN STUDIO C (MCD5010) This unit provides a non-discipline specific theoretical and practical foundation for subsequent discipline specific design studios.

8 MCD1290 Basic Design Studio B (For Part 2 entry students, Part 1 pre-requisites are not applicable). Must be studied with MCD5120 Introduction to Art and Design. At the completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Understand the nature of the design process and apply methodical steps in their own projects; 2. Demonstrate the ability to recognize, analyse and apply the elements and principles of design in simplistic design projects and exercises; 3. Understand the multidisciplinary nature of many design activities; 4. Understand spatial structures in nature, built forms and visual systems; 5. Develop capabilities to communicate design outcomes, design concepts and solutions; and 6. Appreciate the relationship between design, industry and art. Skills and capabilities are assessed through a series of exercises worth 20%. Three projects examine the students theoretical understanding and awareness of issues, through the production of artefacts, reports and oral presentations, 80%. DIGITAL IMAGING (MCD5030) To provide an introduction to digital media and processes for art and design activities. MCD1290 Basic Design Studio B (For Diploma of Art & Design only. For Part 2 entry students, Part 1 pre-requisites are not applicable). Must be studied with MCD5120 Introduction to Art and Design Health and Safety 1. Access College computing resources, including Internet and facilities; 2. Competently operate a personal computer, including operation system basics and file management; 3. Use a range of storage media and input devices, eg,, scanners, cameras; 4. Use image editing software to create, adapt, edit, manipulate and compose images; 5. Use output devices, eg. printers. 6. Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.

9 The unit will be assessed based on the production of a portfolio of creative work comprised of: A series of exercises used to evaluate the students ability to comprehend, retain and apply knowledge as well as practice, develop and apply skills, (40%); A creative art & design folio comprising responses to set projects (50%) that allow for greater personal expression and development than the minor exercises; and A Diary/Journal (10%) that documents the student s ongoing resourcing, development, exploration and understanding. DRAWING C (MCD5040) This unit is designed to extend previously acquired knowledge and skill in drawing. MCD1310 Drawing B (For Part 2 entry students, Part 1 pre-requisites are not applicable). Must be studied with MCD5120 Introduction to Art and Design Health and Safety On completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Successfully combine and exploit a variety of drawing materials. 2. Demonstrate some individuality and skills in the solution of set problems. Examination: Folio 100%, of which at least 20% will be assessed by mid-trimester. ART AND DESIGN THEORY C (MCD5020) This unit provides a survey of the important periods and styles of western art and design. It is intended to inculcate in students the values of diversity of visual expression, and an understanding of stylistic change, innovation and experimentation, as chief means of the growth in art and design. The growth of design disciplines in the 20th century, including graphic, industrial, and interior design will also be studied.

10 MCD1320 Art and Design Theory B (For Part 2 entry students, Part 1 pre-requisites are not applicable). Must study with MCD5120 Introduction to Art and Design Health and Safety and must be enrolled in 2 of the following units: MCD5010 Basic Design Studio C, MCD5030 Digital Imaging, MCD5040 Drawing C. 1. Show an understanding of the universality of contemporary visual culture and its historical precedents. 2. Identify and reasonably analyse the chief features of key works of art and design of the western tradition. 3. Demonstrate a grasp of style and stylistic change within the context of at least one culture. 4. Show a grasp of both representational (perceptual) and abstract (conceptual) aesthetics, and be able to discuss examples of both. 5. Relate works of art or design to the particular historical or modern School or Movement they belong to. 6. Relate the purposes and functions of art and design to contemporary life. 7. Demonstrate a capability of communicating soundly about art and design in both written and spoken forms. Assignment and class tests: 60% Test: 40% INTRODUCTION TO ART & DESIGN HEALTH & SAFETY (MCD5120) The unit provides an introduction to occupational health, safety and environmental training within the context of courses within Monash College and Monash University s Faculty of Art & Design, and will give students an understanding of the historical perspectives and context of safety and environment concerns in the workplace. The unit will show how safety and environmental guidelines come about due to government acts, regulations, codes of practice and standards, which are ultimately a reflection of broader community attitudes. Students will learn to know the difference between a hazard and a risk, and understand the process of risk assessment and be able to apply it to their workplace (and by extension to environments external to the university). In addition, students will have some understanding of the consequences of their work and study actions in relation to the environment. Must be enrolled in ALL of the following units: MCD5010 Basic Design Studio C MCD5020 Art and Design Theory C MCD5030 Digital Imaging MCD5040 Drawing C

11 By successfully completing this unit students will: have an understanding of the nature of health and safety in the workplace, community expectations, and the relevant legislation; be conversant with procedures for dealing with emergencies; have an understanding of the terms hazard, risk, risk assessment, and risk management, and an understanding of the procedures for assessing and managing risk; be able to identify the main types of hazard which may be encountered in studios and workshops, biological, chemical, and physical; have an understanding of the importance of controlling risk and how this is done. This unit is delivered via MUSO (Monash University Studies Online); therefore, students do not need to attend formal timetabled classes. However, students will need to go online to complete the requirements for this unit. The assessment for this unit is based entirely on the submitted answers students give to the 29 assessment questions. A PGO (Pass Grade Only) result must be received at the end of the trimester in order to pass this unit. Students must answer ALL the assessment questions. To PASS this unit, students must correctly answer 80% of the assessment questions. GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDIO (MCD5050) This unit introduces students to the basic skills, processes, materials and equipment necessary to the practice of graphic design, and image making. MCD5010 Basic Design Studio C

12 On completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Understand the basics of the visual language of graphic design and the application of design elements and principles; 2. Understand the design process and the role of graphic design as a means of visual communication; 3. Approach the problem-solving of two-dimensional design with an inquiring, adventurous and open attitude; 4. Know the correct use of design illustration and typography materials, processes and technical equipment; 5. Continue to develop and apply the principles of form, shape and composition; 6. Be able to identify the appropriate application of illustration in the commercial environment; 7. Understand typographical terminology and understand the historical development of type; 8. Have the skills to create images at a basic level and utilise them within a design environment; and identify appropriate research resources relevant to their study of design. Major projects folio: 70% Exercises: 30% PHOTOMEDIA IMAGING 1 (MCD5060) To provide a foundation unit in Photomedia. Any 2 units from the following: MCD5010 Basic Design Studio C MCD5020 Art and Design Theory C MCD5030 Digital Imaging MCD5040 Drawing C Learning Outcomes On completion of this unit, students will have: 1. A basic practical and critical understanding of photography and its links with other media; 2. A minimum level of competence and understanding of the operations associated with lens-based photography including the principles of photographic seeing and technical principles of image production (ie. use of light sensitive materials, exposure); 3. A basic understanding of photography as a visual language through working with photographic imagery as expressive, narrative and representational forms; 4. The foundation necessary to undertake further units in photomedia with a view towards either specialisation, integration or application of the media within other studio disciplines. 5. Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.

13 The unit will be assessed based on the production of a portfolio of creative work comprised of: A series of staff directed projects (30%) that place various demands upon the technical, expressive and conceptual skills of students; A self-directed thematic folio (50%), which targets specific individually-determined areas for study and exploration; and A Diary/Journal (20%) that documents the student s ongoing development, exploration and understanding. 3D DESIGN & VISUALISATION (MCD5100) To provide an introduction to 3D digital imaging and design processes. MCD5030 Digital Imaging At the completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. An understanding of the principles of designing objects and spaces in three dimensions and their translation into computer-based design methodologies; 2. Be able to use 3D imaging software to create environments and objects; 3. Be able to apply surface qualities, lighting, textures, and imported graphic files to elements in a three dimensional composition; 4. Explore the range of options and controls available through 3D imaging and modelling software applications; 5. Understand and manipulate camera properties and viewer perspectives; 6. Recognize the various applications of 3D design and visualisation across a range of multimedia, and digital arts practices. The unit will be assessed based on the production of a portfolio of creative work comprised of: A series of exercises used to evaluate the students ability to comprehend, retain and apply knowledge as well as practice, develop and apply skills, (40%); A creative art & design folio comprising responses to set projects (50%) that allow for greater personal expression and development than the minor exercises; and A Diary/Journal (10%) that documents the student s ongoing resourcing, development, exploration and understanding.

14 CREATING DIGITAL CONTENT (MCD5110) This unit will encompass the principles, developmental approaches and appropriate standards for Website development. It will develop the basic concepts of website authoring, from design to implementation. It will include the production of two websites: one a static site, with the other being database driven. It will also introduce W3C standards, usability, web ready contents, web design theory, and HTML coding. Particular attention will be paid to the issues of image readiness for web site use. MCD5030 Digital Imaging And any 1 unit from the following: MCD5010 Basic Design Studio C MCD5020 Art and Design Theory C MCD5040 Drawing C At the completion of this unit students will have a theoretical and conceptual understanding of: 1. The characteristics of commercial web sites and the authoring/management issues associated with them; 2. The features and applicability of a range of software tools which are used in the development of websites; 3. Internet standards and protocols, in particular the impact of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards in this area; 4. A web based document as an instance of the W3C Document Object Model; 5. Website usability issues; 6. The role that products such as Macromedia Flash can play in web authoring; 7. Copyright related issues as they apply to web authoring. At the completion of this unit students will have developed attitudes that enable them to: 8. Appreciate the flexibility required in dealing with clients in a variety of situations encountered in the tendering/authoring process; 9. Demonstrate a critical attitude towards assessing the success of websites; 10. Demonstrate a recognition of the strengths and weaknesses of information technology in the context of the development and use of web based multimedia systems. At the completion of this unit students will have the skills to: 11. 15 MULTIMEDIA & DIGITAL ARTS STUDIO A (MCD5090) This unit provide a foundation unit introducing students to the fundamental aspects of multimedia and digital arts practice. MCD5010 Basic Design Studio C MCD5030 Digital Imaging At the completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. Understand the language of multimedia and the application of art & design principles; 2. Understand the roles of multimedia designer and digital artist in electronic communication; 3. Have an understanding of the nature of multimedia elements, including text, image, sound, animation and video; 4. Be able to analyse digital media productions, and identify the various multimedia elements used; 5. Be able to use text and images as communication elements in digital publications and creative productions; 6. Approach the problem-solving of screen-based, interface design with an inquiring, adventurous and open attitude. 7. Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study. The unit will be assessed based on the production of a portfolio of creative work comprised of: A total of four projects (cumulatively totalling 80%), that focus on the development of the technical, artistic and conceptual skills of students across such areas as time-based design, interface design and interactivity. A Diary/Journal (20%) that documents the student s ongoing resourcing, development, exploration and understanding. TYPOGRAPHY 1 (MCD5070) Provides an introduction to typography suitable for further studies in visual communication and multimedia design.
