2 WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE RECOGNISED IN EVENT MANAGEMENT The Advanced Diploma of Events is the qualification that the meetings and events industry is looking for when employing professional staff at a senior level to carry out management tasks. There is a huge range of roles in the meeting and event industry as the industry is one which is quite varied. A person with the qualification of Advanced Diploma of Events will have wide-ranging, highly specialised technical event management skills with a strategic research, planning and communication focus. Event organisation and management takes place across the full spectrum of business and community activity. This qualification has particular relevance in the community, cultural, hospitality, sporting and tourism sectors. This qualification also indicates knowledge of managing staff, client and contractors as well as in areas such as the business aspects and financial management. The organisation of events is an important skill which is highly desirable in both the tourism and hospitality industries as well as many other corporate and government sectors. Apart from the specific event management skills required, working in the meetings and events industry requires general personal skills such as the ability to be flexible and problem solve, an attention to detail and communication skills. The Advanced Diploma of Events consists of 18 core units and 6 elective units (a total of 24 units). Often people have skills and experience in meetings and events although they have not been specifically employed or working in an event management organisation or the tourism industry. Most industries have the need for event management so if candidates are undertaking these roles in their employment then they should consider having them recognised. To gain the compulsory units for the qualification, candidates will need to be able to demonstrate that they can currently do some or all of the following: COMPULSORY CORE UNITS Manage quality customer service Research and evaluate event industry trends and practices Determine event feasibility Develop event concepts Evaluate and address event regulatory requirements Select event venues and sites Manage event staging Provide on-site event management services Prepare and monitor budgets Obtain and manage sponsorship Manage financial operations Develop and update legal knowledge required for business compliance Manage projects Manage business risk Establish and conduct business relationships Develop and manage marketing strategies Manage people performance Develop and manage public relations strategies
3 ELECTIVE UNITS You will be required to complete 6 elective units. A full range of elective unit options is included in the Self Assessment Questionnaire. Examples of elective units relative to a specific job outcome and context at this level are as follows: Independent Event Manager SITHCCC038A SITXEVT014A SITXEVT015A SITXEVT018A SITXEVT019A SITXMPR001A Plan catering for an event or function Develop conference programs Manage exhibitions Develop a transport strategy for an event Manage multi-venue events Coordinate production of brochures and marketing materials CREDIT TRANSFER Credit transfer is the recognition of formal training previously undertaken and which is deemed to be equivalent to a unit of competence. Credit transfer requires the consideration of documentation supplied by the training organisation where the person completed their study. This may include: Course outlines Copies of assessments the person may have completed during the program Credit transfer for programs completed generally more than five years ago must be supported with evidence which confirms that the person has kept up-to-date in the subject area There is no cost to the applicant for credit transfer where this documentation is provided. However, if additional assessment or training is required, fees will apply. RPL ENROLMENT FEES You may apply for RPL for all, or part of, course units. Those who have completed appropriate training and who have gained the required skills/competencies stipulated for unit/s of the course, may be granted credit upon substantiation of that claim. RPL evidence is assessed with consideration to relevance and currency. Fees include: RPL Assessor Fee RPL Assessment tools Statement of Attainment on successful completion Full qualification...$2, Units of Competency:...$195.00/unit 6-10 Units of Competency:...$150.00/unit 11+ Units of Competency:...$135.00/unit
4 TIPS AND HINTS TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR RECOGNITION To have skills formally recognised in the national system, assessors must make sure you have the skills and knowledge to meet the industry standard. This means you must be involved in a careful and comprehensive process that covers the content of all unit/s or qualification/s you can be recognised for. Assessment happens in a variety of ways. Being prepared can save you valuable time and hassle and make the recognition process stress-free for you. Here are some tips and hints for you: 1. Be prepared to talk about your job roles and your work history. Bring a resume or jot down a few points about where you have worked, either paid or unpaid, and what you did there. 2. Bring your position description and any performance appraisals you have from any event management industry organisation you have worked in. 3. Consider the possibilities for workplace contact. Are you in a workplace that is supporting your goals to get qualified? Would you feel comfortable to have the assessor contact your workplace or previous workplaces so your skills can be validated? 4. Think about who can confirm your skill level. Think about current or recent supervisors who have seen you work in the past 18 months and will be able to confirm your skills. The assessor will need to contact them. You may also have community contacts or even clients themselves who can vouch for your skills level. 5. Collect any certificates from in-house training or formal training you have done in the past. 6. You can speak with the Training Manager about other ways you can show your skills in the event management industry. These could be letters from employers, records of your professional development sessions, employers or clients in related industries or government agencies, acknowledgements, workplace forms (as long as they don t show client details) or other relevant documents.
5 The table below lists some typical examples of evidence that may be able to be used in your recognition of prior learning assessment: Type of evidence Direct evidence Examples of evidence Workplace observation by assessor or Q & A on the phone if workplace not accessible Demonstration of skills/detailed discussion Samples of work/certified copies provided Referees/third party report, completed by a work place peer Any published works for the workplace that can be sighted by the assessor Indirect evidence Industry awards Copy of current job specifications or position description Current Curriculum Vitae or Resume Letter or memos from your workplace Workplace training records Any evidence of promotions or changes of role/responsibilities Historical Evidence Copy of any past job specifications or position descriptions Past letters of support or recognition/awards Academic Records Any evidence from previous courses, statements of achievements, log book of training Any documentation from any previous employment that can support your claim for RPL Any community based involvement or achievements Please remember that you are not required to have all of the above, this is a guide only. Your assessor will discuss all evidence requirements with you. Often it is difficult to locate some of the information listed above so the assessor will arrange for some Q & A if required to support your claim.
