3 Introduction This document describes how to configure and use Microsoft s Remote Desktop via Massey University s Virtual Private Networking (VPN) for computers running Microsoft Windows Vista. Once you ve followed the steps below, you will be able to connect to your work computer from both international and national locations. This guide assumes a basic knowledge of how to operate a computer running Windows Vista and concentrates on the special aspects of using this service. Prerequisites To make use of the Massey VPN Service you will need: To be registered for Virtual Private Network (VPN). If you are not registered please complete the following online form before continuing any further: Access to a computer with an existing internet connection (see Minimum Requirements). To be familiar with the Massey University Policy on the Use of Information Communication & Processing Systems, a copy of which can be found at Minimum Requirements Due to the amount of information/data that is transferred when connecting to a Massey University computer, it is recommended that machines not connected to a network use at least a 33.6kbps modem. For optimum performance a v.90 56kbps modem or other high speed internet connection (e.g. Broadband) is highly recommended. 4 Step 1 Setting up your work computer 1. Note down the IT number of your work computer, as you will need this in Step From your work computer, click on the Start menu and select Control Panel, switch to Classic View via the option on the left hand side of the window then double click on the System icon to show your computer s System Properties. 3. Under the Remote tab, place a tick in the box Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. 4. Return to the Control Panel as above, this time double clicking on the Windows Firewall icon, select the Exceptions tab and place a tick next to Remote Desktop. Page 4 of 7

5 Step 2 Enabling VPN on your Vista Home computer To enable VPN on a Vista computer please follow the Vista Setup instructions found at: Step 3 Connecting to Massey VPN 1. Double click Massey VPN shortcut on desktop (refer to Massey VPN setup instructions above if you don t have one) 2. This will bring up the Connect window enter your Massey login details, and click Connect. It should then say 3. Once the connection is established this window will disappear and you will be connected. Any other error contact the ITS helpdesk via an to [email protected]. Page 5 of 7

6 Step 4 - Connecting to your work computer via Vista remote Desktop 1. To access remote desktop click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection 2. Enter the IT number of the computer you wish to connect to at Massey. 3. If you receive a message similar to below indicate Yes to proceed. 4. You will then receive a login prompt where you can log on using your Massey credentials. Page 6 of 7

7 Once logged on you will then see your desktop and be controlling your computer at Massey. 5. To disconnect either click the X at the top right of the window and you will receive a warning message as shown below: Note: Disconnecting effectively locks your desktop rather than logging off, so when you return to your machine it will show as locked and you will need to Ctrl+Alt+Del to log back on. Or you can also choose to log off completely by selecting Log Off from the start menu. Page 7 of 7
