College of Education and Allied Studies CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, EAST BAY We are the future of the East Bay. Building the region s economic base as well as the vitality of its citizens, the College of Education and Allied Studies at California State University, East Bay is exceptional for training students of all backgrounds to profoundly shape the mental development and physical health of our local communities. Graduates of the college are thoroughly prepared, academically and through intensive field experience, to become the region s K-12 teachers and administrators, counselors and therapists, health advocates and fitness trainers, recreational planners, coaches, and hospitality managers dedicating their careers to the well-being and future of Bay Area communities.
Access to Inspiration, Excellence, and Opportunity The depth of integration between academic classes and professional fieldwork sets the College of Education and Allied Studies (CEAS) apart from its counterpart in most universities. Through rigorous field experience with school, business, and community partners, CEAS undergraduate and graduate students develop into community-minded educators, professionals, and leaders. Committed to finding innovative ways to help our students better serve their communities, we actively examine critical societal needs and work to fill them. Recognizing the inequities in our public schools for children of color and children raised in poverty, we have developed the state s first Educational Leadership for Social Justice Ed.D. This program trains leaders who will help break the cycles of inequity. And, anticipating the upcoming K-12 teacher shortage, we have targeted the large pool of teachers aides and are working with the Alameda County Board of Higher Education to channel them into a variety of community college and Cal State East Bay educational pathways to becoming credentialed teachers. The college offers a studentcentric learning experience focused on such high-demand fields as K-12 teaching, math and science education, mental health and counseling, health and fitness, and hospitality. CEAS faculty members recognized and respected by both the academic and professional communities for their expertise and accomplishments are committed educators who value student interaction. They inspire, mentor, and impart knowledge in a highly personalized learning environment that combines quality classroom instruction with applied research and on-the-job training. Private support for CEAS is an investment in its mission, strengthening and expanding its capacity to offer access to excellence and opportunity for all who are qualified.
Regional Impact. Regional Possibilities. The College of Education and Allied Studies is one of the region s top educators of professionals in the education, counseling, health and fitness, and hospitality fields. The college s commitment to academic excellence and opportunity produces farreaching benefits. The result is a highly qualified, committed, diverse and productive workforce that responds to pressing regional concerns, such as educational needs and the expanding demand for professionals in the health, fitness, recreation, and tourism industries. Supporting the college is a direct investment in the region s vitality. Each year, Cal State East Bay provides access to an award-winning college experience and education for more than 14,000 students including 1,400 in CEAS. Of these, more than 300 graduate annually from the college, fully prepared for productive careers and engaged citizenship. Of the university s more than 100,000 graduates, roughly 85 percent live and work in the region. In addition to their contributions as skilled knowledge workers, managers, entrepreneurs, and business leaders, they contribute mightily to the regional economy with more than $1 billion of annual income attributable to their CSUEB degrees. Thus, the effects of an investment in the College of Education and Allied Studies ripple across the entire region, affecting the lives and future of the region s 33 communities and 2.5 million residents.
Support the College of Education and Allied Studies. Invest in the Minds, Hearts & Hands of Tomorrow. Students attend the College of Education and Allied Studies at Cal State East Bay for an education that is uniquely personal, professional, achievable, and accountable to society s needs. They study with professors who have years of real-world expertise as K-12 teachers, school administrators, psychologists, counselors, hotel managers, and recreation and fitness professionals. Professors teach at CEAS because they believe in the college s commitment to balancing academic and professional pursuits. Student fees cover only one-third of the true cost of this remarkable education. While state funds cover much of the rest, private support is essential if we are to fund the innovative programs and partnerships that address such vital societal needs as the current shortage of math and science teachers, the imminent K-12 teacher shortage, and our country s expanding interest in health and wellness. To provide this critical margin of excellence, we count on those who share our vision, values, and passion for producing educators and professionals who strengthen our minds and bodies on a daily basis. Private support strengthens the college s ability to: recruit and retain an outstanding faculty that offers the highest level of teaching and research; improve academic programs, research, and instructional technology; ensure student participation in research and national conferences; offer supplemental support, resources, and services to ensure student success; expand outreach programs and access for students of all backgrounds; and meet critical, changing regional workforce and human capital needs. Supporting the College of Education and Allied Studies, is an investment in the minds, hearts, and hands of tomorrow s workforce and citizenry. MINDS: Creative and effective problem-solver, engaged in the quest for academic knowledge and the pursuit of a broad set of practical skills such as teaching, analysis, and management HEARTS: Collaborative team member and leader, deeply committed to promoting equity and social justice, both locally and globally HANDS: Highly skilled professional, armed with an education that values applied learning and hands-on experience acquired from working with recognized leaders in education, mental health, health and fitness, hospitality, and recreation Cal State East Bay s College of Education and Allied Studies with the support of generous and committed friends educates the minds, hearts, and hands of today s students and tomorrow s workforce and citizenry.
The College of Education and Allied Studies at Cal State East Bay Distinguished Training. Distinguishing Academics. CSUEB s Department of Teacher Education prepares the majority of teachers for K-12 schools in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, awarding approximately 270 multiple subject (elementary) teaching credentials and 170 single subject (secondary) teaching credentials annually. CSUEB is a leader in e-learning within the CSU system, offering five fully online bachelor s and master s degree programs as well as training for teachers of online courses. The Interdisciplinary Studies Department offers both a graduate certificate and a master s degree in Education with an emphasis in Online Teaching and Learning, which trains instructors to effectively teach online. All coursework is completed remotely, and candidates may participate from anywhere in the world. CSUEB s Kinesiology Department was the first department of its kind in the CSU system and one of the first in the nation to refer to itself as Kinesiology as a reflection of its true academic discipline. The Educational Leadership Department offers a unique Ed.D (educational doctorate) Educational Leadership for Social Justice focused on equitable outcomes for all students. The program is aimed at senior administrators in K-12 schools who will be prepared to lead major school reform efforts in the region. Graduate students of Cal State East Bay s Department of Educational Psychology, in fulfilling training hours through East Bay health agencies, provide the community with nearly 15,000 service hours each year in Marriage and Family Therapy, and more than 5,400 counseling contact hours, valued at almost $200,000 annually. WAYS TO SUPPORT THE College of EDUCATION AND ALLIED STUDIES Gifts to the college are not only the most important and most rewarding gifts you may ever make, they are also tax-deductible. Support the College of Education and Allied Studies, and invest in its work by specifying what department or program you wish your contribution to support. Or you can give without restriction, allowing the dean, a department chair, or program director to use your gift where it is most valuable. Gifts may be made by check, credit card, and online, either in full or in installments, based on a signed pledge. Gifts of property and securities as well as planned gifts that are part of an estate plan are also welcome.
