1 Student Accident Insurance Park Hill School District annually offers parents/ guardians the opportunity to enroll their child/children in a low cost insurance program. As per Board of Education policy JHA, The Park Hill Board of Education recommends that all students have accident insurance for both their own and their parents / guardians protection. Although arranging for such insurance is the responsibility of the student and parents/ guardians, the Board will name an insurance carrier each year to offer group rates. Participation in the group plan is optional. Parents/ guardians and students will deal directly with the insurance carrier. The District is offering coverage through Kidguard Insurance. A copy of the enrollment form is attached to this . Developing a child s work ethic is the most critical component to raising successful children. Whether it is success in school or in life, research indicates that intelligence and ability are simply not as important as a person s level of effort. In The Secrets to Raising Smart Children, Carol S. Dweck summarizes 30 years of research on what makes children successful. Surprisingly, one of the first things she notes contradicts a common parental practice. The mistake? Too many parents tell their kids that they are smart. Dweck insists that praising children s abilities (smartness) reinforces an overemphasis on intellect and talent. Instead of praising ability, the focus should be on praising effort. When well meaning parents and educators praise a child for how smart they are rather than their effort, children believe their success is something they are born with. For these children, mistakes are hard to handle and challenging tasks are often avoided for fear of failure. However, children who are praised for how hard they work or their effort show greater persistence, a willingness to try new things, resilience when things get tough and life-long success. What can parents do? Get in the habit of praising your child s efforts. Wow, you must have worked really hard on this project! Get your child involved in youth sports. Coaches often help children focus on effort rather than just results. Share stories about how hard work helped you achieve a goal in your life. Share stories of famous athletes or musicians who put in countless hours of practice (effort) to succeed in their field. Let your child work through challenges or obstacles to increase their resiliency. Ultimately, according to the research, hard work and discipline contribute more to school success than IQ or ability. This is true for success in life as well. Focus your praise on effort and hard work and your student is sure to have a successful school year! On Tuesday, October 27 th Line Creek will kick off its One School, One Book program. PTA is providing every family with a copy of Charlotte s Web to read at home. Additionally, teachers and students will read the book together at school. A calendar will be sent home with each weeks reading assignments. Every week on the announcements there will be trivia questions for students to answer for the opportunity to win prizes. Reading this book as an entire school community should be fun experience for everyone. Look for more information to come in classroom newsletters.

2 Prevailing research indicates to no one s surprise that the more time students spend in the classroom, the more they learn. Every minute away from the classroom has a negative impact on student achievement. In addition, good attendance and punctuality are important life skills that will help your child in the future. The Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP), the state s accountability system for school districts, has set forth new standards regarding attendance that we want you to be aware of. Attendance expectations and guidelines will now be based on individual students versus school buildings. This change encourages schools to look at the attendance of every individual student instead of letting some student s perfect attendance cover up students who are missing a lot of school. The new MSIP attendance expectation is as follows: 90% of the students are in attendance 90% of the time. The Park Hill School District attendance expectation is as follows: A student is in attendance 95% of the time. How can you help your student maintain at least a 95% attendance rating? Facilitate conversations with your student about the importance of school attendance. Help your student maintain daily routines including eating healthy and getting a good night s sleep. Make doctor s appointments after school hours. Schedule vacations in the summer or during scheduled days off. What can you expect from the new attendance expectation? Ongoing conversations with you and your student about the importance of attendance. The implementation of reinforcements and/or a support plan if your student s attendance isn t meeting the district standard. We want to thank you for your commitment to the students at Line Creek Elementary. Together, we can and will, equip our students with the academic, social, and life skills necessary to enjoy success in life. Please contact us if you have questions. Marla Anderson, MSW School Social Worker After-School Chats What s in your backpack? Greet your child with this question, and you ll discover a lot about what she does in class. Set aside time each day to go through her papers. Try to do it first thing after school when her day is fresh in her mind. Look over your child's work together. Help her feel proud by making a specific comment about something she s done. For instance, if she shows you a picture she drew in art class, you might say, The gray sky and big waves look just like our rainy day at the beach. Have her talk through math problems or science experiments to show you what she s learned. She might explain how she finds the perimeter of a triangle or why ants dig tunnels, for example. Early Release Days October 8, 2015 November 12, 2015 December 10, 2015 January 14, 2016 February 11, 2016 March 10, 2016 April 14, 2016 May 12, 2016 Park Hill Elementary schools will be dismissed at 1:30 on each of these days.

3 Each new school year brings opportunities for academic growth and growth in all areas of development. Although children must be knowledgeable when they graduate, they must also be healthy, engaged, responsible, and caring people. The Leader in Me provides Line Creek with the vision and language to lead our school in a way that addresses all areas of development. As each child discovers and develops his or her unique gifts and talents, they are given opportunities to lead. As leaders, they become active, engaged partners in their own education and their self-confidence, responsibility, and initiative grows. The children quickly understand the benefits of different gifts and talents; they learn to listen to new ideas, work together to achieve results, and motivate one another to be the best. We hope you enjoy sharing these new opportunities. Together, we will watch each and every child grow throughout the year.

4 Please mark your calendars for Parent-Teacher conferences. These will take place on Wednesday, October 28 from 5:00-8:00pm and on Thursday, October 29, from noon to 8:00pm. Parent Teacher Conferences provide a great opportunity for you and your child s teacher to share information and insights into your child s academic and social growth. Because conference times are brief, plan ahead for a great conference. Before the conference: Review your child s work. Look for patterns. Is your child needing to redo work frequently? Do they have talent in math? Is work completed at a quality level? Talk to your child. Ask your child what she/he thinks are strengths and weaknesses. What goals has your child set for the year? Prepare a list of questions to ask during the conference. Remember, the time is brief so prioritize your questions. Plan to arrive on time. If you ve forgotten your conference time, contact your child s teacher or the school office. During the conference: Listen. Remember, the teacher s job is to provide insights and feedback into how your child learns as well as social development. Share your concerns, hopes for your child, and willingness to do whatever s necessary to help your child succeed. Ask the questions you prepared in advance. Your questions will help the teacher better understand your concerns or build upon strengths. After the conference: Follow up with your child. Let them know that you are working with the teacher to support their success. Follow up with the classroom teacher if you have any additional questions or concerns. If you need to schedule a parent-teacher conference, please contact your child s teacher or call the school office. ( ) Our goal is to meet with 100% of parents during conferences. With your help, we will meet this goal! Thank you for the important role you play in helping your child meet with success.
