Sentinel 3 Overview We care for a safer world The Sentinel 3 Mission is an operational mission in high-inclination, low earth orbit Full performance achieved with 2 satellites in orbit Sentinel-3 implements 3 core missions to deliver continuity to existing ones: Sea Surface Height products (Credit: CLS) Sea and land colour data, at least at the level of quality of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument on ENVISAT Sea and Land surface temperature, at least at the level of quality of the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) instrument on ENVISAT Sea surface topography data at least at the level of quality of the Envisat Radar Altimeter (RA) system In addition, the payload design will allow data continuity of the medium resolution Vegetation instrument (on SPOT4/5) measurements, enhanced fire monitoring capabilities, Along-track SAR for coastal zones, based on Cryosat-2 heritage, for improved in-land water and sea-ice topography. Sea Surface Temperature products (Credit: Met Office) Ocean colour products (Credit: MyOcean) Land cover products (Credit: ESA)

Sentinel-3: Continuity of ENVISAT/SPOT-VGT Main satellite characteristics 1250 kg maximal mass Volume in 3.89 m x 2.202 m x 2.207 m Average power consumption of 1100 W 7.5 years lifetime (fuel for 5 add. years) Large cold face for optical instruments thermal control Modular accommodation for a simplified management of industrial interfaces Launch S3A Nov 2014 with Rockot Launch S3B 18 months later with VEGA Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer GPS Microwave Radiometer Ocean and Land Colour Instrument X-band Antenna DORIS Antenna Observation Data Management 21.25 Gb (170 Gbit) of observation data per orbit Space to ground data rate 2 x 280 Mbps X-Band Laser retroreflector S-band Antenna SAR Radar Altimeter 1 ground contact per orbit 3h delivery timeliness (from satellite sensing)

SYNERGY will be possible combining OLCI and SLSTR data Synergy product and SPOT-VGT simulation SLSTR Close heritage to AATSR, with two scan mechanisms and a flip mirror to enable wider swath Key Improvements: Uses two scan mechanisms and a flip mirror to enable wider swath Nadir swath is offset to cover OLCI swath One VIS channel (865nm) is used for co-registration with OLCI swath Oblique view 55 deg inclination maintains a longer atmospheric path length compared to nadir for better atmospheric correction Number of spectral bands from 7 to 9 (new 1.38 and 2.25 um) for better Ci Cloud detection Increased resolution for VIS and SWIR channels (0.5 km @ nadir, TIR 1 km @nadir) Maintain dual view (nadir/oblique) scanning with increased swath of 750 km Increased nadir swath coverage to 1400 km 100% overlap with OLCI improved dual view coverage Ocean < 4 days (practically ~ 2 days, 1 sat dedicated Active Fire channels OLCI Pushbroom Imaging Spectrometer (VIS- NIR) Close heritage to MERIS (spectral bands and radiometric performances) Key Improvements: a. number of spectral bands (from 15 to 21) b. reduced sun glint by camera tilt in west direction c. Full Resolution 300m over land/ocean, d. improved characterisation, e.g., straylight, camera overlap e. improved (1 sat) coverage Ocean < 4 days, Land < 3 days (MERIS 15 days) f. 100% overlap with SLSTR

SYNERGY Products The Synergy processor of Sentinel-3 makes use of the combined information from the OLCI and SLSTR instruments to provide improved data for land surface analysis. The Synergy L2 processing uses of the enhanced spectral and angular capabilities of a combined instrument (the SYN instrument) to produce a product with atmosphere-corrected surface reflectance and aerosol properties. Synergy VGT processing provides products comparable to SPOT VGT-P and VGT-S. SYN Surface Reflectance SYN Fully atmosphere-corrected Surface Reflectance and associated error estimates. Synergistically retrieved from OLCI channels and SLSTR channels (both nadir and oblique views), except for gaseous absorption channels. SYN Aerosol Optical Depth SYN Aerosol Optical Depth SYN Aerosol Model Index Top of Atmosphere Reflectance product provided for the continuity of the SPOT VGT P product. Generated from atmosphere-corrected OLCI and SLSTR channels interpolated to VGT bands and upscaled to top of atmosphere reflectances. Aerosol load, expressed in optical depth at a given wavelength (550 nm), and associated error estimates. Synergistically retrieved from OLCI and SLSTR. Single view, three channel aerosol-robust SST Index into the table of 40 aerosol models used for retrieving the SYN Aerosol Optical Depth.
