4 Course information Overview This qualification is suitable for people who coordinate and maintain the Work Health and Safety (WHS) program in an organisation. It reflects the role of practitioners who apply a substantial knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts. Award Upon successful completion of the course requirements, participants will be awarded: BSB51315 Diploma of Work Health and Safety Who should attend? This course is suitable for those wishing to improve their knowledge and skills in line with a senior level health and safety position. Access to a workplace You will need to have access to a real or simulated workplace environment. International Skills Institute will provide a suitable simulated work environment as required. Entry requirements Candidates considering this qualification must meet the following requirements: Completed all core units in BSB41412 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety or equivalent competencies: BSBWHS402A Assist with compliance with WHS laws BSBWHS403A Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes BSBWHS404A Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control BSBWHS405A Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems, AND BSBWHS406A Assist with responding to incidents International Skills Institute can provide a Certificate IV WHS Unit course which covers the entry requirements listed above. This course is delivered by distance and/or blended training, blended delivery includes face-to-face workshops. Once you have satisfactorily completed the core unit course you will be eligible to commence the Diploma WHS course. 2

5 Diploma of Work Health and Safety units of competency Review the unit information below to see which units are covered in this course. This qualification contains 9 units of competency. Packaging rules Total number of units = 9 (5 core + 4 elective). 4 elective units must be selected from the elective units listed in the packing rules units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome. Selecting elective units Students may enquire about alternative electives not listed below. This includes students seeking credit transfer for elective units that meet the packaging rules for this qualification and students seeking to undertake alternative units of competency via distance or RPL. ISI will only provide alternative elective units if we have the training and assessment materials to cover the elective and a trainer/assessor with the relevant vocational competency. Unit Information BSBWHS502 Manage effective WHS consultation and participation processes This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage the identification, review, development, implementation and evaluation of effective participation and consultation processes as an integral part of managing work health and safety (WHS). It applies to individuals with responsibility for enabling people to be consulted about, and to participate in, WHS management and decision making across the organisation. These individuals will work in a range of WHS roles across all industries and apply a substantial knowledge base and well developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts. BSBWHS503 Contribute to the systematic management of WHS risk This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to contribute to the systematic management of work health and safety (WHS) risk. It applies to individuals who provide specialised knowledge, systematic approaches and guidance to a range of personnel. BSBWHS504 Manage WHS risks This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct work health and safety (WHS) risk management processes. It applies to individuals who manage WHS risks, based on the organisation s WHS management system (WHSMS), WHS information system (WHSIS) and risk-management approach (as covered in BSBWHS503 Contribute to the systematic management of WHS risk). These individuals will work in a range of WHS roles across all industries and apply a substantial knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts. BSB core + 4 elective 3

6 BSBWHS505 Investigate WHS incidents This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, conduct and report on investigations of work health and safety (WHS) incidents that have resulted in, or have the potential to result in, injury or damage. It covers conducting an initial assessment of the situation; establishing the scope and legal parameters of the investigation; conducting a systematic analysis to identify underlying causes and actions for prevention; and reporting on the outcomes of the investigation appropriate to the potential severity of the incident, which may include accessing specialist expertise. This unit applies to individuals required to investigate incidents in relation to prevention of future incidents. The unit applies to people who work in a range of WHS roles across all industries and who apply a substantial knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts. BSBWHS506 Contribute to developing, implementing and maintaining WHS management systems This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of elements of a work health and safety management system (WHSMS). It applies to individuals with organisational responsibilities for contributing to tasks in relation to elements of a WHSMS appropriate to the nature and scale of the organisation and its work health and safety (WHS) risks. These people will work in a range of WHS roles across all industries and will apply a substantial knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts. BSBWHS507 Contribute to managing WHS information systems This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to contribute to managing work health and safety information systems (WHSIS) to support work health and safety (WHS) management. It focuses on systems for gathering, managing and communicating information necessary for WHS management. It applies to individuals who contribute to the management of a WHSIS. These people will work in a range of WHS roles across all industries and apply a substantial knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts. BSBMGT516 Facilitate continuous improvement This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead and manage continuous improvement systems and processes. Particular emphasis is on the development of systems and the analysis of information to monitor and adjust performance strategies, and to manage opportunities for further improvements. It applies to individuals who take an active role in managing a continuous improvement process in order to achieve an organisation s objectives. At this level, work will normally be carried out using complex and diverse methods and procedures which require the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem-solving and decision-making strategies. BSBWHS509 Facilitate the development and use of WHS risk management tools This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to facilitate the development and use of WHS risk management tools. It applies to individuals with responsibility for risk management. These people will work in a range of work health and safety (WHS) roles across all industries and apply a substantial knowledge base and well developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts. BSBWHS410 Contribute to work-related health and safety measures and initiatives This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage the identification, review, development, implementation and evaluation of effective participation and consultation processes as an integral part of managing work health and safety (WHS). It applies to individuals with responsibility for enabling people to be consulted about, and to participate in, WHS management and decision making across the organisation. These individuals will work in a range of WHS roles across all industries and apply a substantial knowledge base and well developed skills in a wide variety of WHS contexts. 4

7 Course duration 36 Training Weeks Participants have twelve (12) months to complete the assessments from their start date. This course is delivered using a distance approach or a blended approach of learning. The distance approach will mean that you have a dedicated trainer mentoring you through the course. The blended approach means you will attend some classroom training, as well as self-paced and assisted distance study. Both approaches ensure you will have a dedicated trainer assisting you and encouraging you throughout your learning journey via phone, and Skype. Study option Blended study option Price $23,520 Distance study $23,520 Recognition of Prior Learning $23,520 VET FEE-HELP VET FEE-HELP is a loan scheme available to eligible students undertaking Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma qualifications.
