All qualifications are nationally recognised giving you the skills employers want. Help with your English and Maths If you need help with your English or Maths there are special courses to help you. You may also improve your English and Maths skills while you are studying another subject. This can be done by extra help in class or by going to a workshop. Support for those with learning difficulties If you have a learning difficulty such as dyslexia, are deaf, visually impaired or have a physical disability, we can help. The College has disabled access in 95% of its facilities and is always striving to improve where access is difficult. You may be interested in our leaflet Support for Students with Disabilities. There are a range of English classes where you will be with other students who want help with learning English. We even run English tuition alongside your chosen programme of study. 3 Childcare & Education Childcare provision is rapidly expanding and there are more job opportunities becoming available. All the courses offered are nationally recognised and are part of the government s new qualification framework. You will be taught by highly skilled staff with a wide range of experience in early year s education and care. You can enjoy the benefits of their strong links with local employers. As part of the application process, you can discuss the options open to you with a member of the teaching team. You may be interested in returning to study after a break. The College offers you short and long term options to suit your study and personal needs. You may already have a childcare qualification and be looking for further study to improve your career options or just wish to take a course for personal development. You can study either day or evening options according to your experience and employment situation. The evening courses are only available for people with experience of working in childcare settings. You will go on work experience on all courses. The College has a wide network of work placements in schools and nurseries. There is also an early year s education suite and a learning resource centre where you can work independently, or with others. 4 Childcare & Education Certificate Level 2 Code: ABBE This course is for those wishing to work with 0-8 year olds. It enables you to find employment in a variety of day-care settings including private nurseries and homes. To join the part-time course you will be required to have evidence of having worked with children for a minimum of three years full-time or equivalent. CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Childcare & Education (CCE). The course gives you an introduction to many aspects of childcare and education. How will I be assessed? Each unit is assessed by a written assignment and there is a multiple-choice question paper at the end of the year. In addition, you will work with children and will be assessed on your practical work. Three days in College and two days work placement for one year, or two evenings a week plus three days work placement for one year. Childcare & Education Diploma Code: ABDC This course, equivalent to NVQ Level 3, is for those wishing to work with 0-8 year olds. With this qualification you would be able to find employment in a wide variety of childcare settings including schools, nurseries and private homes. In addition, this qualification is traditionally recognised in many countries across the world. If you wish to join the part-time course you will be required to have evidence of having worked with children for a minimum of two years full-time or equivalent. CACHE Diploma in Childcare & Education (DCE) (Formerly NNEB). Subjects offered cover health, education and social studies topics. You explore the way in which these aspects of theory affect children s lives and general development. You will apply this knowledge in the workplace two days a week. How will I be assessed? Continuous assessment of each unit takes the form of assignments and one final test at the end of the course. In placement, you are assessed by records of practical achievement and by portfolios of work completed with the children in the nursery or school. Three days a week in College or parttime two evenings a week plus two days in work placement for two years. Introduction to Pre-School Practice Code: ABBP This course is suitable for anyone who is interested in working with young children and can be a useful foundation for further study in the childcare and education field. No previous experience necessary. You will be assessed on your English and maths at interview. Introduction to Pre-School Practise (IPP). Where can it lead? On successful completion you can progress on to other courses such as the Certificate in Pre-school Practice or the CACHE Certificate in Childcare & Education. This is an introduction to working with children aged 3-4 years. You find out about how children learn through play and child development. 4 Childcare & Education
5 Three hours a week and one day work experience for 22 weeks. Certificate Code: ABBR This course is for those wishing to work with children under the age of eight. The course is open to women and men who are able to work at NVQ Level 2. It is particularly relevant if you have already achieved the PLA introductory course, Learning Through Play, or have previous childcare experience. Some previous experience working with young children. Certificate in (CPP). Two days a week in College and one day a week in work experience placement for one year. Diploma Code: ABDP This course is for those who wish to study at NVQ Level 3 and is particularly relevant if you have already achieved the PLA introductory course, Learning Through Play, or have had previous childcare experience. Some previous experience of working with young children. This course is validated by The Pre- School Learning Alliance. On successful completion you will gain a Diploma in (DPP). Two days a week in College and one day a week in a work experience placement for one year. Extending Childminding Practice Code: ABDE Who is this course for? This course is for childminders and also useful for early years workers working in a domestic setting, such as nannies and foster carers. It is recommended that you are 18 years of age or over on joining the course. You will need to be working with other people s children in a home-based setting. What qualification will I receive? CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Childminding Practice. Where can it lead? The Certificate in Childminding Practice provides the basis for the NVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care & Education. You could become an NVQ candidate and will have a head start in having generated some evidence towards the qualification. You will study: introducing childminding practice, developing childminding practice and extending childminding practice. How will I be taught? Lectures, workshops, group work, discussion, presentations and individual research. Web: Course Information Centre:
6 How will I be assessed? You will be working towards completing an assignment for each unit. The assignments will be relevant to your everyday work. One evening a week for one year. Caring for Children Foundation Code: ABBF This course is for year olds making a start in caring for children. No formal entry qualifications are required; however the ability to work with children will be assessed through interview. CACHE Foundation Award in Caring for Children. Where can it lead? After completion you may progress to Level 2 qualifications e.g. Certificate in Child Care & Education. You gain basic knowledge and understanding of the key areas in caring for children and the principles and values which govern childcare and education provision. You will learn about human growth and development from birth to old age, the care of children and how they learn through play. How will I be taught? A variety of teaching methods are used including discussion, worksheets, group work and learning support will be provided. Four days a week in College and one day in work placement for one year. Early Years Care & Education NVQ Level 2 Code: ABRY The course is designed for people who want to work with children in a care and education setting. Following the successful completion of Introduction to NVQ you might want to progress onto the NVQ Level 2 course. We can help you with a work placement, or ideally you will secure appropriate work experience. You will attend an interview and this will show evidence of your ability to work at this level and a commitment to the values of working with children. We can arrange for a police check for a small fee. What qualification will I receive? Upon successful completion of the course and assessments, you will receive a City & Guilds Certificate - Level 2 in Early Years Care. You will study child development, physical, intellectual, social and emotional development and language acquisition. You will learn how to assist early years practitioners, preparing and setting up activities and how to create displays and learning materials to support the learning outcomes for children. You will be able to use our learning resources centre. You will be able to improve your English and writing skills working with Key Skills tutors. How will I be taught? You will attend lectures, research reading material, carry out practical assignments in both College and the workplace. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed with completed College assignments. You will be directly observed in the workplace by your assessor. Full-time for one year. 6 Childcare & Education
7 Early years Care & Education NVQ Level 3 Code: ABSE The course is designed for people who want to work with children in a care and education setting. Following the successful completion of this course, you might want to progress onto the Foundation Degree course. It is expected that you are currently working in a childcare setting in a supervisory capacity and will be able to work towards the NVQ (Assessor) A awards. Evidence from initial and diagnostic assessment of your ability to work at this level is required. We can arrange for a police check for a small fee. You are required to demonstrate your ability to foster a commitment to the values of working with children. What qualification will I receive? Upon successful completion of the course and assessments, you will receive a City & Guilds Certificate - Level 3 in Early Years Care. foundation stage learning outcomes for children. You will study current child protection legislation and current good practice. It is expected that you are working at a supervisory level in an early years setting, and have authority to maintain relationships with parents. How will I be taught? You will attend evening lectures, research reading material and carry out practical assignments in both College and the workplace. You will be expected to attend at least one Saturday session at the College. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed on completed College assignments. You will be directly observed in the workplace by your assessor. The programme is offered on a part-time basis 6 hours per week over a period of 18 months. You will study child development, physical, intellectual, social and emotional development and language acquisition.
