{ California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) requests applications from and nominations of accomplished, innovative education leaders for consideration as the new Associate Dean of the College of Health, Human Services and Nursing. The Associate Dean of the College of Health, Human Services and Nursing will be a critical member of the University s academic leadership team to support these initiatives. { 2
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY CSU Dominguez Hills, an urban university in the 23 campus California State University system, is located in Carson, in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. Its 346-acre park-like campus is situated in the historic Rancho San Pedro, the oldest Spanish land grant in the Los Angeles area. The campus is strategically located in the heart of a major technological, industrial, and transportation complex in Southern California. The area includes the massive Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach Southern California s gateway to international commerce. Cultural, performance, and sports venues in downtown Los Angeles are about 15 minutes away and the South Bay beach communities are a few minutes away to the west and south. The StubHub Sports Center, a 125-acre sports center developed by AEG and home to Major League Soccer s L.A. Galaxy and Chivas USA, is located on the CSUDH campus. With an enrollment exceeding 14,000 students, CSUDH is a federally recognized Minority-Serving Institution as well as a Hispanic Serving Institution and is among the most ethnically diverse universities in the nation: 45% Hispanic, 23% African American, 17% White, and 12% Asian/Pacific Islanders. CCSUDH is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and offers 45 baccalaureate degrees, 24 master s degrees, and a number of certificate and credential programs. While continuing to emphasize the liberal arts and sciences, the university offers professional programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Eleven programs hold accreditations from national professional associations: business administration, clinical sciences, computer science, education, health science, music, nursing, occupational therapy, public administration, special education, and theatre arts. The university is known for excellence in teacher education, nursing, psychology, business administration, and digital media arts. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY (continued) The College of Health, Human Services and Nursing (CHHSN) is home to academic programs for students interested in fostering physical, psychological and familial well-being of individuals. Our talented and dedicated faculty prepares professionals to work with populations in need of support and service in the areas of mental, physical and interpersonal health. The wide array of programs offered by the school share common features a rigorous curriculum recognized by professionals in the field, nurturance of high academic standards, and opportunities to practice skills in the field under expert supervision. THE POSITION General Assignment The Associate Dean assists in directing and overseeing the College of Health, Human Services and Nursing. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean of the College and acts on behalf of the Dean in his absence and as otherwise directed to do so by the Dean. The Associate Dean advises and consults with the Dean on matters that pertain to the governance of the College. The Associate Dean serves at the pleasure of the Dean. Responsibilities The Associate Dean advises the Dean on all matters related to students; participates in the formulation and implementation of policies in this area; provides the patient and judicious review and evaluation of student petitions, change of grade cards, student issues, and other matters that require the Dean s signature or oversight; acts as the College s liaison on a variety of committees that influence student academic policies or that have as their intent the development or enhancement of student support services; collaborates with faculty and staff from across the campus to provide leadership in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing programs that improve academic performance and/or persistence to degree; oversees academic scholarships in the College and reviews the Schedule of Classes to ensure that student needs are met; and performs other duties as may be assigned at the discretion of the Dean. The Associate Dean also oversees the academic year, winter session, and summer session course schedules, and is responsible for academic assessment planning throughout the College. 4
THE POSITION (continued) The Associate Dean also assists the Dean in the recruitment and evaluation of faculty in the College. The Associate Dean provides communication linkage with departments and programs on personnel and academic issues and ensures that the Dean has all relevant academic affairs information and documentation for the governance of the College. The Associate Dean manages all College facilities in accordance with University and College policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure optimal space utilization for instructions and research as well as a physical work environment to meet the needs and goals of faculty, students, and staff in the College. The Associate Dean also advises and consults with departments and programs on facilities issues and provides the Dean with relevant information for the Dean s response to requests. Other responsibilities include serving as ex-officio member on the College s committees and interaction with various divisional offices and departments such as Academic Affairs, Faculty Affairs, and Facilities Planning, as directed by the Dean. The Associate Dean represents the Dean on various committees and at University/College functions as requested by the Dean. The Associate Dean is responsible for overseeing all faculty curriculum processes in accordance with the University and College policies and priorities of the Dean. The Associate Dean also oversees programs and processes that promote collaboration and community and regional linkages in support of University and College goals. The Associate Dean performs other duties related to the general administration of the College as assigned by the Dean of the College of Health, Human Services and Nursing. 5
Qualifications An earned doctorate in a relevant discipline from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and a teaching and scholarly record meriting tenure at the Associate or Full Professor rank in an academic unit within the College; Successful experience coordinating or administering academic program(s); Excellent written and oral communication skills; Demonstrated effective problem solving skills; Demonstrated performance in making sound, independent judgments; Positive record of advising and mentoring students; Familiarity with the policies and procedures governing student academic life; Demonstrated understanding of the needs of students who differ from each other with respect to culture, gender, and age; Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially with faculty, staff, students, and administrators; and A strong commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the campus and surrounding communities. 6
