The courses we offer are vocational, which means they help prepare you for a particular career. They re very hands-on which is why it s so important that our facilities are modern and match those that you will find in industry when you move on to work. As well as having great facilities, our is a welcoming and friendly environment to learn in and we have a great reputation for delivering courses to school-aged students. It s not just about the practical skills you ll learn either; you ll also gain social and personal skills, preparing you to be successful in whatever you do when you leave school. Information for Parents/Carers... To study on a 14-16 course at your child will need: Enthusiasm about their chosen subject Commitment to attend and work well To be nominated by their school and complete a satisfactory interview A good attendance and punctuality record and a good reference from their school To be able to complete assignments on time Written consent from you, their parent/carer to attend the college and follow our policies To tell us about any relevant medical issues and learning support needs your child may have. If your child s school agrees they can apply for one of these courses, they ll need to complete an application form. This will be sent to the along with a school reference. Shortly afterwards they will be invited for an interview. 4

Information for Parents/Carers... Full Time Placements The can enrol students onto our full time programme and part time courses. We support them in the same way as our 16+ Full-time students. At your initial interview an agreement is reached between the student and all parties concerned as to the suitability of the course and college environment for the individual student. Full time 14-16 placements are usually funded by the school the student currently attends. This is an opportunity for students to make a fresh start and develop vocational skills. The 14-16 GCSE programme is designed in a way to enable students to study the 3 core subjects, English, Maths and Science at GCSE. In addition to this a vocational qualification will be chosen from this booklet. Students will be in college 5 days per week. 6 www.swindon-college.ac.uk

Frequently asked questions... Do I need to attend an interview? Yes, everyone who applies for a place on a 14-16 course will need to come for a brief interview with one of our tutors. This is a friendly chat to find out about you and why you want to do the course. It will give you the chance to ask us questions. You may also be invited to an induction/ taster day. Do I need to wear a uniform to college? You do not need to wear school uniform but some courses require you to wear a uniform or safety clothes. I get a free school meal - what happens on my college day? We will provide you with a lunch voucher that you can use in the Refectory if you are at for a full day. What do I do if I am unwell and cannot come to college? I have help with lessons at school. What support is there in college? If support in class is needed this will be discussed with your school to arrange suitable support while at. Will there be older people in my class? No, all students will be aged 16 or under. Will I just be with people from my school? Most classes are mixed groups, so there are likely to be students from lots of different schools. Some schools may have arranged a discrete group, in which case only students from your school will be in this class. You will be notified by your school if this applies to your course. Business & Finance Qualification: Days & Times: Uniform/Equipment: Entry requirements: BTEC Business Level 2 with Money and Finance Skills 2 Years Year 10 Wednesday 9am-4pm N/A Predicted C+ student This course is ideal for learners hoping to find work in a variety of professional roles such as Administration, Accountancy, Personnel Assistants or Business Managers. Units to include: Exploring Business Purposes, Developing Customer Relations, Investigating Financial Control, Business Communication and Starting a Small Business. To complement this course we are offering the new and exciting Money & Finance Skills qualification set out below. In the current financial climate, it is important to learn how to manage money and avoid getting into debt. This exciting new course, in partnership with Nationwide Building Society, is an exciting look into Money & Finance. Working and Earning Saving and Spending Borrowing Money and Managing Risk Using Methods of Payment Running an Enterprise Activity Using Money Abroad Economic and Business Understanding. The Carousel Programme Qualification: Certificate 1 Year Days & Times: Year 10 & 11 Thursday 10am-12.30pm Uniform/Equipment: N/A This course is ideal if you haven t decided which specific area you wish to study. This is a great opportunity to sample three subjects rotating throughout the year. You can choose from: Brickwork Catering Childcare Electrical Installation Hairdressing Motor Vehicle Beauty Plastering Plumbing Wood Trades Youth Work. Following completion of this course, Year 11 students can apply to progress onto a full time Level 1 programme of their choice. Childcare Qualification: CACHE Level 2 2 Years Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 9am -4pm Uniform/Equipment: N/A Entry requirements: Predicted C+ student Working with children is one of the most rewarding and personally fulfilling career choices. At our goal is to help all of our students prepare for a range of caring careers such as nursery work and play work. The qualification explores the range of activities and experiences, which can encourage children to eat healthily, look at books, stories, poems and rhymes that may be used with children aged between 0-5 years. Construction Qualification: Days & Times: Uniform/Equipment: Entry requirements: BTEC Level 1 or Level 2 in Construction 2 Years Year 10 Wednesday 9am-4pm Overalls and safety boots Keen interest in subject All learners who are keen to explore the Construction industry will benefit greatly from this learning programme. The course will cover various building trades over the two years such as Carpentry, Brickwork, Plastering and Basic Building Maintenance. This can either be studied all day or for an afternoon session (1-4 pm) depending on what qualification you are working towards. Following completion of this qualification, learners can specialise in their chosen area through a full time programme specialising in Carpentry, Brickwork or Plastering. Creative Practice (Art, Design & Media) Qualification: Days & Times: Uniform/Equipment: Entry requirements: BTEC Units 2 Years Year 10 Wednesday pm N/A Level 1 Predicted D+ student Level 2 Predicted C+ student Are you a creative thinker? Do you enjoy working on practical projects? Then this could be the course for you. During the 2 years you will have the opportunity to experience a variety of different specialist areas of Art & Design and Creative Media. Introduction to Hairdressing Qualification: VTCT 2 Years Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 1-4pm Year 11 Tuesday 1-4pm Uniform/Equipment: Black polo shirt, black trousers & flat black shoes Entry requirements: Keen interest in the subject This qualification will give you an introduction into the exciting world of Hairdressing. You will cover the art of professional shampooing and conditioning, applying semi-permanent hair colours and styling hair. You will also learn about customer services and reception work. Engineering Qualification: BTEC - Level 2 Extended Certificate 2 Years Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 9-4pm Uniform/Equipment: Overalls and safety boots when in the workshops Entry requirements: Predicted C+ student Engineering is an continually expanding industry, especially in the Wiltshire area. Here at we have excellent industry standard facilities and workshops to cover Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering. This course is designed to cover units of all three areas. Flat black shoes Entry requirements: Keen interest in the subject This qualification will give you an introduction into the exciting world of Beauty Therapy. If you enjoy working as part of a team, meeting lots of people and have a passion for fashion then look no further than a career in Beauty Therapy. In the first year you will be given an overview of the beauty industry covering subjects such as the art of Make-up, Professional Nail Care and Facials. In Year 2 you will specialise in Nail Services. Either a full time Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications in Beauty Therapy or Nail Services. Performing Arts Qualification: BTEC Level 2 2 Years Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 9-4pm Uniform/Equipment: N/A Location: The Wilkes Academy The course is practical in nature and suitable for students considering pathways into the Performing Arts industry. Performing Arts will provide skills within all aspects of the three disciplines of dance, acting and singing. The course also helps you to develop skills in creativity and performance, technical skills and audition preparation. Wilkes Academy of Performing Arts, working in conjunction with, will deliver the best training there is to offer from established industry professionals. The Academy will ensure that every student reaches their full potential. Health and Social Care Qualification: BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate 2 Years Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 9-4pm Uniform/Equipment: N/A Entry requirements: Predicted C+ student If you want to work with people in a caring role, this course is for you. You will learn practical skills needed to be able to communicate effectively within a health and social care environment. You will understand factors that influence the health and needs of people and be able to plan to meet their needs. You will gain knowledge and understanding of diets and their impact on health. You will develop essential skills so you can plan and carry out creative and therapeutic activities in a health or social care environment. Jamie Oliver Home Cooking Skills Qualification: Jamie Oliver Home Cooking Skills 1 Year Days & Times: Year 10 or 11 Tuesday am Uniform/Equipment: N/A Entry requirements: Keen interest in the subject The focus of this course is on giving young people the skills to prepare delicious and nutritious home-cooked food using fresh ingredients, as well as an understanding of the value of passing on cooking knowledge. General Cookery Qualification: NVQ Level 1 in Multi-skilled Hospitality 2 Years Days & Times: Wednesday pm Uniform/Equipment: N/A Entry requirements: Predicted D+ student This qualification is intended for learners who wish to explore the hospitality sector. It will help them develop a broad insight into the industry, by encouraging them to develop and practise basic catering and food safety skills and gain relevant background knowledge required for employment in the hospitality sector or progression onto another learning programme. Learners will also have the opportunity to work in the Hospitality industry. The units you will cover are: Introduction to the Hospitality industry Customer service in the Hospitality industry Introduction to healthy eating Basic food preparation and cooking Introduction to food commodities Using kitchen equipment Food safety in catering. Public Services and Sport Qualification: BTEC Level 2 2 Years Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 9-4pm Year 11 Tuesday 9-4pm Uniform/Equipment: N/A Choosing a Public Services course at will allow students to take their first steps to joining the armed forces, the police, fire or ambulance services, prison or security services. It will also provide a valuable insight into the various roles and responsibilities a career in Public Services entails. Studies will include: Physical preparation Fitness testing Responding to emergency services Crime and its effects on society Outdoor and adventurous expeditions Leadership and teamwork This course will offer you the opportunity to study a half day of Sport and a half day of Public Services to gain two separate qualifications. Motor Vehicle Qualification: ABC Level 1 Award 2 Years Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 1-4pm Uniform/Equipment: Overalls & steel toe capped boots. This introductory course in Motor Vehicle Maintenance covers health and safety, basic car care and repair such as checking engine oil levels and changing a tyre. By studying the s Motor Vehicle course learners could be looking at a career in Automotive repair, brake and exhaust fitting, or breakdown services. On completion of this introduction course as a school leaver, students could either progress onto a full time Level 1 Diploma course in Motor Vehicle, or level 2 in vehicle fitting procedures. Cycle Maintenance and Repair Qualification: IMIAL Level 1 Award 1 Year Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 9-12pm Uniform/Equipment: Overalls & steel toe capped boots. Carrying out your own cycle maintenance is not only satisfying, but now a major growth industry. The 2013 Olympics, and Bradley Wiggins success in the Tour de France has made cycling more popular than ever. From September we will be offering a cycle Maintenance and Repair course. This would suit any student that is interested in cycle maintenance either as a hobby or possibly an employment route. This course will be run for half a day, over one year. It is suitable for students in either Year 10 or Year 11. Examples of some of the units that will be covered are: Remove and replace a cycle gear assembly Remove and replace a cycle rim brake assembly Carry out a systematic cycle check. On completion of this introduction course as a school leaver, students could either progress onto a full time Level 1 Diploma course in Motor Vehicle, or Level 2 in Vehicle Fitting Procedures. GCSE Computer Science Qualification: GCSE Computer Science Level 2 2 Years Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 9-4pm Uniform/Equipment: N/A Computer Science is all about problem solving. Analysing and modelling problems, designing solutions and then evaluating them. You ll learn about: How and why computers work Data and how it is transferred Programming Designing and developing applications (for smart phones) Project management techniques. It s using technology to come up with your own creative and practical answers to questions and problems.
