1 Connecting to an ASU computer with Remote Desktop The ASU computer you wish to connect to must be configured to allow remote access and you must find out the computer name, the methods are different between Windows XP and Windows Vista or Windows 7. Both methods are listed below. ***IMPORTANT*** The ASU Computer MUST be left powered on when you depart ASU The ASU Computer CANNOT have the Cisco SSL VPN client active on it while you are trying to remotely connect to it. This may be an issue if you use Advantage Desktop at ASU. The ASU Computer cannot use the VPN client while being remote controlled, you cannot remote in and use Advantage Desktop. The Cisco AnyConnect SSL VPN software must be installed and running on the computer at home, or wherever you are connecting from, to remote connect to an ASU computer. You do not need to be logged into the ASU computer, so it may be left at the screen asking you to press Control- Alt- Delete to log in. Nobody else may be using the computer though as connecting remotely logs you in and will log anyone else off with no warning. 2 Section 1 of 4: Configure the ASU computer with Windows XP 1 Click the Start Button 2 Click Settings

3 3 Click Control Panel 3a If you see the Category View, click Swit ch to Classic View

4 4 Double Click System 5 Click the Remo te tab

5 6 Verify the box next to Allow users to connect remotely to this computer is checkmarked 7 Make note of the first part of the Computer Name with its department prefix and 7 digit number (Ex: bit ) ***NOTE*** The 7 digit number is also the property control number of your computer, and is listed on a white sticker located usually

6 on the front of desktops and the bottom of laptops You will need this computer name when you try to connect to this system later 8 Click Select Remote Users

7 9 Verify it says ASURITE\( your ID) already has access below the user window. If it does not, then contact the Technical Assistance Center at wpcarey.suppor or x Click OK

8 11 Click OK 12 If your home computer is running Windows XP, proceed to section 3 If your home computer is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, proceed to section 4

9 Section 2 of 4: Configure the ASU Computer with Windows Vista or Windows 7 1 Click the Wind ows Pearl 2 Right Click Computer

10 3 Select Properti es 4 Click Remote Settings

11 4a A User Access Control window may appear, if so then click Continue 5 Choose Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)

12 6 Click Select Users 7 Verify it says ASURITE\( your ID) already has access below the user window. If it does not, then contact the Technical Assistance Center at wpcarey.suppor [email protected] or x5.2400

13 8 Click OK 9 Click the Comp uter Name tab

15 11 Click OK 12 If your home computer is running Windows XP, proceed to section 3 If your home computer is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, proceed to section 4

17 3 Click Accessori es 4 Click Remote Desktop Connection

18 5 Enter the ASU Computer Name, the department prefix dash 7 digit number you noted earlier. Add ".dhcp.asu.edu" to the computer name. 6 Click Options >>

19 7 In the Username field, enter ASU RITE\(your ID) 8 Checkmark All ow me to save credentials

20 9 Click Connect 10 Enter your Pass word

21 11 Click OK. This will connect to the ASU computer 12 When finished and ready to disconnect the computer, click the Start button in the remote desktop

22 13 Click Log Off 14 Click Log Off

23 Section 4 of 4: Connecting from a home computer using Windows Vista or Windows 7 1 Click the Wind ows Pearl 2 Click All Programs

25 5 Enter the ASU Computer Name, the department prefix dash 7 digit number you noted earlier. Add ".dhcp.asu.edu" to the computer name. 6 Click Options >>

26 7 In the Username field, enter ASU RITE\(your ID) 8 Checkmark Allow me to save credentials

27 9 Click Connect 9a A warning window may appear if you are connecting to a computer running Windows XP. Click Yes

28 10 Enter your Pass word 11 Click OK. This will connect to the ASU computer

29 12 When finished and ready to disconnect the computer, click the Start button in the remote desktop 13 Click Log Off
