3 Cont d from page 1 Dear friends in California, I am proud to invite you to visit the Hillel Center at UCLA campus where we opened a great exhibit last week. Our Consulate, together with the Consulate General of Israel, and in cooperation with American Jewish Committee Los Angeles and Hillel at UCLA organized a unique exhibit about the military assistance by Czechoslovakia to Israel in during Israel s struggle and its war for independence. The exhibit is on display just until June 13, so please do not hesitate to visit it. The President of European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso visited California in early May. While meeting with Governor Brown, speaking publicly at Stanford University and Pacific Council in downtown Los Angeles, he promoted the trade between EU countries and California and the free trade agreement TTIP that is currently being negotiated between the United States and the EU. During his visit, President Barroso also met with the leadership of Google and other tech companies in Silicon Valley, with architect Frank Gehry, and attended dinner at the Getty Museum hosted by its Director Timothy Potts. I hope everybody enjoyed the third edition of the Czech That Film festival. Many of you came out to watch the newest Czech films presented here in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other cities on the West coast. More than 300 film enthusiasts attended the Opening Night Party and screening of Honeymoon and listened to the renowned director Jan Hřebejk at the USC near downtown LA and at the Roxie in Mission district in San Francisco. Almost 200 fans of Czech cinema showed up at the Closing Night Gala in both, Los Angeles and San Francisco, which featured the world premiere of Lousy Bastards directed by Roman Kašparovský. This fantastic cooperation with the USC Film School as well as with Roxie Theater brought great results and the attendance numbers were terrific. I hope that we will be able to offer the festival and continue these successful partnerships also next year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors and partners for their generous support, especially Czech Tourism, Milk n Honey, Shipito, Elma, Prague Studios, Pilsner Urquell, BayCzech, SVU LA and Sokol. Believe me, without them, the Czech That Film festival would not have happened. A special thank belongs to Alex Ago of USC, Mike Keegan from the Roxie, and Richard Pivnicka, the Czech Honorary Consul in San Francisco. I am also happy that the third edition of our popular Petrof Concert Series had such a fantastic spring this year when famous Czech violinist Pavel Šporcl came to Califonia all the way from Prague and together with his talented pianist Petr Jiříkovský brought the audience to its feet in both our cities. I am already looking forward to a concert of the exceptional Czech soprano signer Martina Kociánová, who will perform with her colleagues from the Czech National Theater in San Francisco on October 3, 2014 and in Los Angeles on October 5, This year, the annual Mutual Inspiration festival will be dedicated to the famous Czech-Jewish writer Franz Kafka. The official kick-off will take place on Sunday, September 14, 2013 at the Villa Aurora in Malibu. Besides a small reception, we will be listening to a reading from Kafka s works and to a short lecture on Kafka as person and writer. We will also present several screenings of films based on Kafka s books at the Consulate in October. I am also excited that the Czech schools in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and San Diego are growing and will successfully continue into a fall semester of Please, appreciate the efforts that the school organizers all over California devote to teaching children the difficult Czech language and into organizing activities outside of regular classes, such as celebrating the International Children s Day. In Los Angeles, the next event will take place at the Anneberg Beach of Santa Monica on June 8, 2014 at 2:30pm. To get more information about our events, please visit our website and Facebook page. The new regulations of Czech private law have also introduced new legal institutes such as right of construction, or trust fund enabling new asset management opportunities. 19 years of importing Lev Lion beers from the Czech Republic! Harvey Imports, a wine & beer distribution company, was founded by Milena Harvey Svobodová. Ms. Harvey moved to the United States in 1993, and has been importing Czech beers LEV (Lion) to the United States since There are three award winning labels imported to the US by Harvey Imports - Lev Lion Pilsener (světlá dvanáctka), Lev Black Lion Dark Lager (tmavá dvanáctka) and Lev Pale Double Bock (světlá čtrnáctka). All are brewed and bottled by Měšťanský pivovar in Havlíčkův Brod. Since the arrival of the first container in 1995, almost 3 million bottles have been sold. The customers in Utah have been able to purchase LEV in their state liquor stores as well as in selected restaurants and bars since Since last month, lovers of LEV in California can find their beloved beverage in BevMo (Beverage and more) stores all over the state. LEV is being shipped also to distributors in Illinois, Idaho and Washington. Harvey Imports is also importing four wines (Muller Thurgau, Frankovka, Rulandské a Vavřinecké) from Vinné sklepy Lechovice in Znojmo region. Their Muller Thurgau won the Top 10 under $10 award in The World Value Wine Challenge 2013 and the Blaufrankisch (Frankovka) was rated as Highly Recommended by the Beverage Tasting Institute. Harvey Imports is always looking for new distributors for their wines, which are presently being offered at Bistro Bohem in Washington, DC, at La Trattoria Bohemia in Sacramento, at Little Prague Restaurant in Davis, CA, at the Barrel Room and at Cafe Prague in San Francisco, and at other various restaurants in Illinois. Please check their website at for more information. Whether you have a business in the Czech Republic or you are just thinking about setting up a business there, we would recommend that you learn more about these changes because they will have an impact on your activities. As the Consulate cannot provide the full legal expertise in this area, we would suggest that you seek out services of some of the reputable law offices in the Czech Republic. For example, the Schoenherr law firm based in Prague and other cities within the whole Central European region has recently published its annual legal publication Roadmap that covers many of the changes brought by the new legal framework and is freely available online at: Page 6
