1 Unleashing The Power Of Music Voices And News From The GRAMMY Foundation And MusiCares FALL 2013 The Recording Academy Members Support Work Of The Foundations Bruce Springsteen capped this year s MusiCares Person of the Year celebration performing his single We Take Care of Our Own. The song aptly captured the spirit of the event and the work of the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares. Our programs nurture the next generation of music makers and tend to music professionals in need. Young students gain inspiration from their predecessors through GRAMMY in the Schools programs. MusiCares clients get on track toward healthy living through our free medical clinics, emergency financial assistance, and addiction recovery resources. These activities are bolstered by the involvement of Recording Academy Chapters and their members. From championing the new Music Educator Award to mentoring students at GRAMMY Camp programs and sponsoring MusiCares services, you have shown that we truly take care of our own. We are pleased to share this issue of our newsletter, Unleashing The Power Of Music, with you. 2 Music Supports Throughout the year, Recording Academy Chapters and their members support the GRAMMY Foundation and our programs. Whether through participating in a GRAMMY Camp Basic Training to allow high school students to spend a day with music industry professionals and listen to their stories and advice, or by representing the GRAMMY Foundation at a GRAMMY Signature Schools award presentation, music people who belong to The Recording Academy believe in the work of the Foundation s GRAMMY in the Schools programs and show it through their tireless support. This support is most recently evident in the new Music Educator Award that was established by the members and elected leaders of The Recording Academy in partnership with the GRAMMY Foundation. This award recognizes outstanding music educators for their incredible service and the undeniable impact they have had on their students. When we received more than 32,000 nominations by our April 15 deadline, we knew Academy members had embraced this award and helped to spread the word in their communities across the country. As the first Music Educator Award is presented during GRAMMY Week in January 2014, members can take pride in helping to foster a newfound appreciation for music educators across the country. Perhaps nothing inspires members more than the chance to encourage the next generation of musicians and professionals, so it is not surprising that you are champions of our annual summer GRAMMY Camp. The statistics are impressive. In the program s nine year history, members of Recording Academy Chapters across the country have generously provided more than $125,000 in scholarships to bring young people to GRAMMY Camp who would otherwise be unable to attend. This year alone, Recording Academy Chapters in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Florida, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Texas awarded financial assistance to eight campers totaling more than $22,000 in scholarship funding. The generosity of Recording Academy members reflects the philanthropic spirit of the music industry. In the case of GRAMMY Camp, it affords high school students from across the United States an opportunity to experience an interactive residential summer music program that focuses on all aspects of commercial music, with instruction by industry professionals in a highly collaborative and creative environment. Simply put, these resources are changing lives, and the students themselves say it best: The massive amount of knowledge and concepts I gained in the short period of time was invaluable. It definitely helped me become more in touch with the music business and how it works. Dominic Spitaliere, 2013 GRAMMY Camper, Electronic Music Production Jeff Greenberg, member of The Recording Academy s Los Angeles Chapter Board of Governors and CEO of the Village, speaks for many participating members when he says, Since I ve been associated with the L.A. Chapter Board, each year I ve met some of the most surprisingly bright and talented young people from all over the country through GRAMMY Camp. This truly is the future of our business and our organization. It s very exciting and that s why I support this GRAMMY Foundation program.

3 Music Protects MusiCares services and programs are open to anyone who is a qualified music professional from our Emergency Financial Assistance that covers life s unanticipated crises to our MusiCares MAP Fund that provides addiction recovery resources. Members have played a special role in MusiCares since the charity was established by The Recording Academy in 1989 to provide a safety net for music people in times of need. This support has helped launch and sustain our Healthy Essentials Program, which is entering its sixth year. This initiative is focused on proactive services such as hearing, dental and medical clinics, as well as workshops and panels on topics such as emotional sobriety, financial wellness, and vocal health. Members and nonmembers alike have attended numerous Healthy Essentials Programs. Over the past five years, MusiCares has done an impressive job of ensuring the health of music professionals. The statistics best tell the story. Since 2009, MusiCares has offered more than 175 medical and dental clinics, has been onsite at festivals and music events with close to 170 Safe Harbor Rooms for music people in recovery, and hosted more than 1,300 weekly recovery groups, among other events. We ve provided close to 20,000 music people both Recording Academy members and nonmembers alike with these services, including nearly 4,000 clinic clients, more than 5,000 Safe Harbor Room visitors, and more than 7,500 members of our recovery groups. These are just a few of the ways that MusiCares works year round to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of music people, and through their support, members of The Recording Academy share in the success of our mission. Each day, our staff works tirelessly to continue to provide these resources to members of our music community in need, and it s those clients who say it best: MusiCares health and dental clinics provide the wellness prevention that is so needed in our industry, especially for members having economic struggles. MusiCares assistance to this community is a real blessing. I look forward to seeing and attending what they will provide for us in the future. Vince Gill And Paul Franklin Visit GRAMMY Camp c On Aug. 7 multi-grammy winning country artist Vince Gill and legendary steel guitarist Paul Franklin made a special visit to the GRAMMY Foundation s GRAMMY Camp New York at Converse Rubber Tracks for a moderated Q&A session with participants. Breakfast With ELI a Over the last 15 years the GRAMMY Foundation s Entertainment Law Initiative has become the preeminent destination for discussion and debate about the most compelling legal issues facing the music industry. Breakfast With ELI featured a moderated keynote discussion with BMG Rights Management CEO Hartwig Masuch on Oct. 22 in New York City. It was an informal networking opportunity with a truly informative keynote discussion and Q&A. Fall Out Boy To Raise Money For Music Education a Multi-platinum GRAMMY-nominated band Fall Out Boy will perform a sold-out benefit concert for the GRAMMY Foundation s GRAMMY in the Schools music education programs on Nov. 29 at the Metro in Chicago.
