1 January 2016 Dear 12th Street Families, Welcome back to school and Happy 2016! Students are having a great first day back today. Teachers are digging into the learning and reviewing our PAWS - Practice Kindness, Act Respectfully, Work Responsibly, Safety - behavior expectations all week this week. With the cold temperatures we are monitoring the weather and will stay in for recess whenever the temperature is at or below zero degrees. On days above zero, students will go out to the playground for recess, so continue to make sure they have all of their snow gear each day. As we reteach student expectations, it s a good time to review some of our safety and traffic procedures for everyone. Especially as we get through slick, wintry driving conditions patience and routine will serve us all well and keep everyone safe. When dropping off or picking up your child at school use the lane closest to the building, pull as far forward as possible, stop at the curb, have your child exit the vehicle on the passenger side of the car - adjacent to the sidewalk. When leaving the drop off lane: use your turn signal and check the outer lane carefully for through traffic before you merge. If everyone is patient and alert, we can have a safe flow for everyone. This is always crucial and takes on added urgency during the snowy days now and ahead. Thanks for your cooperation in keeping everyone safe and calm as we come and go at school. Should you wish to join me and other staff members in helping to greet students and direct traffic, let me or PTO know and we ll welcome you to volunteer. Let s show our children that we can practice PAWS in all settings at 12th Street! Later this month we will be completing our mid-year screenings for reading and math progress with each student. Sometime in February we will share our building data with you and from the moment we know results, teachers and staff will be working together to plan for student instruction. We look forward to seeing the growth everyone has made as we continue to plan for every student s success. Let me know anytime you have a question, concern or compliment to share, January S. 12th St. Portage, MI Phone Fax School Hours 8:20am 1st bell 8:25am 2nd bell After 8:30am tardy 3:38pm dismissal 11:40am 1/2-day dismissal Beth Hartman Principal Melanie Sage Administrative Assistant Warmly, Beth Hartman, principal

2 Notes from the Office CALLING ALL INCOMING KINDERGARTNERS! It s Kindergarten Registration Time If you have a child that turns 5 on or before September 1, 2016, please call the office at to register for Kindergarten. We will have a parent meeting in early March and ask that you register your child in advance of the parent meeting. Once you register, a packet of information will be sent to you, including documents needed for fall enrollment. Information about Kindergarten screening will be given at the parent meeting. Winter Weather / Outdoor Recess Outdoor Recess Reminder: Our policy for outdoor recess is if the temperature (actual or with wind-chill) is 1 degree or above, the children DO go outside for recess. We use to determine what the wind chill and actual temperature is. Please plan for outdoor recess EVERY day. We keep the kids safety upmost in mind, but we also encourage outdoor play as the kids need that time to burn off extra energy and give their minds a "kick start" again. If in doubt, plan for outdoor recess. It is better to be prepared and not need the extra winter gear, then need it and not have it. We do have some extra things in the office, but can't guarantee that we'll have enough for everyone. Thank you! NO SCHOOL JANUARY 29 (Records Day) Attention 5th Grader Parents! Dear Parents of PPS 5th Grade students, We would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to your child s respective middle school for the academic year. This year s 5th grade parent night is from 7 to 8pm on Wednesday, February 3rd for all 3 middle schools. We will meet for an exchange of information. Topics include the scheduling process, course offerings, academic decisions to be made, and behavior expectations. It is designed for parents as we have student orientations planned for incoming sixth graders this spring and again in late August. What Middle School am I districted to? If you are unsure of what middle school (or even high school) you are districted to, you can look that information u p online. Visit Portage s main website and the Street Guide is listed under the Transportation Department. ion/routes/streetguide_ pdf Upcoming February Conferences Winter conferences will be held on Tuesday, February 16 and Thursday, February 18. Please be watching for information coming home on how to sign-up online for your conference time. Anyone who does not schedule their conference online during the allotted time frame will be scheduled a conference as the teacher has space available. If you have any questions regarding this event, please feel free to call your neighborhood s middle school building at the following numbers: CMS NMS WMS Sincerely yours, PPS Middle School Staff 1/15 Popcorn Friday 1/18 Hungry Howie s Restaurant Fundraiser 1/19 2nd Grade Music 6:30pm 1/21 Student Council 7:45am 1/21 PTO 11:30pm in 1st Floor Media Center 1/29 No School (Records Day) Page 2

3 Notes from the Office Forgotten Items From Home Parents, please help your children remember to bring all needed items for school with them before they leave for the day. It may be helpful to pack everything up the night before. If your child does forget something and you drop it off at school, we ask that you leave it in the office and we will either call or the teacher and let them know the item is in the office. Medication Distribution at School Authorization Required Whenever possible, we encourage parents/ guardians to administer medication to children at home. Please check with your child s physician if prescribed medication can be given outside the school day, thereby eliminating the bringing of medication to school. Written consent and instruction from a licensed practitioner and a parent/guardian is required for any type of medication (prescribed and over-the-counter) to be administered at school. Authorization/Consent must be given on a Portage Public Schools Medication Prescriber/Parent Authorization Form. All medication must be brought to school in the original container with the child s name, drug and dosage, time and quantity to be given and physician's name and duration of treatment on the container s label. An adult must drop off the medication to the office so that we can verify the quantity. We will not accept medication from a child. ILLNESSES As a reminder of school policy on illnesses If your child has been running a fever and/or vomiting, we ask that you wait 24 hours without the use of medication before sending your child back to school. This helps to ensure that your child is 100% better and will not continue to spread the germs to other students and staff. Even if they seem to be feeling better, we appreciate taking that little extra time to recover. Also, unless we have a written doctor s note, we can not keep children in from recess or gym for cold or illness related requests. Please remind your child to wash their hands well and to cough / sneeze into their elbow or Kleenex to help avoid spreading germs. Thank you for understanding and for helping to keep our school as healthy as possible! COUNT DAY Count Day will be Wednesday, Feb 10. Please be sure your child is present at school on this day if at all possible. Please try not to schedule appointments on this day if possible. If your child has to be gone for any part of this day, we will need a written note stating why. We are required by law to have written notes on Count Day for any absences. Thank you for your assistance. Bus Passes Reminder: We can not give bus passes for bus #33, #39, and #40. These busses are at capacity and can not take any extra children. Skyward Family Access Portal We are utilizing Skyward more as our primary means of communication with parents in regard to school events. Skyward is also how the district communicates to parents things like upcoming district events, and snow days. Please ensure that your address is up-to-date in our system so that you can receive these important communications. It is where our online school directory is located, as well as where you can find your child s student id, make phone number changes, and add/delete emergency contacts. If you need access to Skyward, please contact the office and we can verify that we have the correct on file and send you a link to access Skyward. Page 3
