1 Through collaboration between school and community, we strive to foster an environment that promotes academic excellence and positive character, while accommodating the differences of our students in order to create lifelong learners. Dear Franzen Family, Quarter #1 is officially concluded. Report cards have been distributed and parent/teacher conferences are arriving soon. Listed below are our three dates for November conferences. Please make sure you ve established a conference time with your child s teacher. We strive for a collaborative environment that helps your student reach their full potential. We appreciate all of our room parents who volunteered their time to assist with Halloween parties. These parties were successful because of their planning and volunteer time. It won t be long before we are planning for our holiday parties in December. It is also worth noting that we have several parents volunteering on Thursdays for ICEE distribution and Friday for hot lunch days. We also have several parents assisting in our media center and assisting with vision and hearing screenings. Your support benefits all of our students. Reminder that you can find us on Twitter. Our username We are using this account to update parents on upcoming events, pictures from around school, and updating you on the Franzen Addition project. You can also find our partner schools, Peacock & Benson. This is just another way to keep you informed about the wonderful things we re doing in District #10. Please also help us support our community through our Toys for Tots toy drive that is starting in early December. As we get closer to December, more reminders will follow. Please send in a new toy or book for a child in need (no teddy bears allowed). Gifts must be unwrapped. Specifically, sports equipment for children over 13 is needed. There will be a box near the office to collect gifts. We look forward to encouraging our students to participate and to demonstrate the power of giving! As mentioned earlier, conferences are November 12 th & 19 th (4:30-8:30 PM) and November 23 rd (8:00-3:00 PM). In these conferences, you will be updated on your child s progress, the plan your child s teacher has for him/her moving forward, and data collected from some assessments. You can call the administrative center between 4:30 pm and 7:50 am to report the absence at then press 5 followed by Ext 1525 or you can call the school directly after 7:50 am at You can also send an e- mail to jrobertson@itasca.k12.il.us to report an absence. Please make sure you give your child's name, teacher's name and why they are not attending school. You must call the office every day your child will be out. Parents- We have quite of few items in our lost and found. Please stop and take a look when you are here for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Any items that are still here after Parent/Teacher Conferences will be disposed of. Thanks for your helping in getting your child back their items. Parents-In order to avoid interrupting your child s classroom after 12:00 noon with your change of plans, please send a note with your child/ren or call before lunch.

3 Bullying is a very important topic that has been discussed at school recently. The following information can be discussed in your homes to continue developing knowledge and skills about dealing with bullying. 10 WAYS TO BE AN UPSTANDER -Adapted from BullyBust 1.Help others who are being bullied. Be a friend, even if this person is not yet your friend. Go over to him. Let him know how you think he is feeling. Walk with him. Help him to talk to an adult about what just happened. (Just think for a moment about how great this would be if someone did this for you when you were being picked on or hurt!) 2. Stop untrue or harmful messages from spreading. If someone tells you a rumor that you know is untrue or sends you a message that is hurtful to someone else, stand up and let the person know this is wrong. Think about how you would feel if someone spread an untrue rumor about you. Don t laugh, send the message on to friends, or add to the story. Make it clear that you do not think that kind of behavior is cool or funny. 3. Get friends involved. Let people know that you are an upstander and encourage them to be one too. Sign the Stand Up Pledge, and make it an everyday commitment for you and your friends. 4. Make friends outside of your circle. Eat lunch with someone who is alone. Show support for a person who is upset at school, by asking them what is wrong or bringing them to an adult who can help. 5. Be aware of the bullying policy at your school and keep it in mind when you witness bullying. If there isn t a policy, get involved or ask teachers or front office staff to speak about how you can reduce bullying. 6. Reach out to new people at your school. Make an effort to introduce them around and help them feel comfortable. Imagine how you would feel leaving your friends and coming to a new school. 7. Refuse to be a bystander. If you see friends or classmates laughing along with the bully, tell them that they are contributing to the problem. Let them know that by laughing they are also bullying the victim. 8. Respect others differences and help others to respect differences. It s cool for people to be different that s what makes all of us unique. Join a diversity club at school to help promote tolerance in your school. 9. Develop a bullying program or project with a teacher or principal s support that will help reduce bullying in school. Bring together a team of students, parents and teachers to meet and talk about bullying on a regular basis and share stories and support. Discuss the hot spots where bullying most likely occurs (ex. the bus, bathroom, an unmonitored hallway) and what can be done on a school level to make sure students and teachers are safe and supported. Learn more about how to start an Upstander Alliance at and access free support to sustain your team. 10. Educate yourself and your community about bullying. For example: Why do kids bully? Where does bullying take place most often in your school? What are the effects of bullying? Why are people afraid to get involved? 4 Flu Facts for the Season 1. Transmission: droplets that are emitted when a person coughs or sneezes. Viruses and bacteria can last up to 3 days on a hard surface. The dirtier the surface the longer the virus lives. 2. Many people experience hospitalizations related to influenza each year. 3. Infants and toddlers are hospitalized at a higher *rate. 4. Remember people can die from the flu. 5. Children are infectious for several days prior to the illness and continue to be so for days. 6. Research indicates vaccinating school-aged children can have a great impact on reducing the morbidity and mortality in populations at high risk for developing the flu with complications. The most effective public health strategies for reducing the community wide effects of the disease are vaccinations and hand washing.. 7. Signs and symptoms of the flu - abrupt onset of symptoms, fever of 100 degrees or greater that last 3 or more days, headache, aches & pains, fatigue, muscle weakness, extreme exhaustion, cough, congestion, sneezing, sore throat, nausea, vomitting or diarhea. 8. Treatment - antiviral medication- has been shown to reduce the symptom severity and lessen the course of illness. In order to be effective they must be administered within hours after symptoms start. Remember controlling the spread of flu is a major public health issue at this time of the year. Any question please call the health office at your child s school. You will want to keep your child home if: A rash is present and has not been evaluated by a physician. A child*s oral temperature is100 degrees or above or is 1-2 degrees above that child*s normal temperature. IF A CHILD HAS HAD A FEVER, he/she must be free of fever, WITHOUT the use of a fever reducing medication (such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen), for a full 24 hours before returning to school. Your child vomits and continues to experience nausea and / or vomiting. Your child complains of severe, persistent pain. This should be evaluated by a physician. Your child shows signs of an upper respiratory infection (i.e., cold symptoms) and they are serious enough to INTERFERE with learning. There are signs of pink-eye (conjunctivitis) such as: the eyes were crusted with matter upon waking, there is itching in one or both eyes, or there are crusts on the lashes and / or eyelids. The child should be evaluated by a physician. There are open sores that have not been evaluated by a physician. There are signs of lice infestation, such as nits in the hair and / or an itchy scalp. Consult the school nurse or your health care provider for guidance. Children with head lice are allowed to return to school once they have been treated and been released to class by the school nurse.

5 Finally a great big thank you to everyone who helped with our Halloween parties! IMPORTANT REMINDERS PLEASE READ: 1. Please make sure your child brings their lunch every day. We cannot provide your child a lunch if they forget it. We do not have the personnel, materials or time for making your child a lunch. If you need to drop off your child's lunch, please put their name on it. We get many lunches and want to make sure your child gets their lunch. 2. When dropping off your child's instrument, please bring it directly to the front hallway under the bulletin board. 3. It is the PARENT'S RESPONSIBILITY to call the office when your child is going to be absent or late. You can call the absent line from 4:30 p.m. until 7:50 a.m. at press 5, extension After 7:50 call the school office and give the information to the secretary. If you leave a message or talk to the secretary, please give your child's name, reason for absence, teacher, and if you would like to pick up homework. Requests for homework must be made by 9:00 a.m. so the teacher can get it ready. If you ask for homework, please come and pick it up. It can be picked up after 2:30 and before 3:30. Homework requests in advance will not be honored. You must call the office every day your child will be out. If you send an to your child s teacher regarding an absence or change in their after school plans, please the office as well. Please jrobertson@itasca.k12.il.us. 4. If you are picking your child/children up early from school, please write a note. This way the teacher can have them ready along with their homework and you will not have to wait and will not have to interrupt the classroom. 5. If you need to make a bus change or sign up as a new rider, please note it will take minimum of 5 school days to make the change. Please plan accordingly. PARENTS, PLEASE CONTACT THE SCHOOL FIRST BEFORE MAKING ANY DAY CARE ARRANGEMENTS. A TRANSPORTATION CHANGE FORM MUST BE FILLED OUT BEFORE ANY CHANGES ARE MADE. 6. Franzen School closes at 3:30. The doors are locked at 3:30 and the office is closed. The Itasca Library and Wood Dale Library have copies of all Franzen's textbooks. 7. Please send an extra set of clothes to school with your child. They will be going out during the winter and if they do get wet they can change their clothes without having to disturb you at work or home. 8. If you have a new cell phone, work or emergency numbers, please send a note to the office so we can updated our records. We need current and working phone numbers for all students in case of an emergency. If you are going out of town or the country, please let the office and teacher know who to contact in case of an emergency. Please make sure we have current emergency numbers and people to contact if you cannot be reached. 9. Parents please note the following regarding after school plans: a. If your child rides the bus some days and walks other days unless we get a note from you or a phone call from you, your child will do what they are scheduled to do on those days. No changes will be made to their normal routine unless we hear from you. b. If your child is normally a walker and they are going home with another student, you will need to write a note telling us that they are going home with another student. We need notes from both parents even if your child walks home.

6 c. Children who do not normally ride the bus cannot ride the bus to go to a friend's house. You will have to pick them up and drive them to the friend's house. d. Please call to make any after school changes BEFORE 12:00. The office gets very busy at dismissal time and there is only 1 secretary in the building at that time. 10. Treats for Special Occasions No food items are to be sent to school. The approved treat guidelines list can be found on Page 38 in the Student/Parent Handbook or on the District 10 website in the virtual backpack. Food items or treat bags which contain food will be sent back home with the student who brought them.
