2 The Langara College Photography Certificate Program is one of, if not, the largest and most comprehensive part time programs for training commercial photographers in Canada. This program is designed to accommodate those new to photography, passionate hobbyists and individuals pursuing photography as a career. Langara houses the top photographic facilities of any school in Western Canada; this includes both the top digital and the top traditional film facilities. The structure of the program allows our students to take on as many or as few courses they feel comfortable with, allowing them to customize and maximize their time with us. We encourage collaboration between the photography students and the students of the other applied arts programs. We find this inspires students to experiment, collaborate and creates an overall great learning atmosphere. In fact, we are so dedicated to your education with us, that the entire program will become free to you, for the rest of your life, once you have gained certification. 3 HOW THIS PROGRAMworks Every student can customize this program to fit their individual needs and wants for learning the art of photography. For those who are new to photography, or hobbyists who wish to hone their skills, we offer many great courses to choose from. For those wishing to pursue photography as a career, this is one of the most recognized programs in Canada and many of the top professional photographers in Canada have studied at Langara. If you wish to finish through to certification, then you must take or challenge all of the required courses as well as four courses from both the group 1 & group 2 elective courses (please see our PDF program guide at cs/photography). Students with previous experience or training may be able to challenge certain required level courses by calling the Program Coordinator - Greg Blue at Often, we find individuals begin the program to take one or two courses and then along the way choose to go for certification. For those planning to pursue certification, graduation is based on your portfolio, which the college sends out to top commercial clients, such as creative directors, senior art directors, designers and photo-editors for judging. 4 Program Philosophy The Photography Certificate Program operates on a number of very unique philosophies and practices. We believe that a program and its resources should be available to students for as long as they are needed. Often, other photography schools and programs will work on a short and unrealistic time frame for students to complete their programs, this is not our thinking. We believe it is our responsibility to create an environment where students have the time, instruction and resource available to truly excel at the art of photography. It is for this reason we developed the concept of free education. All students who gain certification with us qualify to take any course in the Photography Program for free. Forever. No strings attached. That means you can come back as many times, as often as you want and retake any course to update your skills - and all those elective courses you chose not to take? Now you can take them - absolutely free. This program works closely with several other programs in the Applied Arts Division, allowing for real-world collaboration among students. There are very strong bonds between this program and the Advertising & Graphic Design Program at Langara (www. langara.bc.ca/cs/programs/adgr.html). Art directors and commercial photographers work together in the real world, so it only makes sense that they work together in the academic world. These are the people that will be contracting and hiring you once you are a commercial photographer. Not only are you collaborating with future art directors and designers, but you are also being taught by some of the top commercial photographers in the industry. Our curriculum is less academically driven and more vocationally driven. This means there are a several differences in the structure and delivery of information. First, it makes the program very easy to tailor to your own professional and artistic goals. Where many full time programs have few or no elective courses, the Certificate Photography Program has over 30 elective courses, covering the professional and artistic gamut of the industry. Another key advantage to this program is our teaching staff. The program has over 20 instructors who not only make their living as professional photographers, but also represent some of the top talent in the commercial, portraiture and photojournalistic industries and having won numerous top industry awards. Develop a solid foundation in basic photographic concepts: exposure control & depth of field. B&W processing and printing techniques are also covered. Covering traditional aspects such as exposure & depth-of-field, the course delves into digital controls such as white balance, histograms and workflow. Students learn methods of enhancing and working with high resolution images. Learn basic studio lighting techniques, and working with available light. Gain experience through shooting sessions using professional models. This course covers equipment selection and lighting techniques with an emphasis on practical sessions in and out of the studio. 6 Advanced Studio Lighting Expand upon the experience gained in Practical Lighting with lectures, demonstrations, student shooting sessions, and an intensive, in-depth look at photographic lighting. Experiment with unconventional techniques and the manipulation of sunlight in relation to a variety of subjects including people, still life, editorial. $475 Prerequisites: Practical Lighting or equivalent. Emphasis is on quoting and estimating, ethical business practices, copyright issues and legalities, permits, licenses, GST and PST, NAFTA, photographic associations, accounting and financial planning. $424 Prerequisites: none. The content favours a fineart approach but is still very relevant to stylistically driven commercial photography. Emphasis is on printing from a master negative - students will learn about the colour wheel, filters, film & paper, processing, spotting with extensive hands-on in our colour lab. $460 Prerequisites: Basic Darkroom or equivalent (60263) 12 eve - Tu May 6, (Balderston) Photographic Portrait Explore portraiture within the realms of several photographic applications: classic (traditional); commercial (editorial & advertising) and fine art (interpretive & abstract). Learn how to interpret and produce layouts as well as the working partnership between photographer and art director. Students will develop their skills through lectures, visual presentations and handson field trips. Become confident with the mechanics of a 4X5 camera, its operation, applications and special effects capabilities. (60397) 12 eve - Th May 8, (Stacey) FREE DSLR and Adobe Seminars An all-day free seminar for people who are using a DSLR (Digital SLR) camera for the first time. Also an all-day seminar on the inter-connectivity of Adobe Photoshop and InDesign shown through a fashion shoot and magazine spread. These seminars are open to everyone, you do not have to be a student in the program to take it.
