2 THE OPPORTUNITY To provide entrepreneurial leadership and management oversight in all aspects of the College s well established and rapidly growing Online Nursing programs. THE COLLEGE Saint Joseph s College was founded in 1912 by the Sisters of Mercy. At the heart of Saint Joseph s College is a Catholic liberal arts tradition and educational mission for men and women of all faiths and all ages. The college, which also administers a traditional four-year residential curriculum, is situated on 350 acres along the shores of Sebago Lake in Standish, Maine, a half hour from Portland, Maine s largest city, and two hours north of Boston. The traditional four-year college has an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students. Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), Saint Joseph s is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as Master s Medium. In May of this year, Dr. James Dlugos was appointed the 14th President of Saint Joseph s. He assumed office in July. Prior to his appointment, he served as Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ. 2

4 THE DIVISION OF GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL STUDIES With over 35 years of experience, Saint Joseph s College is one of the oldest accredited distance education providers in the United States. The College introduced distanced education in 1976 to serve the needs of busy adult learners who wanted to earn a degree through off-campus study. Since then, more than 9,400 adult learners from 50 states and 22 countries have earned their degrees from Saint Joseph s. Currently more than 3,200 students most with families, demanding schedules and active lives are pursuing their online degree. The Graduate & Professional Studies Division offers adult learners a way to earn a quality, accredited degree wherever it is convenient for the student and at a pace that fits an adult lifestyle. Students can start their program in any month of the year and set a pace that suits their life and family. For the duration of the program, a personal academic advisor will guide the student. Online education, offered through the Division of Graduate & Professional Studies includes: Master s degrees; Bachelor s degrees; Associate s degrees; Certificate Programs; Continuing Education Courses. Mission In extension of the Mission of Saint Joseph s College of Maine, the Division of Graduate & Professional Studies provides both college degrees and related education programs, and services to adult learners through various modes of delivery, including distance education, classroom-based courses and other innovative programming. For additional information, please visit the website for the Division of Graduate & Professional Studies ONLINE NURSING The Distance Education Nursing Department at the College was formed in 1974 and graduated its first class in Prior to 1974, Mercy Hospital SON students attended College science classes as part of their nursing curriculum. At that time, only BSN was at the University of Maine at Orono. All nursing programs are approved by the Maine State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The online nursing program offers RN-BSN and MSN degrees with MSN specialization in Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, and Family Nurse Practitioner. Currently, the online nursing program has nearly 800 students in the MSN program, over 400 students in the RN to BSN program, and 100 students in certificates or continuing education courses. Enrollment in the online nursing programs has increased over recent years. The majority of the enrolled students are employed full-time. Ages range from 35 years to 55 years. 5 THE POSITION The Program Director of Online Nursing provides leadership and management oversight for all online Nursing programs. Reporting directly to the Dean of the Division of Graduate & Professional Studies for operational issues and to the Chair of the Department of Nursing for curricular issues, the Program Director supervises the Online Nursing Program Assistant, Family Nurse Practitioner Lead Clinical Coordinator and Assistant Program Director. The most recent Program Director of Online Programs recently stepped down for medical reasons. Currently, the Assistant Program Director and the FNP Lead Clinical Coordinator are co-interim Program Directors, but will not be candidates for the permanent position. The Program Director of Online Programs is a twelve-month administrative position. Although the position is not tenured, the Program Director has full voting rights in the faculty senate. RESPONSIBILITIES The major responsibilities of the Program Director of Online Nursing include: Maintaining quality programs as evidenced by continuing national Nursing accreditation standards set by national professional organizations; Formulating strategic plans for relevant program areas; Overseeing responsive curricula development/revision according to quality standards and the requirements of accrediting agencies and other internal/external entities; Recruiting, developing, supporting and mentoring effective faculty competent to teach quality distance education courses for RN adult learners; Overseeing and evaluating program resources by development of annual enrollment projections by month and program, as well as other revenue and departmental expense budgets, and monitoring budget progress throughout the year, reporting on variances and adjusting activities for actual activity levels; Developing, monitoring and adjusting annual recruitment/marketing activities and initiatives to ensure the attainment of enrollment goals and appropriate positioning in regard to the competitive market; Monitoring student retention, progress, and satisfaction in regard to program assessment; Evaluating the educational and financial effectiveness of programs and courses; planning and reviewing the discontinuance process; monitoring data for trends and making appropriate adjustments; and Collaborating and communicating effectively and regularly with both the Dean and the Department of Nursing Chair to maintain consistency and quality among programs. QUALIFICATIONS The next Program Director of Online Nursing will be a visionary entrepreneur who has: A MSN and a doctoral degree in Nursing or a related field is required; an advanced practice Nurse Practitioner credential is preferred, but not required; 5

6 QUALIFICATIONS (continued) An active, unrestricted Maine Nursing license or the eligibility to acquire one; Strong teaching and education background, including administrative experience; Strong written and oral communications in the English language; Experience with adult learners, online education, and workforce development; Experience in the area of budgeting and planning and strong analytical skills; The ability to ideate, articulate, and implement a strategic vision for the Online Nursing programs; The ability to work collaboratively and effectively with different types of people; The ability to manage and prioritize multiple demands; The ability and willingness to work collaboratively as a Graduate and Professional Studies management team member; and The ability to be on-campus in Standish on a daily basis. 6
