BUILDING INDIVIDUAL & WORKPLACE CAPABILITY
About Navitas Resources Institute At Navitas Resources Institute (NRI) we take a true partnership approach with clients in the design and development of programs and services that enhance individuals skills, build workforce capability, and enhance organisational performance. We understand the demands of industry and business, and tailor our approach to meet these needs. Our programs are developed in consultation with organisations and delivered by consultants with specific industry experience in order to achieve the best outcomes. Our programs and services deliver results that can be sustained in the long-term through the integration of company culture, policies and systems as part of training or development initiatives. While we work with all business and industry both in Australia and internationally, our particular focus is on the unique skill and capacity needs of the resources sector. NRI is part of the Navitas Group, an ASX 100 company formed in 1994 and now Western Australia s fifth largest company. Navitas delivers education programs to more than 80,000 participants annually across a network of more than 100 colleges and campuses in 28 countries. Each year, thousands of students choose to study with Navitas as their preferred option for learning English, accessing higher education studies, undertaking vocational training, preparing for their future careers and broadening their opportunities in life.
Our approach The Navitas Resources Institute provides organisations with enhanced outcomes through the development of their workforce, as well as giving the individuals within that workforce relevant, practical and transferable skills. Our approach is characterised by a number of key factors: Understanding the client needs An important aspect of our delivery model is the initial consultation between our client service team and key stakeholders within your organisation. Using appropriate consulting methodologies and diagnostic instruments, this process allows us to gain a thorough understanding of your needs and how we can help you achieve your objectives. Customised design Utilising the information obtained from our initial consultation, we work collaboratively with you to design a solution aligned to your company s strategy, culture and organisational objectives. This ensures the programs and services are relevant, practical and able to deliver quick wins, as well as long-term performance improvements for your workforce. Flexibility of delivery We recognise the importance of flexibility in delivering programs and services to minimise operational downtime, service multiple locations and work with varying rosters and swings. We achieve this through a number of factors, including: various delivery options including on and off-the-job, company specific training and cooperative training through combining organisations in a training syndicate experience and mobility of consultants to work in various locations, including remote sites smart utilisation of technology and online learning Return on investment A key objective in our work is to demonstrate program effectiveness, particularly the return on the associated investment. This return may be seen in various forms: definitive cost savings and efficiency gains, often delivered through real-life projects undertaken as part of our programs and services enhanced managerial effectiveness improved safety outcomes and decreased Lost Time Injury (LTI) rates In all of our engagements, our consultants will assist in determining the most appropriate measures required and report on improvements throughout the program. Long-term partnerships We strive to build successful, long-term strategic partnerships with our clients, based on achieving best practice and sustainable change to ensure a competitive advantage. Building trusted partnerships ensures long-term benefits and lasting value, allowing you to develop and grow your business.
Our programs and services Our core focus is on skills development and capability building in organisations, with a specific emphasis on the unique requirements of the resources sector. This is reflected in our service offerings, which concentrate on key issues facing the industry, such as productivity, project management, leadership effectiveness, workplace safety and logistics.
Our people and capabilities Navitas Resources Institute has a high calibre consultancy team with a variety of skills and backgrounds. Our consultants have extensive experience in consulting and training delivery in the resources and related industries. A distinctive factor in all our consultants work is their commitment to practical learning that is delivered in the organisation s context. By taking this approach, our consultants encourage understanding and outcomes that are readily transferrable to the workplace in order to create short and long-term performance improvement and workforce development. Partnered companies Some of the organisations our consultants have worked with: BHP Billiton Rio Tinto Alcoa Woodside Petroleum Monadelphous Downer EDI Cape Australia Toll Transport Ausdrill Norton Goldfields Barrick Gold RCR Tomlinson Workforce development pathway We believe in creating a development pathway for employees, starting at the team member level and progressing through to supervisory and managerial levels. This development pathway can encompass a variety of learning mechanisms to encourage skill development, from short courses through to coaching programs, accredited skill sets and full qualifications. We design our programs and services at three main levels then tailor our approach to suit the specific roles within our clients organisations: Programs and qualifications at Team Member level are generally undertaken by operational and administrative staff, new employees and subcontractors, all of whom might be demonstrating leadership potential or requiring specific skill training in order to enhance their competence. Employees who could undertake programs and qualifications at this level include team leaders, leading hands, new supervisors and others in first line managerial positions. The focus of our programs and services at this level is on employees transitioning from being individual contributors to leading others, either through the enhancement of their general managerial capability or through leadership development in specific areas such as safety, project management, operational efficiency or logistics. The level covers a variety of roles, including experienced supervisors, superintendents, team leaders, business and operational managers within the organisation. Our programs at this level focus on leaders who are established, to a greater or lesser degree, within their organisation or field of specialisation.
Our five key areas: Productivity & Efficiency Productivity and efficiency are crucial to delivering the greatest results from available resources. To achieve this goal, waste such as workforce inefficiencies, high stock levels and inappropriate process flows should be eliminated from the organisation. These lean concepts are widely used in manufacturing but are relevant across many different industries and operations. Our Productivity & Efficiency programs at the team member level focus on introducing key concepts and tools associated with the elimination of waste. MSS30312 Certificate III in Competitive Systems & Practices Short courses based on lean methodologies and tools: 5S Value Stream Mapping The next stage in workforce development associated with Productivity & Efficiency is more in-depth awareness and use of the tools and processes around waste minimisation, as individuals are encouraged to start leading the implementation of initiatives in the workplace. MSS40312 Certificate IV in Competitive Systems & Practices Short courses based on lean methodologies and tools Our programs at this level are aimed at those with managerial or supervisory responsibilities, who have a level of comfort and proficiency with lean tools and concepts. Advanced competitive programs Short courses based on advanced lean methodologies and tools
Project Management & Execution Project management is a key skill in the workforce today, particularly in the resources sector. Understanding of key principles, tools and concepts involved in project management is critical to achieving successful project outcomes around cost, schedule, quality and safety, which are crucial for projects of all sizes and scope. For operational employees who require an introduction to the concepts, tools and methods of project management, we offer a range of short courses, skill sets and full qualifications. Project Management Fundamentals Introduction to Schedule Management Introduction to Scope Management Our programs at this level are focused on providing a thorough understanding of the principles of successful project management and execution, so that employees can contribute to ensuring their projects meet cost, schedule, quality and safety objectives. BSB41515 Certificate IV in Project Management Practice Introduction to Project Management for Supervisors Programs at this level are aimed at employees who are leading, or beginning to lead their own projects and contributing more fully to wider organisational projects. Managing Project Governance Managing Project Stakeholder Engagement
Leadership & Management Managers and leaders now require more skills than ever to lead their teams. Enhancing the performance and effectiveness of individuals, teams and organisations is critical to a company s success. Building leadership and managerial capability through business skills including planning, people management and leadership training can have an immediate effect in the workplace. The fundamentals of leadership and managerial development are an important first step for staff. Vital skills, strategies and practical information to enhance workplace actions are key aspects in assisting prospective team leaders. Leadership Fundamentals Short courses and skill sets covering topics such as interpersonal communication and effective supervision This stage of development of leaders and managers involves the introduction and confirmation of key skills such as people management, problem solving, planning and organisational skills; it has been said, people leave managers, not companies. BSB42015 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management Short courses for emerging leaders, including: Personal Leadership Managing Others For employees at this stage of the talent pipeline, programs involve higher level attention to and involvement in understanding workforce development within an organisation. Short courses and skill sets around workforce development and planning
Safety & Risk Management A safe working environment is a fundamental requirement for employees across all industries. This is achieved via active engagement of the workforce to assess risks and hazards and to avoid incidents by adjusting the workplace and their behaviours accordingly. Effective safety and the administration of this through risk management is therefore the responsibility of all staff, not just those with a delegated health & safety role. Navitas Resources Institute s Safety & Risk offerings at the level are aimed at employees with little or no previous experience of working in a high risk environment. Incident Response Processes WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control For employees with more experience and a working knowledge of key safety concepts, we can offer full qualifications, short courses or modules focused on particular aspects of safety relevant to their role. BSB41415 Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety WHS Management of Contractors WHS Systems & Compliance Our Safety & Risk programs at this level are designed for employees who are required to lead safety outcomes for others, either as an explicit or implicit responsibility of their role. Responding to Critical Incidents Managing WHS Hazards
Transport & Logistics In today s marketplace, the movement and storage of products between manufacture, distribution and sale can be a source of significant competitive advantage for organisations. In order to leverage this competitive advantage, a range of diverse but related skills and abilities are required by an organisation s workforce. For level employees, we can provide a range of programs that give a thorough grounding in best practice Transport & Logistics principles and processes. Dispatch and Receipt Fundamentals Introduction to Stock Control Our programs at this level focus on beginning to achieve integration between elements and seeing the bigger picture of Transport & Logistics and the supply chain function. Organising Goods and Freight Transport Our advanced Transport & Logistics programs are for supervisory and managerial employees with a solid grounding in supply chain concepts and tools, generally gained through a combination of experience and prior qualification(s). Operational Procedures for Transport & Logistics Managing a Supply Chain
