3 We offer a supportive and stimulating environment for those working towards higher professional education in Early Years and teacher training qualifications in the Further Education and Skills Sector. Our courses are vocationally led and combine theory and practice based studies, enabling students to develop the relevant skills and experience to enhance their professional knowledge and career progression. In addition to the wide range of in-service training programmes, the department provides quality work placements for those entering a career in teaching and for those on the BA (Hons) in Early Years, placements are an integral part of the programme. At College our students benefit from diverse learning groups and opportunities to share their experience and expertise with others from a wide range of backgrounds and work settings. The provision of technology assisted resources further enhances the learning experience. Our teaching staff are experienced practitioners from various subject specialist backgrounds, with a strong commitment to facilitating the development of all students. 4 Foundation Degree in Early Years This course covers a wide range of subjects within the childcare and education vocational area, including the psychology, sociology and philosophy of early childhood. Course Type Part-time Duration 3 years Course Code ZH2FDEYP01 Applications Direct to Colchester Institute An existing level 3 qualification which includes assessed practical competence. Those wishing to enter the teaching profession will also need GCSE (grades A*- C) in English, maths and a science. All applicants will be interviewed and required to demonstrate that they have relevant experience in working with children, and have good communication skills. They will also need to undertake a written piece as part of the interview. Mature students without formal qualifications, but with evidence of practical experience and relevant employment will also be considered for this course. Satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (completed through Colchester Institute). Who is this course for? This course is for people already working with children aged 0-8 years. It offers a broad base of subjects within childcare education and health. Mature students without formal qualifications, but with evidence of practical experience and employment in an early years setting will also be considered for this course. The first few years of children s lives are crucial to their development and opportunities in later life - and the adults who work with them are ideally placed to make a difference. This course will build on your knowledge of children s development and learning, as well as developing an understanding of policies and practice in early years settings. Some graduates enter social work, play therapy, health and civil services or support within schools and the community. There are other opportunities to apply for more senior positions within their current work setting and in Sure Start Children s Centres. After graduating with an Honours Degree and having undertaken teacher training, some students enter primary school teaching. Working in small classes really helped me engage with the course content. 4

It enables students to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of early years both through academic and practice based studies. Students also have the opportunity to undertake optional modules in areas of particular interest. Who is this course for? This course is for people interested in working with children aged 0-8 years. It offers a broad base of subjects within childcare education and health. For people who have caring responsibilities and/or work commitments, this course is also offered part-time, see page 12. The first few years of children s lives are crucial to their development and opportunities in later life - and the adults who work with them are ideally placed to make a difference. This course will build on students knowledge of children s development and learning, as well as developing an understanding of policies and practice in early years settings. 7 BA (Hons) in Music Education This programme provides a unique opportunity to study both music and music education. Who is this course for? This course is designed for musicians looking to develop a range of skills that will equip them for a career that emphasises teaching, giving graduates the potential to work on a freelance basis, within the schools sector, or to progress to further study at postgraduate level. Modules in performance, arranging, technology and creative musical skills are delivered alongside instrumental/vocal teaching, classroom teaching, music leadership and curriculum development. Delivery is through a combination of practical music, lectures, tutorials, seminars, placement, project work and personal study. Students will develop as both musicians and teachers through a clear understanding of their own learning along with musical and educational theory, observation and practice. The programme is highly vocational and maintains a clear relevance to current practice, pedagogy and political/social context. The course is open to instrumentalists, vocalists and composers, and welcomes students from a wide range of musical backgrounds (classical, pop, jazz, folk etc.). 8 Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector) Part-time This part-time initial teacher training programme provides a combination of theoretical and practicebased study and training, covering all the essential aspects of a full teacher role for practitioners in the Further Education and Skills Sector. Holders of this award may apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS)status which is conferred by the Institute for Learning (IfL). Course Type Part-time Duration 2 years Course Code ZT6CEEDPO1 Applications Direct to Colchester Institute Satisfactory interview, a level 3 specialist subject, or vocational qualification, a minimum of 100 hours of teaching or training in the post-compulsory sector, minimum level 2 qualifications in English (literacy) and maths (numeracy). Who is the course for? This part-time, two year in-service teacher training course is aimed at those working in a post-compulsory education or training role and is aimed at new or established teachers who need to gain a professional teaching qualification in the Further Education and Skills Sector (post-compulsory education and training). The course is designed to encourage students to achieve the aims through engaging in activities which are directly related to their own teaching context. Students are assessed through a mixture of essays, reports, assignments and practical tasks as appropriate for the learning outcomes of each individual module. Modules include: Year one Principles of Teaching and Supporting Learning Delivering and Supporting Learning Enabling Learning through Assessment Applying Theories and Principles for Effective Learning Year two Curriculum Development for Inclusive Practice Wider Professional Practice Action Research Project Continuing Personal and Professional Development All of our graduates are practising teachers. Previous trainees have gone on to study further specialist teaching qualifications and/or a degree in education. There are other opportunities to work in teaching and/or management in any post-compulsory educational setting. Coming onto this programme is a huge learning curve for me, but one which I am enjoying immensely. The course is giving me the support I need to really develop my teaching practice. 8

9 Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector) Full-time The full-time route is a one year, pre-service teacher training programme. Who is the course for? The full-time, pre-service, course is aimed at those applicants who wish to teach in the Further Education and Skills Sector (post-compulsory education). I have more experience and knowledge now because of the modules studied so far on the PGCE programme, which helps me to be more aware of all aspects of my teaching, including an understanding of learning theories and teaching and assessment methods. I feel I am becoming more creative in planning my sessions and am also concentrating on enhancing my own subject knowledge. 10

It is a professional training qualification leading to eligibility for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status for post-compulsory (Further Education and Skills Sector) teachers. Full-time trainees will undertake 100 hours of teaching practice in a lifelong learning setting provided by the College. The course is designed to encourage students to achieve the aims through engaging in activities which are directly related to their own teaching context. Students are assessed through a mixture of essays, reports, assignments and practical tasks as appropriate for the learning outcomes of each individual module. 12 Certificate of Continuing Education (Teaching Literacy and ESOL) This part-time course is a specialist qualification for adult literacy and ESOL teachers. The programme will help students to strengthen underpinning subject knowledge in their current professional practice and enhance career progression opportunities in Skills for Life areas. Course Type Part-time Duration 1 year Course Code ZT6CCEDP01 Applications Direct to Colchester Institute Cert Ed/PGCE and a level 3 qualification in English language, along with a minimum of 75 hours literacy teaching over the duration of the course. Specialist subject/vocational qualification at a minimum of level 3. Satisfactory interview. Who is the course for? This is an essential qualification for subject specialists and all teachers of basic and functional literacy who have qualified since The qualification is desirable for all teachers of literacy. This level 5 course helps trainees to develop a wider knowledge of literacy development and literacy/esol teaching. The programme covers topics such as literacy as situated social practice, learning difficulties related to literacy/esol development, and encourages exploration of current policy and practice. In addition, the development of a higher level of personal literacy skills is an important part of the course. Modules include: Literacy, ESOL and the Learners Literacy Theories and Frameworks Literacy Learning and Teaching Language and Literacy Teaching Investigation All of our graduates are practising teachers. Previous trainees have gone on to study undergraduate degrees, Master s Degrees and further specialist teaching qualifications. This course has helped me to really understand how I can help my learners develop their literacy, as well as giving me confidence in my ability as a literacy teacher. 12

13 Certificate of Continuing Education (Teaching Numeracy) This course is a specialist qualification for adult numeracy teachers. The programme will help students to strengthen underpinning subject knowledge in their current professional practice and enhance career progression opportunities in Skills for Life areas. Who is the course for? This is an essential qualification for subject specialists and all teachers of basic and functional numeracy who have qualified since The qualification is highly recommended for all teachers of numeracy. This level 5 course helps trainees to develop a wider knowledge of numeracy development and numeracy teaching. The programme covers topics such as numeracy as situated social practice, learning difficulties related to numeracy development, and encourages exploration of current policy and practice. In addition, the development of a higher level of personal numeracy skills is an important part of the course. 14 Applying to UCAS Applications Customer Services department The Admissions team within our Customer Services department is available on (01206) to help you make an application or discuss entry or course requirements. Applying for a place All applications for entry to Colchester Institute full-time higher education courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The UCAS code is shown next to the course details. Direct applications You may apply directly to Colchester Institute using one of our own application forms ONLY IF: (a) it is your intention to study part-time or (b) you are currently undertaking a full-time degree at Colchester Institute and wish to transfer internally to another degree or (c) you are applying for postgraduate study. UCAS will receive applications for entry in 2015 from 1st September You are advised to apply as soon as possible and preferably before the first UCAS deadline of 15th January Art and Design courses at Colchester Institute have a deadline of 24th March Colchester Institute will usually consider late applications received after the appropriate deadline and 30th June 2015 and through Clearing if places remain available. Deferred entry Colchester Institute accepts applications for students looking to defer entry until September 2016 for all courses. 15 CAREER GUIDANCE WELFARE UCAS application fee The application fee for 2015 was not available CLASSROOM at the time of going to print. The fee for 2014 was 23 for a multiple LEARNING application and 12 for a SUPPORT single choice. To confirm the application fees for 2015 please visit the UCAS website for more information. Employed applicants If you are to be sponsored by your employer to study on a course with a UCAS code, you must apply through UCAS. Telephone Fees INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT PLANNING Major Government reforms to student finance commenced in resulting in universities and colleges being able to charge variable fees. Universities and colleges that want to charge more than the basic fee (level not yet set for ) must provide additional support to promote access to disadvantaged students. At the time of printing, Colchester Institute had not set course fees and support levels for Once we have done so, we will update the fees pages on our website. We therefore recommend you consult our website for this information before you submit your UCAS application for entry to study in autumn These changes apply to UK and EU students wishing to study higher education in England. Student Loans and Grants FINANCE How much money will I need and how do I get it? Budgeting for student life is a tricky thing. The key is to be aware of the student loans and grants that are available to you, and to make sure you apply for them in good time. These can include Tuition Fee Loans, Maintenance Loans and Grants, and Disabled Students Allowance. For part-time courses, applications open in August. Is there any other money I can get? As well as student loans and grants, some students may be eligible for financial support through Access to Learning Funds which provides discretionary support to certain categories of student.
