1 Principally Speaking: November, 2014 I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the beautiful fall weather that we ve been enjoying lately. The temperatures are getting cooler, the days are shorter, and the leaves are starting to fall. We just finished our annual Storybook Parade and the excitement of Halloween was in the air on Friday afternoon. Looking forward to the month of November, we are excited for our annual Chisholm/ Thunder Night and Turkey Bingo along with numerous classroom activities that correlate to this month. I m happy to announce that the construction on the west playground is nearing completion, and we hope to have it released for use the first week of November. The frustration of not having access to it will soon disappear once our students begin exploring this new playground area. I would also like to announce that Chisholm students will soon have access to an ipad cart that was purchased with a district technology grant. We are currently finishing up the installation process and trying to configure a schedule for classroom use, but we are excited to add another tool to assist teachers and students with their learning. November is recognized as the month of giving thanks, I like to reflect on those blessings for which I am grateful. These include: the students, who come to school prepared to do their best each day; the parents, who make those home sacrifices that prepare our students for learning; the teachers, who dedicate time and energy to excellent instruction and to the creation of a positive learning environment; and the staff, who handle all the small but vital details that keep the school running smoothly for students and teachers. May you find things to be thankful we move into the holiday season. Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving! Mr. Higdon Chisholm s 2014 Teacher of the Year! 2 Posts by Plant As we enter a time of reflecting being more intentional with gratitude. I am reminded of how important it is for me to model this in front our students. Children truly are watching adults even when we don t realize they are watching. At Chisholm we have implemented P.R.I.D.E to help teach our expectations. Here are three guiding thoughts to help us lead our students in the right direction. Show Respect: Many of us were raised with the notion that respect is earned, and while this has some validity; Respect is a reciprocal relationship that is modeled and expected. Respect is conveyed not just in our actions, but in the tone of our voice and in our body language. We can model respect for our students when we are engaged listeners and when we give thoughtful and specific responses to what they are saying. We can also model respect when we take ownership for a mistake, by acknowledging it, by apologizing for it, and by correcting it. Think Out Loud: Just like working a math problem, sometimes it helps students hear what we are thinking and how we process information. We take for granted that students will automatically be able to this, but the reality is that we live in a technology rich society that verbalizing our thought process is not done to the degree it once was. Students need to hear us problem solve. They also need a safe place to practice being problem solvers. 3 Show My Human Side: To model that we are reaching the whole child and that we value their interests and not just their academic progress, we can share our own interests with students. Sharing about ourselves makes us approachable and real. I have used my own passions and experiences to connect with students to help them identify that I can understand some of the concerns that they are faced with. So as we think about things we are thankful for, let s model to our students what it looks like, what it sounds like and what it means to be thankful. All these guiding thoughts will help us reinforce what Chisholm P.R.I.D.E. should look like at school. BOOK FAIR The Book Fair is here! Classes will be scheduled to visit the fair from Tuesday, November 11th through Monday, November 17th. Please check with your teacher to find out which day your student is scheduled. We will be open after school Thursday, November 13th, until 5:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to select Christmas presents for your family. H a p p y T h a n k s g i v i n g

3 Come join the fun at Turkey Bingo Friday, November 21 5:30-7:30 Surprise Guest at Turkey Bingo this year You won t want to miss it! Be looking for more information in Thursday folders in the next few weeks. We still need donations of drinks and snacks. We also need people to help that evening. If you love to bake - please consider donating a homemade pie or cake for auction at Turkey Bingo. Counselor s Corner... Helping Children Succeed in School Now that the first nine weeks are over, are you wondering how to send your child the message that school is cool? Try these tips to spark learning excitement. Make it personal Look for ways to tie school lessons to your youngster s life. Example: If he s learning about verbs, ask him to name his favorite actions- eating, pretending, skateboarding. Relating subjects to his interests builds enthusiasm. Reward effort When your child works hard on an assignment, let her know you noticed. Example: You solved that tough math problem. Way to go! Focusing on progress, not just grades, encourages hard work and discourages the give-ups. Be a guide Invite your child on your own learning journeys. Examples: Tackle a craft project together using a how-to book; let her help you find information in the phone book or atlas. The desire to learn can be contagious! Have a happy Thanksgiving! BITS & BYTES from Mrs. Massey Timeforkids.com is an electronic magazine geared toward elementary age students with age appropriate news and articles. The site includes topics such as News, Kid Reporters, Homework Helper, and many Extras. Amazingkids.com is another news site that even carried an article about Amazing Kids in the Moore, Oklahoma area. Newsomatic is a current events app that is a daily newspaper just for kids. Once you download the app, you may view several editions of recent news. Visit these sites with your children and see what amazing conversations begin. Dear Parents, In the spirit of giving, First Grade will sponsor a Chisholm Food Drive for the Hope Center. Please send all non-perishable food items starting November 17th through November 21st. Your support for our First Grade community project is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, First Grade Students First Grade Teachers
