7 Workforce and Apprenticeships Directly entering the workforce Joining an apprenticeship program Have a postsecondary career in mind and have taken the necessary steps to prepare for that position. Have possibly attended Central Nine Could currently be doing on the job training Plan on contributing to a family business after graduation Apprenticeship- An education opportunity in which students gain skills related to a specific trade through supervision and classroom instruction. 3-5 year program Receive wages, benefits, & education Can lead to an Associates Degree or Technical Certificate through Ivy Tech Must be at least 18 years old and have a High School Diploma or GED Contact the Indiana Department of Workforce Development for more information on available apprenticeship programs and how to apply for one.

8 Post Secondary Schooling ~ 2-Year Schools ~ ~ 4-Year Schools ~ Community Colleges Ex) Ivy Tech, Vincennes University Gain an Associates Degree or Technical Certificate Easily transfer acquired credit to a 4-year college or university Technical & Online Colleges Ex) ITT Tech Indianapolis Art Institute Kaplan, DeVry, Brown Mackie Can be proprietary schools, or for-profit. Focuses more on taking the essential classes for a trade and less on the college experience. Most 2-year schools do not require an SAT/ACT score. They provide their own aptitude testing. Public Colleges Ex) Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State University State money allows these institutions to be more affordable to Indiana residents. Private Colleges Ex) Butler University, Wabash College, University of Notre Dame and other out-of-state institutions. More expensive than State schools, but offer private scholarships to help subsidize the cost. 4-year schools require an ACT or SAT score, along with a good high school GPA and a challenging course load.

9 College Visits Start Now! Utilize the 2 college visit days wisely Visit colleges over spring break Visit colleges during the summer, schedule an overnight stay if possible. Attend the Greater Indianapolis Southside College Fair hosted by UIndy on March 11th starting at 6:30 pm
