There is a risk of damaging these ines depending on operating parameters and pipe materia. Sewer and drain ine systems can be composed of vitrified cay, PVC, cast iron, or concrete. Vitrified cay pipe has been in use for sewer and storm drains since before PVC pastic pipe came into widespread use in the ate 1960 s and eary 1970 s, and is being used for many current instaations. Other materias such as fibergass/ epoxy resins and HDPE are being used in rehabiitation of od ines. The purpose of these tests was to determine waterjet operating parameters beow which no damage woud be caused to vitrified cay pipe or PVC pipe, the two most common materias, as we as HDPE, a materia used for sip ining of existing pipes. INTRODUCTION Tests were conducted to determine safe operating parameters to prevent damage to sewer and drain pipe materias. Variabes such as rotation, jet ange, and time affect the minimum pressure that wi damage these materias. Waterjet ceaning of sewer and drain piping is most commony performed at operating pressures between 10.5 and 28 MPa (1500 and 4000 psi), with fow rates varying from 30 to 300 pm (8 to 80 gpm). Typica sewer jetting arrangements have hose engths that resut in pressure osses of 2 to 10.5 MPa (300 to 1500 psi), meaning that the pressure at the nozze is 2 to 10.5 MPa (300 to 1500 psi) ess than the pressure shown on the gage at the pump. A pressures reported in these tests are pressures at the nozze. 2. TESTING Two basic types of tests were performed, one set with a stationary jet and the other with rotating jets. For the stationary jet testing, a singe nozze with fow straightener, 1.6 mm (.063 in.) diameter was mounted at 135 degrees to the pipe surface with a 25.4 mm (1 in.) standoff distance. For the rotating jet tests, a sefrotating swive was mounted within an inch of the inner pipe surface, iustrated in Figure 1. Rotation speeds varied from 150 to 300 rpm. Two nozzes with fow straighteners, 1.6 mm (.063 in.) diameter, were used in these tests. Ports in the head provided jet anges of 90, 135 and 150 degrees, iustrated in Figure 2. The rotating jets were eft in the same ocation for time periods of 10, 30, 60 and 120 seconds. One section of new 200 mm (8 in.) cay pipe was cut into quarters and used for a of the cay pipe tests except the comparison of three additiona sampes. One section of new 200 mm (8 in.) PVC pipe was used for a of the PVC tests. The damage caused by the rotating jets was measured in terms of voume of materia removed. This produces a vaue that can be expressed on a chart to show a reative comparison between tests and rates of increase. Figures 3 and 4 show a vitrified cay pipe sampe and a PVC pipe sampe used for the tests. 3. RESULTS 3.1 Stationary Jet Minimum Pressures Vitrified Cay Pipe The static jet tests in the vitrified cay pipe resuted in sighty better minimum pressure resuts than the rotary jet tests. The minimum pressure to damage the pipe was dependent on oca weaknesses; the rotating jets had a better chance of finding weak spots because they covered more area. 4 KMT Acquires Aqua-Dyne K MT Waterjet Systems has acquired Aqua-Dyne, a U.S. based company with annua saes of about $8 miion USD. The acquisition gives KMT access to a new growing market segment with significant potentia and wi create synergies with KMT Waterjet Systems. Privatey owned Aqua-Dyne, based in Houston, Texas, has manufactured high pressure waterjetting systems and accessories mainy for the U.S. market since the ate 1960 s. Its products are used in surface preparation, ceaning and concrete remova (hydro-demoition). These processes are more environmentay friendy aternatives to traditiona sand basting and grinding methods. The served market segments incude shipbuiding, petro-chemica and construction industries. The goba market size is estimated to $330 miion USD with an annua growth rate of 7 percent. Aqua-Dyne has a staff of 35 empoyees and saes of $8 miion USD, with an operating margin of approximatey 12 percent. More than haf of the saes are derived from the aftermarket, and the business has an instaed base of approximatey 5,000 pumps. The acquisition of Aqua-Dyne significanty increases our market potentia in the Waterjet area. By combining KMT Waterjet Systems existing organization, internationa experience and distribution channes with Aqua-Dyne s strong brand, we see considerabe growth opportunities word-wide, said Lars Bergström, President and CEO of KMT. Aqua-Dyne wi be a part of the Waterjet Cutting Product Area and was consoidated in the Group as of Apri 7, The agreed purchase price of $10 miion USD wi primariy be financed through bank oans. Carro (314) Waterjet Dismanting Of Automobie Tires I n 2002 Cornier et a.* reported a study of an interesting waterjet appication dismanting of automobie tires with high pressure waterjets. The main ideas wi be highighted here. Some statistics about automobie tires: >10,000,000 tons of tires are produced every year around the word Ony < 10% are recyced Ony < 1% are recyced in an economica way Their study is to use waterjets to separate rubber from the metaic structure whie producing a very fine rubber powder that can be used for pavement, sport ground, or schooyards. Their exporatory experiments incude these parameters: The part of the tires (tread, sidewa, hee) The structure of the tires (number and nature and ayers) Nozze stand-off distance (5 50 mm) Sant ange of jet/matter (90 to 30 ) Type of nozze (rotary, fat, etc) Nozze diameter ( mm) Number of nozzes (singe and mutipe) Water pressure (1000 to 4000 bars) Water fow Traverse speed ( mm/min) Rotationa speed (up to 1300 rpm) Jet direction reative to traverse direction (same or opposite) Traverse direction reative to thread or cabe Their findings incude the foowing: The feasibiity of the principe (separate rubber from metas and turn it into a fine powder) is proven. However the jet faied to strip some of the rubber that is shieded by the metaic structure. The optimum traverse speed for a 4-jet rotary head (0.2 mm nozze diameter) at 2500 bar of pressure is about 100 mm/min. The jet traverse direction shoud be parae to the tread. Rotation speed of nozze head has no significant impact. The direction of traverse speed shoud be opposite to that of jet veocity. The static jet was paced at the 135 degree position in the head. A pressure of 14 MPa (2000 psi) produced a sma hoe when eft in the same ocation for 10 seconds; when the pressure was reduced to 10.5 MPa (1500 psi) no damage was present after 120 seconds. 3.2 Effect of Pressure and Ange with Rotary Jets Vitrified Cay Pipe A series of rotary jet tests were conducted to determine the effect of jet ange on the maximum safe pressure in new vitrified cay pipe. Each of these tests was run for 10 seconds, after which the sampes were measured for voume of materia removed. Resuts are shown in Figure 5. The 90 degree and 135 degree jets both began removing sight amounts of materia at 24.5 MPa (3500 psi), but as pressure was increased, the amount of damage caused by the 90 degree jets grew at a Figure 5. The 150 degree jets began to damage the pipe at 49 MPa (7000 psi), with a sti ower rate of increase with increasing pressure. (continued on page 8) June 2006 WJTA on the web: Page 7

Three other sampes of vitrified cay pipe were tested using the 90 degree rotating jets for 10 seconds. These sampes came from different sections of a storm drain ine that had been in pace for over 50 years. They were in reativey good condition, however. The resuts are shown in Figure 6; two of the three pieces had the same minimum pressure as the primary test sampe materia that had never been used. There possiby exist cay pipe instaations, particuary in sanitary sewers where the pipe has been submerged for many years, where the materia has degraded to a softer condition and might be more susceptibe to jet damage PVC Pipe These rotary jet tests were conducted on PVC pipe to determine the effect of jet ange on the maximum safe pressure. 9 Federa Signa Pubishes Vactor/Guzzer Safety Manua New Handbook Provides Safety Information for Operators of Mutipe Vehices Federa Signa Environmenta Products Group has pubished a combined Vactor/Guzzer Safety Manua that serves as a singe source of safety training information for a variety of Vactor sewer and catch basin ceaners and Guzzer industria vacuum oaders. The new handbook is an updated version of two previous safety handbooks pubished separatey by Vactor Manufacturing and Guzzer Manufacturing. Vactor and Guzzer are subsidiaries of Federa Signa Environmenta Products Group. The best way to tak about safety is to provide a cear, consistent message across the board, which is the approach we took with the new Vactor/Guzzer Safety Manua, said Andy Current, project manager at Vactor. The safety manua begins by addressing basic safety information on the high-pressure water systems found on most Vactor trucks. Pressurized water can inject debris and bacteria deep into the skin. Even injuries that may appear to be minor can ead to serious infection and require prompt medica attention. The Vactor/Guzzer Safety Manua incudes a series of common sense tips, genera warnings and safety standards, such as wearing protective cothing, ensuring good footing and visibiity around the work area, shutting down before making repairs, working in teams of two or more and draining water in cod weather to keep ice from cracking vaves and fittings. The handbook aso covers a range of potentia hazards, from equipment issues such as operating around eectrica power cabes and safe vacuum vave operation and reief, to genera issues such as working safey in confined spaces and coping with static eectricity. Aso incuded in the safety manua is a ist of the typica abes and decas found on current Vactor equipment. The Labe section of the manua begins with an expanation of Vactor s five abe categories, which range from Danger (a red abe that warns of imminent hazard of serious injury or death) and Warning (an orange abe that notes potentia for serious injury or death) to ess threatening cautions and notices. The 90 degree and 135 degree jets both began removing materia at 49 MPa (7000 psi), whie the 150 degree jets first created damage at 73.5 MPa (10,500 psi). A three conditions increased at neary equa rates once the minimum pressure to create damage was reached. Just as in the vitrified cay pipe, a reduced ange of impingement aows higher operating pressures without damage to the PVC materia HDPE Pipe The HDPE pipe did not respond in the same manner as the other two materias, ikey because the HDPE materia is more pastic in behavior and a itte bit softer than the PVC materia. The minimum pressure for initia damage for jet anges of 90 to 150 degrees occurred at the same pressure of 49 MPa (7000 psi), athough the amount of materia removed increased at a greater rate with increasing pressure with the 90 degree jets. Figure 8 iustrates this data. Figure 10. Effect of Time and Pressure with 135 Degree Jets on Vitrified Cay Pipe 3.3 Time of Exposure with Rotary Jets These tests were conducted to determine if pressures beow the vaues determined in the previous tests woud create damage if the jets were eft rotating in the same pace for ong periods of time. The resuts show that if higher operating pressures are used, the too shoud be kept moving through the ine to avoid damage. However, if the too is deiberatey or accidentay eft in pace for an extended period of time, ower operating pressures shoud be used. Figure 11. Effect of Time and Pressure with 150 Degree Jets on Vitrified Cay Pipe Vitrified Cay Pipe Materia remova in the vitrified cay pipe at pressures ess than the 10 second maximum vaues occurred by expoitation of tiny pits in the materia, which woud grow with each successive pass of the jets. The 90 degree jets produced damage at 17.5 MPa (2500 psi) when eft in pace for onger than 60 seconds, whie 21 MPa (3000 psi) resuted in damage after 10 seconds. These resuts are shown in Figure 9. Figure 10 shows resuts for the 135 degree jets, which did not produce any damage at 17.5 MPa (2500 psi) after 120 seconds, whie 21 MPa (3000 psi) resuted in damage after 30 seconds. The 150 degree jets were tested at 28 MPa (4000 psi) with essentiay no damage after 120 seconds, whie 35 MPa (5000 psi) Figure 12. Figure 12 shows the increasing rate of materia remova by the 90 degree jets compared to the 135 degree jets. Both created damage at the same pressure, but when compared after 120 seconds, the damage caused by the 90 degree jets was 10 times as great PVC Pipe The mechanism by which PVC pipe was damaged over time at ower pressures was probaby due to fatigue of the materia, quite different than the vitrified cay pipe. No materia remova woud occur up to a point in time, and then suddeny a groove woud appear and grow. Spaing of the materia from the groove occurred once the cut depth resuted in confinement of the jet. Figure 13 shows the resuts for PVC with the 90 degree jets, where 42 MPa (6000 psi) did not remove any materia up to 30 seconds, but did after exposure for onger time periods. Whie 90 degree jets at 49 MPa (7000 psi) for 10 seconds or ess produced no damage, a pressure of 42 MPa (6000 psi) or ess woud be required for extended periods of exposure. Materia remova occurred at the same pressures and time periods with the 135 degree jets, as shown in Figure 14, but Figure 15 iustrates the reative magnitude of damage done by the 90 degree jets compared to that caused by the 135 degree jets. Figure 16 shows that it woud be possibe to operate up to 66.5 MPa (9500 psi) with 150 degree jets if exposure did not exceed 30 seconds. Figure 13. Effect of Time and Pressure with 135 Degree Jets on PVC Pipe HDPE Pipe The HDPE materia did not show much difference between the 10 second maximum pressure and pressures that woud damage it over time; this was ikey due to the greater pasticity of the materia compared to the cay and PVC. 49 MPa (7000 psi) did not damage the materia over a 30 second time period, and produced ony sight damage after 120 seconds. Effect of Ange and Time on PVC Pipe 4.0 CONCLUSIONS Tests were conducted in vitrified cay pipe, PVC pipe and HDPE pipe to determine safe operating parameters for waterjet ceaning without damage to the pipe materia. Rotating the jets increases this minimum pressure, as wi reducing the ange of impingement of the jet on the pipe wa. However, onger time spent on one area wi tend to expoit weaker portions of the materia or create fatigue, reducing the maximum safe operating pressure to prevent damage to the pipe. Through the use of a rotating nozze head, reducing the ange of the jets and keeping the too moving down the ine, pressures at the nozzes may approach 49 to 70 MPa (7000 to 10,000 psi) without damage to the pipe. However, if the too is deiberatey or accidentay eft in pace for an extended period of time, ower operating pressures shoud be used. For vitrified cay pipe, the maximum safe nozze pressure with an exposure time of 120 seconds with rotating 90 degree jets was found to be 17.5 MPa (2500 psi). However, if the exposure time was kept at 10 seconds or ess and a jet ange of 150 degrees was used, operating pressures up to 42 MPa (6000 psi) coud be used. Maximum nozze pressures for PVC pipe vary from 10.5 MPa (1500 psi) for a stationary jet to 38.5 MPa (5500 psi) for the 120 second exposure time with 90 degree rotating jets, to as high as 70 MPa (10,000 psi) with rotating jets, exposure times ess than 10 Figure 16. The HDPE pipe did not have as wide of a range dependent on exposure time and jet ange; the safe nozze pressures varied from 45.5 to 49 MPa (6500 to 7000 psi). June 2006 WJTA on the web: Page 13

Fow was awarded its first muti-miion doar contract with Airbus UK in December Under this atest contract, Airbus UK s Fiton pant wi use this Fow waterjet system to machine composite spars for the wing structures of the A350 when the system is deivered in approximatey 12 months. Under the prior contract, Fow s waterjet system wi machine the wing structures. Within Airbus, the UK is responsibe for design and manufacture of the wings and fue systems - a roe it wi continue to pay in the a-new Airbus A350 aircraft, of which approximatey 60 percent wi be comprised of advanced materias. 18 New High Output Pumps For Waterjet Cutting K MT Waterjet Systems, manufacturer of extreme-pressure waterjet equipment, has announced the atest addition to their growing ine of advanced high pressure waterjet equipment: the SRP intensifier. KMT offers the new SRP pump for those companies that need a stronger, more reiabe source of high pressure water in higher voumes. The new hydrauic-driven SRP pump, with a 10-minute sea change design, is much easier to maintain and is designed for very ong production runs.
