History Based in the middle of Greenfield, Tame Valley Tennis & Squash Club is a local amateur sports club with a long history. Originally founded in 1923, as a tennis club, Tame Valley expanded to provide squash courts in the 1970 s. It now provides year round sports facilities and boasts four all-weather tennis courts (three floodlit) and three squash courts for its members. In recent years the club, which is owned and run by its members, has bucked the trend, by adding a third (glass backed) squash court, at a time when commercially run squash clubs have been contracting, or closing. Indeed, Tame Valley is now the only competitive squash club in Oldham. The club provides opportunities for both beginners and experienced players. Professional coaching, both for groups and individuals, is available for both tennis and squash throughout the year. Even during the winter months, the tennis courts on Saturdays are busy, with hardy youngsters of all ages learning the game. At a more competitive level, the club fields two mixed teams in the Oldham Tennis League (2009 Division 1 champions) and four men s and ladies teams in the Manchester League. Two junior teams play in the Manchester League. During the winter the club fields four squash teams on Thursday evenings in the North West Counties League. The largest squash league in the world! Away from the courts, the club has recently refurbished its changing facilities, and members can relax in the licensed bar lounge. 12
