VPN for the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, Windows Check the following before you try to connect: 1. That you have an upgraded anti virus programme/definitions. 2. That you have installed the latest updates from Microsoft. If you suspect that your computer has got virus/malware, do not connect with VPN. When connected with VPN, all your internet traffic is directed through NSSS servers. Only use the computer to study or work related tasks as long as you are connected with VPN. Install VPN (first time) This instruction is written for Windows XP with Internet Explorer 8, and for newer operating systems (Vista and Windows 7) you ll find similar options. You must have administrator rights on the computer to install the VPN client. The VPN installation uses Java. If you do not have Java Runtime Environment, you can download and install it here: http://www.java.com Free Java Download > Agree and start free download > Run > Run > Install > Close. 1. Open the browser Internet Explorer: Vista/Windows 7: Add the VPN adress to Trusted Sites: Tools menu > Internet Options > the tab Security > Click Trusted Sites > Sites. Under Add this website to the zone, write https://vpn.nih.no and click Add > Close > OK. 2. Type the adress http://vpn.nih.no in your browser. 3. Type your username (sometimes you have to write your emailadress) and password, and click Login. to Say yes to all questions about installing programmes.

It will vary what dialog windows that appear, and in what order. Follow the instructions on screen, and check the instructions if you don t know what to do. Note that the dialog windows may appear at the desktop (behind the Internet Explorer window). You can also get warnings and messages from your local firewall. 4. If the following windows appear, you do not have to do anything. The installation will continue automatically. 5. If you are asked to install Active X: a) right click at the information bar at the top of the window and choose Run Add on : b) When this security warning appears, choose Run or Install.

c) If you are asked to run a Javaapplication, click Run and tick off Always trust content from this publisher. 6. The VPN client is now being installed, and it could take a few minutes. 7. When the box Connected is ticked off, the VPN client is installed and connected. In the bottom right of your screen, you will also see that you are connected via VPN (padlock at the VPN icon): See the last page in this instruction if the installation fails.

The VPN client is now installed, and you can access the library s electronic resources (journals, electronic books and databases). Visit the library s homepage www.nih.no/library to choose resources. Disconnect the VPN client 1. Right clicking the VPN icon in the bottom right of your screen : Choose VPN Disconnect and you are disconnected. Next time you want to connect with VPN 1. If you find the VPN icon in the bottom right of your screen, you can right click and choose VPN Connect : Or you can choose Start > All Programs > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. 2. The following windows will appear. Type your NSSS username (or email adress) and password, and click OK. If the log on box doesn t appear, click Connect in the right window. Check that it says vpn.nih.no in this window.

Possible problems with installation/login Sometimes the computer will tell you that the installations failed even though it didn t. If the VPN icon with a padlock appears in the bottom right of your screen, the connection is established even though the warnings say something else. Try to install the VPN client once more to check if the installation really fails or not. If you previously have installed the VPN client (before March 2011), you have to check that there is no VPN icon in the bottom right of your screen: or Choose Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (Win 7: Programs and Features), find VPN Cisco AnyConnect in the list, and click Uninstall. Restart the computer and try the installation again. If the download of the VPN client fails, you may be told to install it manually. Follow the instructions on screen. Start at the top of this instruction and try again. Message about Protected mode/trusted Sites: See point 1 under Install VPN (first time. If your pop up blocker is activated, you have to turn it off: Tools > Internet Options > Privacy. Uncheck Turn on Pop Up Blocker and click OK. If Windows local firewall is activated, it can create problems. Choose Start > Control Panel > Classic view > Windows Firewall. Add an exeption for Cisco AnyConnect in the Windowsfirewall: Choose the tab Exceptions > Add Program > Choose Cisco AnyConnect and click OK. If you still have problems after following these instructions, you can contact ikt support@nih.no.
