Photographer News photographer Still photographer Photographer s Assistant LENGTH OF COURSE: 1 year HOURS: 180 ARTICULATION: Butte College COURSE DESCRIPTION Photography, as a nonverbal language, allows students to increase their visual perception and provides a medium for creative expression. The history of photography will be evaluated in the context of historical, social, cultural and artistic developments. Students learn to understand the artistic qualities of the photographic medium while acquiring the techniques for utilizing photography for expressive purposes. Instruction includes studio and field techniques, photojournalism, fashion photography, and commercial, portrait, scientific, nature, wildlife and sports photography. In producing their own works and by studying the photographs of others, students will develop a base for making informed aesthetic judgments. Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards which include basic academic skills, communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving, workplace safety, and technology and employment literacy. I. PROGRAM GOALS The goal of the program is to develop students academic and technical skills so they will be prepared for employment and postsecondary education, and able to do one or more of the following: Secure employment Upgrade present skills Enter advanced career training Pursue college related courses Butte Co ROP Digital Photography Page 1 of 7

STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES Course Goals and/or Major Student Outcomes Students will learn to: Perceive and understand photography as an art form, using the vocabulary of design principles and visual art elements to describe and discuss their own and others work. Understand the role of photography in reflecting past and contemporary cultures. Understand the role photography plays in communications and its use as a visual language. Critique orally or in writing the effectiveness of photographs in terms of artistic value and communication of meaning. Understand how the critical thinking, creativity, resource and time management skills learned in this course apply to other arts and to other career areas. Use technology as a tool to create individual works of photographic art. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, the student will: Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of photographic composition and development of a photographic eye. Demonstrate knowledge of the history of photography. Demonstrate competency using cameras and equipment (digital or darkroom). Demonstrate competency using basic studio lighting. Synthesize the technical and artistic aspects of the course. Show an appreciation and application of aesthetic factors in photography. Compile a portfolio, including an artist s statement and a selection of the student s best prints, suitable for employment or college applications. Participate in community opportunities for exhibition and competition. Standards for the Regional Occupational Program have been developed from curriculum frameworks, academic standards, model practice documents, and industry skill standards provided by business advisory committees. III. Students perceive and respond to works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. They use the vocabulary unique to the visual arts to express their observations.] 1. Characteristics/operation of cameras (digital or single lens reflex) b. Use of correct exposure c. Function and characteristics of shutter speeds d. Function and characteristics of aperture e. Function of wide, normal, telephoto, and special lenses 3. Light and Photography a. Technical and aesthetic aspects of light b. Correct exposures in a variety of lighting conditions c. Lighting in special circumstances C. CREATIVE EXPRESSION 40 [Standard 2.0 Creative Expression: Creating, Performing and Participating in the Visual Arts. Students analyze, assess, and derive meaning from works of art, including their own, according to the elements of art, principle of design, and aesthetic qualities.] 1. Portfolio Development a. Students apply what they learned in visual arts across subject areas. They develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication, and management of time and resources, which contribute to lifelong learning and career skills. KEY ASSIGNMENTS Produce photographs on the following topics: o Light and mood o Shadows o Time and motion o Strong emotion o Selective focus o Self-portrait o Community o Portrait with environment or props o Line o Earth Day o Studio lighting o Faces o Experimental Write term paper on American photographer ( words) o Explain photographer s background, education and experience o Describe style, use of art elements and design principles o Discuss contributions to the development of photography o Include student s response to the photographs Additional hours for Career Preparation Standards are integrated into instruction in content area standards. V. CAREER PREPARATION STANDARDS (Adapted from standards prepared by the California Association of Regional Occupational Centers and Programs, 2000) Standard 1: Personal Skills Students will understand how personal skill development affects their employability. This skill includes positive attitudes, self-confidence, honesty, responsibility, initiative, self-discipline, time management, and the capacity for lifelong learning. Standard 2: Interpersonal Skills Students will understand key concepts on group dynamics, conflict resolution, and negotiation. This skill includes the ability to work cooperatively, accept supervision, assume leadership roles, and show respect for others. This standard includes an appreciation of cultural diversity in the workplace. Standard 3: Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills Students will exhibit critical and creative thinking skills, logical reasoning, and problem-solving. These skills include applying basic skills in order to calculate, estimate, measure; identify, locate, and organize information/data; interpret and follow directions from manuals and other sources; analyze and evaluate information and solutions. 6 VI. VII. Standard 4: Communication Skills Students will understand principles of effective communication. This standard includes effective oral and written communication, listening skills, following and giving directions, requesting and giving information, asking questions. Standard 5: Occupational Safety Students will understand occupational safety issues, including the avoidance of physical hazards in the work environment. This includes the safe operation of equipment, avoidance of physical injuries, interpretation of warning and hazard signs and terminology, and following and understanding safety-related directions. Standard 6: Employment Literacy Students will understand career paths and strategies for obtaining employment within their chosen field. This includes traditional job preparation skills, such as resumés, application forms, cover letters, sources of employment information, and interviewing skills, but also includes an overview of the industry and an understanding of labor market trends. It should also include an understanding of the importance of basic skills to the field and options for further training. Students should learn to develop a portfolio and should take responsibility for further professional growth. Standard 7: Technology Literacy Students will understand and adapt to changing technology by identifying, learning, and applying new skills to improve job performance. Students should understand the role of technology in their chosen field and should be able to use all appropriate technology. Students should also feel confident in their ability to learn new technology by generalizing from what they know, adapting skills to new situations, and identifying and using sources of information and of further learning. METHODS, STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES Instructional Methods and/or Strategies A variety of strategies and techniques are used to instruct the students. These include the following: Cooperative learning Current textbooks and technology Demonstrations and hand-on experience Field trips to portrait studio, photo gallery, photo exhibits and local points of interest Group instruction Speakers ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE Assessment of student performance will include, but will not be limited to: Photography/Portfolio Projects 70% Classroom participation, punctuality and attendance 15% Tests and quizzes 15% Percentage Butte Co ROP Digital Photography Page 6 of 7

ROP CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS To earn ROP certification for this course, the student must accomplish the following: Complete student performance objectives Maintain a 90% attendance rate Demonstrate a positive work attitude ASSESSED JOB MARKET NEEDS According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of photographers is expected to grow about as fast as the average of all occupations through the year The growing use of visual images in education, communication, entertainment, marketing, research and development, and other areas should spur demand for photographers. Population growth should contribute to the increased demand for portrait photographers. X.
