3 The Arts Fashion & Creative Crafts, Media, Design, Art & Performance The School of The Arts offers an exciting range of courses in the creative industries of media, design and art, fashion and creative crafts and performing arts. The School aims to give you the skills, experience and techniques to gain employment, or to progress to further and/or higher education. Courses are based at the Willesden Centre where you have the opportunity to study within an especially designed creative environment which is equipped with state of the art, industrially related equipment and technology. The School offers courses that support professional development for new designers, media producers, photographers, craftspeople and performing artists, with courses delivered by arts educationalists and practicing professionals. During the year students work together on many professional projects like public events and performances, exhibitions, web-sites, theatre productions, a magazine, a media show and a fashion show. In recent years they have gained experience with lead organisations and producers like the BBC, Brent Council, the National Theatre, the Park Royal Partnership, Archant Group local newspapers and SciTV. Fashion Fashion Study with us and you will be introduced to a broad range of skills and techniques to set you off on a career in the fashion industry. You will learn how to translate your design ideas into reality through pattern cutting and garment construction and see them on the catwalk in the annual College Fashion Show! Fashion and Clothing: BTEC Diploma/Award Code: AAPFP1DW The course is open to anyone interested in fashion and clothing craft. There are no formal entry qualifications but you will be interviewed. Competence in spoken and written English must be demonstrated as well as a genuine interest in working in the clothing trade. BTEC Diploma or Award, depending on the standard of This introductory course offers specialist vocational training in garment making, pattern-cutting, modelling, design and illustration, supported by theoretical knowledge. How will I be taught? You will be taught by lecturers who have worked in various sectors of the fashion industry. Skills are developed through a range of practical exercises supported by theoretical knowledge, using industrial machines such as lockstitch, buttonholer, overlocker, coverstitch and industrial irons. 4 Fashion and Clothing BTEC National Diploma Code: AANFP1AW Those who have the formal qualifications required for entry and who want to follow a career in fashion or make a career change. If you are planning a career in the world of fashion this course will provide you with a sound training. Four GCSEs grade C or above or BTEC First Diploma in Design (merit overall) or the GNVQ Intermediate Diploma in Art & Design. Entry is determined by interview and, where possible, you should bring a portfolio of work, including design and any craft or sewing work recently undertaken. You will be expected to demonstrate a willingness to learn, an ability to work independently and a genuine interest in working in the clothing trade. BTEC National Diploma in Design (Fashion & Clothing). Where can it lead? You may choose to progress on to higher education; alternatively, career opportunities vary from assistant pattern cutter and sample machinist to assistant designer and production assistant. Over the two years, you will be introduced to a wide variety of skills which will equip you to enter many areas of the clothing industry or progress to higher education. Our staff are specialists who teach pattern-cutting, modelling, garment construction, cutting room procedure, grading, textiles and design and illustration. During the course, there will be opportunities to improve your English and maths and to study computer skills. Every year, our students are given the chance to take part in a fashion show to exhibit their garment designs. Full-time for two years. Fashion Skills Codes: AAPLD1BW, AAPLD1CW, AAFE1EW This course is for those who wish to go on to higher level study or just to develop skills for their own use. No formal qualifications necessary but enthusiasm and commitment are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths. BTEC Award in Fashion & Clothing /NCFE Certificate in Creative Crafts at Levels 1, 2 or 3, depending on the level of The course covers a wide range of practical tasks such as cutting and making up garments including skirts, blouses, dresses and separates. You will be given training in the techniques required to give a professional finish and look to your garments. After some experience of sewing, you may also progress to learn some pattern cutting skills to enable you to make up your own designs. Part-time day or evening for one or two years. Tailoring (Ladies) Code: AAMID1GW This course is for those who have some experience of sewing. No formal entry qualifications are required, but some previous sewing experience is essential and you will need to present examples of your work at interview. You will be assessed on your English and Maths. NCFE Certificate in Creative Crafts at 4 The Arts

5 Levels 1, 2 or 3 depending on the level of The course introduces you to the techniques required for making up soft tailored garments, e.g. skirts, trousers, waistcoats, jackets and coats. It will involve working mainly with woollen type fabrics and learning the sewing and pressing techniques required to give a good professional finish to tailored garments. You will also learn how to cut, sew and apply the various types of lining and interlining used in modern soft tailoring. Part-time day for one or two years, depending on previous experience. Fashion Skills with ESOL Code: AAAJP1AW This course is designed for those for whom English is not their first language and who wish to study fashion and progress on to further study. There will be an interview and you will be asked to complete a written assessment. BTEC Certificate in Fashion & Clothing at Entry, Level 1 or 2 depending on the standard of your work and nationally recognised English qualifications. The course offers specialist training in cutting and sewing garments e.g. skirts, trousers and dresses, combined with six hours of English tuition. You are taught the full range of language activities and also receive language support in your clothing craft classes. You may progress on to more advanced courses or employment in the clothing industry. Full-time for one year. Creative Crafts Creative Crafts This area of study enables you choose from a range of specialist subjects. You can study one or more and build up units that will enable you to progress on to higher level study. It also provides an opportunity to gain the necessary design and technical skills for those interested in setting up a small craft business. Fashion Illustration Code: AAPAD1BW This course is for those interested in developing the techniques of fashion illustration. There are no formal entry requirements, but enthusiasm and commitment are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. Home Interiors Code: AABCP1BW This is a broad programme of study for those interested in all aspects of home design and decoration and who already have some skills and would like to develop them further or achieve a qualification. There will be an interview and you will be asked to complete a written assessment. NOCN (National Open College Network) credits in Home Interiors at Levels 1, 2 or 3 depending on the standard of your work. Subjects you will study include: design, business studies, IT and health and safety with the following optional subjects: soft furnishing, upholstery, interior design, painting and decorating, special finishes and textile crafts. Full-time for one year. Interior Decorating (Special Finishes) Code: AAMFD1CW This course is for those who are interested in a highly creative and hands on studying. No formal qualifications necessary, but enthusiasm and commitment are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. The course covers basic techniques in oil and water based painting e.g. broken effects, stippling, bagging, ragging, rag rolling, dragging/combing, marbling, distressing, wood finishes like staining and graining and stencilling on wood, plastered or papered surfaces. NCFE Certificate in Creative Crafts at Levels 1, 2 or 3, depending on the level of Interior Design Code: AAMFDD1BW, AAMFE1BW This programme is targeted at those who want a flexible course of introductory and applied skills, concepts and techniques of interior design for the home or those who already have previous experience and would like to achieve a qualification. No formal qualifications necessary but enthusiasm and commitment are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. NCFE Certificate in Creative Crafts at Levels 1, 2 or 3, depending on the level of Subjects covered include: plans, elevations, space planning, colour theory, visuals, costing, styling, lighting, soft furnishings and mood/sample boards. You will be given client based assignments and be expected to complete these to a high standard. 6 The Arts

7 Part-time evening or day for one year. Soft Furnishing Codes: AAMFD1DW, AAMFE1DW This course is for those interested in making soft furnishings. The course covers a variety of practical tasks from design stages to the making up of several items, e.g. window furnishings, cushions, simple loose covers and lampshades. You will be trained to produce soft furnishings using professional techniques. No formal qualifications necessary but enthusiasm and commitment are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. NCFE Certificate in Creative Crafts at Levels 1, 2 or 3, depending on the level of Part-time day or evening for one year. Textile Craft Code: AAMFD1FW The course introduces you to a range of techniques used for dyeing and decorating fabric. No formal qualifications necessary but enthusiasm and commitment are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. Upholstery (Modern) Codes: AAMFD1AW, AAMFE1AW This course is for those interested in learning the basic practical skills of modern upholstery. No formal qualifications are necessary but enthusiasm and commitment are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. You will learn about the basic skills required to repair and restore old and second hand items. You can also learn how to cut fabric, apply trimmings, work with foam and how to handle tools and equipment. You will upholster items using professional techniques e.g. drop-in-seat, box, stool or headboard. 8 Media, Design & Art Media, Design & Art Media Design and Art courses are available on either a part-time or full-time basis. Part-time courses Visual Arts in Painting & Drawing BTEC Award Level 2 Code: AAPVD1AW A broad based course of drawing and/or painting study. It is suitable for those with some experience of art or graphics who would like to improve and practice their skills in drawing and painting. This would be an ideal course to develop a career or a portfolio of drawing and painting to then progress onto a predegree programme such as the Access to Art and Design or the BTEC National Diploma courses. No formal qualifications are necessary but enthusiasm, a small selection of art work and commitment are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. BTEC Award in Visual Art: two Units (one GCSE equivalent) graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on the level of You will be introduced to skills and techniques which are developed and applied throughout the course and cover a range of drawing and painting media and approaches according to your needs. It is ideal for those wishing to develop a career or a portfolio or progress on to a pre-degree course such as the BTEC National Diploma in Media or Graphics or the Access Course in Art & Design or the Access Course in Media & Communications (19+). There are no formal entry requirements but enthusiasm, commitment and some experience of using computers (PC or AppleMac) are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. BTEC Award in Graphics: 2 Units (1 GCSE equivalent) graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on the level of You will be combining AppleMac computer based digital imaging processes using Photoshop software to produce a range of designs. There are no formal entry requirements but enthusiasm, commitment and some experience of using computers (PC or AppleMac) are required. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. You will receive a NCFE Level 2 Foundation certificate. You will be combining AppleMac computer based digital imaging processes using Photoshop software to produce a range of designs. You will learn a variety of professional computer graphics techniques and how to use Photoshop software to communicate your ideas within graphic arts. One evening a week for one year. Photography BTEC Award Level 2 Code: AAPPD1AW This course is for those who want to learn about photography and develop practical skills within the photographic darkroom and digital photography. It is ideal for those wishing to develop a career or a portfolio or progress on to a pre-degree course such as the BTEC National Diploma in Media or Graphics or the Access Course in Art & Design or the Access Course in Media & Communications (19+). There are no formal entry requirements, but you must be able to show some previous use of photography by presenting some of your previous work in film or digital photography. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. BTEC Award in Photography: two Units (one GCSE equivalent) graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on the level of You will be working with black and white and digital photography to give you a range of skills and experience. You will also learn about aspects of photographic process including the studio skills of composition, lighting, camera techniques and the darkroom processes of developing and printing. You will be assisted in selecting your own projects for assessment and learn about the essentials of the photographic process. One day a week for one year. Photography GCE AS Level Fine Art (Photography) Code: AALPE1AW The AS Level course is ideal for those wishing to build up existing photographic skills or for those with some photographic experience. The course is suitable for those with either an extensive portfolio of photography, or a previous photographic qualification like the AS or the BTEC Award. You will need to use writing, reading and research as part of this course. The course has an emphasis on experimentation and encourages you to challenge conventional approaches to photography as an art. Web: Course Information Centre:

10 You will need to present some photographic work and demonstrate that you have the ability to undertake the research, reading and writing tasks associated with the course. Owning your own SLR and/or digital camera may give you an advantage with this course. AS Level Art and Design (London Board). What would I study? This course enables both experimental and commercial arts based photographic processes to be developed through a range of set projects and your own individually set projects and you learn the techniques of using the camera and darkroom, lighting and digital processes. There is an emphasis on trying out visual techniques and the creative presentation of photography, as well as making sure that both the traditional methods of photography and digital photography are maintained and developed. How will I be assessed? As well as producing your own photographic work, you are also required to complete a written research project in an area of photography that interests you. Part-time evening for one year (AS Level) leading to year two (A2 Level). Willesden Centre GCE A2 Level Fine Art (Photography) Code: AALRE1AW The course is ideal for those wishing to build up existing photographic skills or for those with some photographic experience. The course is suitable for those with either an extensive portfolio of photography, or a previous photographic qualification like the AS or the BTEC Award. You will need to use writing, reading and research as part of this course. 11 Full-time courses BTEC National Diploma Graphic Design Code: AANGP1AW This course is designed for those who wish to study a range of professional technical skills associated with the graphic arts and is a vocational option to achieve the equivalent of three A levels in a professional media environment. Four GCSEs grade C or above or BTEC First Diploma (minimum Merit overall) or Intermediate GNVQ. BTEC National Diploma in Graphics Where can it lead? You can go on to BA Honours Degree or HND/Foundation Degree Level qualifications or employment in graphic design, illustration, animation, communication design, advertising, multi-media, photography, video, packaging design etc. Subjects covered include practical aspects of graphic design in drawing, 3D, Photoshop Design, Flash animation, photography and video. As well as developing skills with materials and technology, there are opportunities to investigate art and design history, modern graphic practices and to analyse the commercial industries associated within the graphic arts industries. How will I be taught? You will be given the opportunity to work in 3D and AppleMac studios, photographic laboratories and drawing rooms by yourself and in teams. You will be encouraged to experiment with different processes and techniques to develop your own style, for your own needs How will I be assessed? You will be graded at pass merit or distinction depending upon the quality of your work by completing assignment projects related to course units. Full-time for two years. Access to Higher Education (19+), Art & Design (3D, Drawing, Animation, Product Design, Interior Design, Photography) Code: AAAAP1AW This course is aimed at students of 19 and over who wish to pursue a career in the art and design creative industries, but who are unclear about which subject area to choose. The course is suitable for those who want to progress to higher education at degree or HND/Foundation Degree level to study art or design at university or art school. You should be 19+ and demonstrate that you are capable of sustaining the creative and written aspects of the course. You are required to provide a portfolio of art or design or photographic or media work at interview. LOCN (London Open College Network) Access to Higher Education, which enables you to go on to study at university or art school. 12 3D, product design, interior design, photography and time based media (video and animation). During the course there will be the opportunity to specialise and you will also be expected to research and write about the history of art, modern art and contemporary design. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed at either Level 3 or 2 on the quality of your work, your working practices and skills and also the development of your ideas and concepts. You will need 36 Level 3 and 12 Level 2 credits to achieve the qualification. Full-time for one year. BTEC First Diploma Media: Moving Image Code: AAFMP1AW This course is for those who wish to produce media products and develop media skills to progress on to further study. It is designed to encourage you to produce a range of media products that reflect your own interests and ideas. The course is a vocational option to achieve the equivalent of four GCSEs in a professional media environment. Minimum two GCSEs at Grade D, ideally including English and an art subject and a selection of art/design work. BTEC First Diploma: Media (four GCSEs equivalent) Where can it lead? You can progress on to the BTEC National Diplomas in Media or Graphics. Coursework is designed to give you broad skills in media production and research writing to enable you to develop specialist skills in advertising, animation graphics, video or photography How will I be taught? You will be given the opportunity to work in groups and by yourself to produce your own media products in studios and with AppleMac computers. How will I be assessed? Throughout the course, you will develop a portfolio of work for your grading of Pass, Merit or Distinction. Full-time a week for one year. BTEC National Diploma in Media: Moving Image Code: AANMP1AW This course is designed for those who wish to study a range of professional technical skills associated with the media industries. You will be given the opportunity to work in video documentary, video drama, journalism and magazine design, script writing, animation and advertising, individually and in teams. You will be encouraged to respond to your interests and needs by experimenting with different processes and techniques to develop your own style. How will I be assessed? You will be graded at pass merit or distinction depending upon the quality of your work by completing assignment projects related to course units. Full-time for two years. Access to Higher Education: Media Communication & Production Code: AAACP1AW This course is aimed at students 19 and over who wish to pursue a career in the media industries. It is suitable for those who want to progress on to higher education at degree or HND/Foundation Degree level to study a media related subject at university. You should be 19+ and able to demonstrate that you are capable and have the potential to complete the practical and written aspects of the course. You are required to provide written work, such as a review at interview along with any photography, creative writing, video or graphics that you may have. LOCN (London Open College Network) Access to Higher Education: Media Communication and Production. This qualification is equivalent to one A Level. Throughout the course, you will be introduced to a broad range of practical media practices in magazine production, video documentary, script writing, journalism, research, graphic page design, video drama and photography. You will work in groups and independently and, as well as the practical aspect of the course, you will be expected to research and write about the media industry, the theories surrounding current media debates and the effects of media in society. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed at either Level 2 or 3 depending on the quality of your work, your working practices and skills and also the development of your ideas and concepts. 14 Willesden Performing Centre. Arts If you are talented and ambitious and looking for training in the world of performance, then the College has courses to help you achieve your goal. You will learn about all aspects of performance, putting your skills into practice during public productions in the College theatre. Performing Arts BTEC Introductory Award/ Diploma Code: AADPP1AW These Level 1 qualifications are open to students aged who wish to undertake a broad introduction to performing arts with a focus on vocational training. GCSE grades D-G or equivalent. BTEC First Award in Performing Arts BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts Subjects covered include performance skills, financial management and administration and there is a strong focus on acquiring the personal and social skills required to successfully stage performance presentations. Full time for one year. Performing Arts BTEC First Diploma in Acting Code: AAFPP1AW This course is aimed at school leavers aged 16+ who want to gain a practical performing arts foundation on an acting/ theatre based course. A minimum of two Ds at GCSE. BTEC First Diploma in Performing Arts: Acting Where can it lead? Students usually progress on to the BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Performance) offered at the College. You will study basic techniques in acting, voice, improvisation, devising and movement and gain experience of performing in public. How will I be taught? Skills are acquired in classes, workshops and rehearsals throughout the year, leading to a major performance project. Through project based work, the course also enables you to acquire an understanding of how the performing arts industries operate. Full-time for one year. Performing Arts: BTEC National Diploma: Performance Code: AANPP1AW Who it the course for? The National Diploma is for you if you want a course which enables you to progress on to professional training or higher education. Four GCSEs at C and above, including English and/or a performing arts subject, or a BTEC First Diploma in Performing Arts (Merit overall). You are required to prepare an audition piece for presentation at interview. 14 The Arts

15 BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Performance). Classes in performance skills, including acting, voice, singing, movement and dance are part of an intensive programme. You will participate in a range of public performance projects over the two years, both in the College s theatres and on tour in the community/ local schools. You will also gain an understanding of how all aspects of the performing arts business operates. How will I be taught? Most of the course is project based, including devised work and scripted performance pieces. You will gain an understanding and experience of the environment in which the performing arts operate through visits to theatres and case studies of professional practice. You also develop critical and analytical skills required to evaluate performances through the study of plays, dance and music. You are given advice and guidance on progression opportunities, including preparation for higher level professional training or degree level study. Full-time for two years. Performing in Theatre: LOCN Access to Higher Education Code: AAATP1AW The course is an intensive one year programme designed to prepare you for entry to university or professional acting training. There are no formal entry requirements, but you should be aged 19+ and will need to attend an audition where you will be asked to do a two minute speech from a play. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills. Performing in Theatre: LOCN (London Open College Network) Access Certificate to Higher Education: Where can it lead? Most students from the Access course progress on to leading theatre schools and universities for higher vocational training or degree courses. Through regular classes in acting, improvisation, voice, singing and movement you will develop your performance skills. You ll explore the cultural and social significance of theatre from the Ancient Greeks to the very latest happenings on the fringe and in the mainstream today. Regular theatre visits are an integral part of the course. How will I be assessed? Assessment is continuous throughout your course and recognises your achievement in a variety of ways, mainly through practical assignments and performance work.
