2 Dear Madison Families, I would like to start with a HUGE thank you to all students, parents, teachers, and staff that made our Annual Science Fair another tremendous success. Year after year we see incredible work by our amazing students. We extend a very special thank you to PTA Member Kristie Chevalier, Mr. Genenbacher, and Mrs. Stegeman for doing all of the legwork that makes this amazing event possible. Be ready for our annual spring Madison School Discount Card Fundraiser which kicks off on March 27 th. We re working on the cards to keep the great deals we love and hopeful for some new and exciting offers for our families and friends to enjoy! Our fundraisers are what keep our great PTA going strong. Without your support it would not be possible for our students to get theatre lessons from Quincy Community Theatre, end the year with our incredible carnival, take field trips, enjoy events like Literacy Night or special guest speakers like Mad Science of St. Louis, and so much more. As we near the end of the academic year, our PTA will be working on a Nominating Committee to present a new slate of officers for the year. If you re interested in an executive position with the PTA, now is your chance to learn more! I have confidence and excitement for the amazing board members that will move up into new positions next year. They will need your help and support as they prepare for another wonderful Madison year! I hope that you will consider getting involved with this incredible group of parents. March 27 th is Third Grade Living History Museum. For those who are unfamiliar with this unique and exciting event; each third grader is dressed as a special historical figure of their choosing, speaks as this person, and shares a snippet of their life and work with those who travel through the museum. This is as much fun for parents as it is for children and ALL Madison parents are invited to visit. The younger grades will pass through the museum at some point during the day with their classrooms. It s incredibly special to see how the younger grades enjoy the amazing and hard work of the third grade class! Don t miss your chance to visit. The next meeting is March 18 th at 9:00 a.m. in the Computer Lab. Hope to see you there! Raquel Piazza Madison PTA President Our Monthly Meetings are the perfect time to hear about what is happening at the school and sign up to volunteer. Younger siblings are welcome to tag along. The PTA sponsors many events throughout the year at Madison, including guest speakers & school visitors, field trips, cultural events, book giveaways, family events, school pictures, staff appreciation, and so much more. This is not possible without your wonderful support and our many volunteers. We have several volunteer opportunities that range from one hour to several days, during school and after school, in and out of the school. We re always looking for more help, so let us know if you would like to get involved! Just send a note with your child to school addressed to Madison PTA.

3 Welcome to March, Student respect challenge: Our students have completed their respect challenge in the classroom. The students were striving to demonstrate respect to their teachers and peers each day over the 13 day challenge. Each classroom chose a celebration for the students achieving their respect goals. Those not reaching their goals had an opportunity to take part in some PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) re-teaching lessons. Cool 2b kind bracelet challenge. We have teamed up with State Farm, Hyvee, and Pepsi to promote kindness. Student initiated and noticed acts of kindness are noticed and rewarded with the privilege of wearing the kindness bracelet. Students write their names on the banner and search out another student showing kind deeds and then pass the bracelet. PARCC testing for third graders. Our third grade students will take the PBA (Performance Based Assessments) this month. They are scheduled over a two week period beginning Tuesday, March 10 th. Classrooms will be testing at different times as we are now testing on laptop computers. Good Luck third graders. We are certain you will do a fabulous job of attempting to answer each problem. Science fair success. Well Done! Thanks to all Mr. Genenbacher, Mrs. Stegeman, Kristie Chevalier, all judges, families and students for their participation in the science fair. What a great turnout and awesome exhibit we turned out. 1st grade music program Monday night. Thanks to all first grade teachers (Mrs. Merrill, Mrs. Million. Ms. Pigman, Mrs. Smith) and Mr. Wunderlich for planning and practicing for a terrific show titled How Does Your Garden Groove. What an outstanding show and fan support from all the first grade families. Blue Devil night at QHS. Thanks to everyone who supported the Madison Night at Blue Devil Gym for the QHS Boys Basketball game. We received many compliments on the STAR behavior of Madison students and families. Way to Go!! 3 rd Grade Living History Change: I do apologize, but due to our PARCC testing we have been forced to change the living history museum to Friday March 27. We apologize for the inconvenience! Mr. Sohn Madison School Principal

4 Our PE classroom has been a busy and active environment this past month! We have had several guests to our gym including the Blue Devil basketball team and local community members teaching the Heptathlon of Healthy Habits sponsored by the Quincy Medical Group. The Blue Devil players came in to talk about the importance of respect, while QMG has been reinforcing healthy eating and exercise habits and the importance of treating others the way you would like to be treated. We have also had the opportunity to incorporate the use of our projector into the curriculum to provide your child with another means of getting the exercise they need. Have a great March and stay active! Chris Harmann Madison School Physical Education Children should NOT return to school until they are free of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for 24 hours. Fever-free means no fever and not taking any fever-reducing medication such as Tylenol or Motrin for 24 hours. For pink eye & strep throat, children must be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school. Remember to WASH YOUR HANDS to prevent the spread of germs, as well as COVERing YOUR COUGH and sneeze!! All First graders had their heads measured for a free bicycle helmet which they will receive in the Spring courtesy of Safe Kids of Adams County and Kohls Care program. All grade levels are in the process of receiving Colgate dental kits and information after I teach oral hygiene in their classroom. Hopefully, you will see an improvement in their brushing! Name: Child Name: Teacher: Please enclose your dues and return to school in envelope marked PTA. Your membership card will be returned to you. Thank you for helping us reach 200 members! Please continue to trim and send your labels to Madison School. We collect labels all year long! Please take some time to look below and educate yourself on the labels that we collect. We have made a slight change in our label collecting program. This year we are collecting Box Tops, Hy-Vee UPC s (beginning with 75450), and Tyson Project A+. If your class collects 2000 labels by March 1st, they will earn a pajama movie party. If they collect 3000 labels by March 1st, then they will earn a pizza party. Class totals are as follows: Blattner: 608 Mettemeyer: 496 Struck: 415 Vollrath: 92 Merrill: 1,689 Million: 897 Pigman: 868 Smith: 1,405 Cain: 326 Phillips: 1,032 Stegaman: 202 Stroot: 436 Westerman: 158 for properly trimming Box Tops and checking the expiration date. for taking the time to sort labels by type into plastic bags or envelopes. for writing your child s name and his/her teacher s name on the outside. for sending to school by March 1, Send each week or all at once! It only takes a little time to save these labels and it makes a HUGE difference for our school. If every child at Madison School brought in just 100 box tops this year, we would have almost $4,000 for our school to spend. WOW! Ask your family and friends to help you collect. Please contact me at venvertloh2009@yahoo.com if you have questions. Aeilts: 870 Biswell: 544 Genenbacher: 312 Williams: 1,149 HyVee Brand UPCs beginning with Participating Product Lists: Due to changes in the program, we no longer collect Campbell s Labels. What is the 500 Club? Each child that turns in 500 labels in the fall earns a McDonald s Picnic Lunch in the Park with Mr. Sohn! These labels must be saved and turned in at one time. If this is your goal, please keep your labels at home and turn them at the beginning of the School Year. Please note: Campbell s Labels for Education will not count toward your total.
