Volume 13 Issue 2 January 2014- March 2014 Public Affairs Happy Holidays!!! Unit FLIGHT WINS Unit took place Dec. 4th. Over 50% of the cadet corps competed with their Flight in the following events: Knowledge bowl/jeopardy results: Bravo1st, Delta 2nd, Charlie 3rd, and Alpha 4th. Team building results: Bravo 1st, Delta 2nd, Charlie 3rd, and Alpha 4th. Drill Evaluation results: Alpha 1st, Delta 2nd, Bravo 3rd, and Charlie 4th. Overall Results. Bravo1st, Delta 2nd, Alpha 3rd, and Charlie 4th. Alumni cadets who evaluated our cadets capabilities: Geoffrey Crowley, Giovanna Torres, Danny Mendoza, Bri Miles, Connor Lindsay, Nancy Fonseca, and Gabriel Bogle. In addition, Marine recruiter SSgt Carter assisted with our team building activities demonstrating great teamwork and leadership for all in attendance! Color Guard Events CO-062 color guard teams support multiple events throughout the community. Pomona HS Veterans Appreciation Day, San Marion Retirement Home event, Colorado Rockies Baseball game, Veterans Day Parade, WHS Pep Rallies, WHS Football games, National Sojourners Veterans Appreciation and many more activities in our school/community. Color Guard Members: C/ Smith, Victoria; C/ Gonzales, Olivia C/ Baeza, Nelly; C/ Aguirre, Yanelly C/ Magerfleisch, Cody; C/ Zamora, Andrew C/ Kieckhaefer, Amanda; C/ Coria, Eduardo C/ Chu, Joseph; C/ Montoya, Katriona C/ Felipe, Yanic; C/ Rodriguez, Samuel San Marino Cadets went to San Marino to help serve lunch to veterans. They started by serving coffee. When all the residents were seated in the dining hall, C/ Zamora, Andrew commanded C/ Magerfleisch, Cody; C/ Kieckhaefer, Amanda; C/ Coria, Eduardo in the presentation of our Nations Colors. Cadets then assisted in serving the lunch meal and interacting with the residents. Our Squadron Commander, c/ Victoria Smith, MC d the event and Cadets helped pass out a set of personalize dog tags to all the veterans. Twenty-Five cadets took part in this event professionally demonstrating the heart of JROTC! Veterans Day Parade The veterans day parade was held in downtown Denver on November 9th. Unit CO-062 was led by Squadron Commander C/ Smith, Victoria. Our guideon was C/ Thomas, Jacob. The color guard team leading our unit was comprised of the following first year cadets. c/ Chu, Joseph, c/ Montoya, Katriona, c/ Felipe Lazaro, Yanic & c/ Rodriguez-Garcia, Samuel
Page 2 Volume 13 Issue 2 Upcoming Events Military Ball This very formal event places cadets in an environment where they practice their social skills, dining etiquette, and networking abilities. They learn how to plan, organize and manage everything from the invitations to the final dance of the evening. Cadets pass through a receiving line where they introduce themselves and their dates to VIP s such as the Adams 50 Superintendent, Military and local community leaders as well as school administrative staff. A catered meal follows the introduction of the head table allowing cadets to practice dining etiquette. Toasts are given and a moving POW/MIA tribute is given. The live DJ provides music for dancing after the meal and cadets learn they can have fun and act appropriately in a social environment. A King/Queen and their court are selected to preside over the evenings festivities. Male cadets are required to wear the Semi- Formal AFJROTC uniform and all ladies wear evening gowns. Tickets go on sale 13 Jan 2014 and parents are invited to attend. Invitations will be coming home after the Christmas! Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) The ASVAB test administration is scheduled for Monday 6 January 2014 at WHS in room A109. Show time is 8:30 am. Start time is 9:00 am. (do NOT be late) Any Sophomore, Junior or Senior is eligible to take the ASVAB. This test is required for entry into any branch of the military and identifies a persons administrative skills, mechanic and electrical knowledge as well as general knowledge pertaining to vocational skills. It is free but you must sign up with Col Jones before the Christmas! Awards Banquet The Annual Awards Banquet is scheduled for 1 May 2014, 1730 (5:30 pm) - 2000 (8:00 pm) at the Elk s Lodge in Westminster, just moments from WHS. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend this event to recognize the many accomplishments of our cadets! Cadets will wear their Class A uniform and guests are encouraged to wear business professional attire. Tickets will be available starting in April for a cost of $15.00. Cadets receive one free ticket for themselves. Included in the evening is a catered meal with desert, a slide show of all cadet activities, National and Local Awards presentations as well as the posting and retrieval of our Nations Colors and a POW/MIA presentation. Photographs of cadets and their families are taken and a digital copy is provided for each cadet. Fun Day April 19th The entire Squadron comes together on a Saturday to compete in a variety of team building activities and enjoy some pizza. Recruiters from the different branches of the military volunteer their time to run events and award prizes throughout the day. Fun day is a friendly competition between flights and includes competition in flag football, Ricochet, Volleyball, and War Ball. The Marines operate a fitness challenge, the Army operates a rock wall challenge, the Air Force provides a trailer that has a PS3 game challenge and informational videos. Fun day is a critical part of our team building and leadership curriculum and is a mandatory event for all cadets. They wear their AFJROTC PT gear and work as a team with their Flight to collect points in each event for the prizes handed out by the Recruiters at the end of the day. The event runs from 0800 1400 hrs (8 am 2:00 pm) at Hidden lake HS and is free!

Competition points are calculated by the First Sergeant. Items that go into the score are Uniform Evaluation, Flight/Individual Drill, Merits/ Demerits, Wellness, and bonus points. All cadets in good standing of the winning Flight will receive the Outstanding Flight Ribbon. So far Alpha is in first, Delta is second, Bravo is third and Charlie is fourth.
