Lcating Infrmatin n PrQuest Using the Basic Search T find an article n PrQuest: 1. In the search bx, input the article title, and press Enter. 2. This will bring up a list f articles with similar titles. 3. Search thrugh the list f articles and lcate the crrect article by cmparing the authr, date f publicatin, etc. If yu are nt lking fr a particular publicatin, authr, r article, yu may type in a key wrd and click n Search. See Figure 2-2. Tip: Be specific. The mre specific the key wrd is, the narrwer the search. Using the Publicatin Search If yu knw the publicatin title, date, and article title, yu shuld d a publicatin search. The steps, tips, and instructins belw will help yu cnduct a publicatin search. 1. Click n the Publicatins tab at the tp f the page. Figure 2-3 shws the screen that yu will see when yu click n the Publicatins tab. Figure 2-3: The PrQuest Publicatins Search Page 2. Click n the letter f the alphabet that represents the first letter in the publicatin title. Yu will then see a cmplete list f publicatins beginning with that letter. 3. Scrll dwn t find the publicatin needed and click n it. All available issues f the publicatin will be listed. 4. Click n the date r issue number needed. Tip: Brwsing Peridical Issues. If yu wuld like t brwse issues f a particular publicatin, this search is als useful fr ding that. Brwsing publicatin issues may give yu an idea r a fcus fr yur research.
Using the Advanced Search An advanced search allws yu t tailr yur search by giving yu ptins t limit r narrw yur searches (see Figure 2-4). 1. Click n the Advanced tab at the tp f the page (see circled tab). 2. On the first line under the heading Advanced Search, click n the first drpdwn menu and then type yur key search terms in the blank t the left f that ptin. 3. On the next tw lines, mre drpdwn menus prvide additinal ptins t limit r braden yur search. Chse an ptin fr each drpdwn menu n the secnd line and then fill in the blank. Using Brwse Sme PrQuest database prducts, such as PrQuest Nursing and Allied Health Surce, and ABI/INFORM Glbal ffer brwsing in additin t searching as a way f finding cntent (Figure 2-5). Imprtant t knw: When yu are using brwse, yu are simply clicking links, ultimately revealing relevant dcuments in a results list. Unlike searching, yu d nt enter any wrds r phrases as search terms. 1. Mre than ne brwse experience: The brwse experience can vary, depending n the database prduct and the nature f the cntent. Sme examples f the brwse experience in PrQuest include: Tpic explratins brwse an editrially defined tpic and subtpic presentatin such as Study Paths in PrQuest Nursing and Allied Health Surce Subject explratin brwse an editrially defined directry f subject terms, fr example ABI/INFORM Cmplete Specific Cntent explratin such as Industry and Market Research in ABI/INFORM Cmplete Study Paths in PrQuest Nursing and Allied Health Surce are presented as a hierarchical rganizatin f brad nursing-related tpics. When yu click ne f these brader tpics, yu expse related, mre fcused subtpics. As yu cntinue t click deeper int ne f these tpic study paths, yu ultimately reach a View dcuments link. When yu click that link, a list f relevant dcuments selected by nursing prfessinals displays. 2. Find a tpic: Sme database prducts, such as the Daily Brief Service in OxResearch, prvide a search bx and G buttn t let yu search fr a tpic within an editrially built hierarchy f tpics r subjects. The G buttn returns a list f matching (if any) tpic r subject links. 3. Breadcrumbs and tpic/subject explratin If yu are brwsing a tpic r subject hierarchy f links and then display a dcument frm the results list, the trail f links yu clicked t find that dcument may be presented at the tp f the dcument view. This trail is ften called a breadcrumb trail. A sample breadcrumb trail might lk like this: Business & Industry > Accunting & taxatin > Accunting > Accunting methds > Cst accunting >

PrQuest Tls That Will Aid Yu in Dcument Selectin PrQuest has a few tls that will aid yu in yur search fr schlarly, full-text articles that are apprpriate fr graduate-level research. After yu enter a search, PrQuest returns a list f matching dcuments called yur Search Results. By default, dcuments that PrQuest determines are mst relevant t yur search terms display at the tp f the list. 1. The search bx abve yur results list: Results nt what yu expected? Search again. The search bx abve yur search results reflects yur search criteria. If it des nt lk like yu fund the dcuments yu need, run a new search. Want t change yur search: Click Mdify search t return t the search page where yu created the search, with yur riginal search terms and any limiters displayed. Search within yur current results list: Click Search within t jump t the bttm f yur results list and use the search bx there t search within yur current results list nly. By searching within yur current results list, yu are fcusing r narrwing yur search. What des an asterisk (*) next t yur results cunt mean? When yu run a search, and yu d nt select the checkbx labeled Include duplicate dcuments, duplicate dcuments are remved frm yur results list. The asterisk serves as cnfirmatin that duplicates were remved. The number shwn is an estimated cunt after duplicate remval. 2. Suggested subjects pwered by PrQuest Smart Search: When yu run a search, PrQuest in additin t returning a results list autmatically evaluates yur search terms t prvide yu with subjects relevant t yur search. The subjects display as links in a bx titled Suggested subjects at the tp f yur results list. Click a subject t retrieve a results list f relevant dcuments. 3. Chse the amunt f detail yu want t display fr each item in the list: Items in yur Search Results list are available in either Brief view r Detailed view. Click the links abve the results list t switch between the views (Figure 2-6). Brief view includes: Title and date Highlighted ccurrences f yur search terms in the title Pricing infrmatin (if yu are n a transactinal payment plan) Details f the database that the item was fund in, including cverage infrmatin Citatin infrmatin (if yu are a subscriber t a particular database).

Dcuments Icns shw what kind f publicatin (surce type) each item was published in (Detailed view nly): An icn displays t the left f each dcument title in yur results list if yu have chsen t display yur items in Detailed view. The icn indicates what kind f publicatin fr example, newspaper r magazine the item was published in. Dcument title and infrmatin: The title f each dcument in yur list is a link. Click the link t view the dcument. Citatin infrmatin fr each dcument displays beneath the title. Fr sme dcuments, a brief snippet f the available full text displays beneath the citatin infrmatin.
Dcument preview: T the right f the title f each item is a Preview icn:. Mve yur cursr and pause ver the Preview icn crrespnding t any item in yur results list. A bx displays, cntaining the dcument title, abstract, and citatin infrmatin. 5. Check bxes and yur Selected items list: As yu search fr dcuments n PrQuest, yu may run acrss certain dcuments that yu wuld like t reference later. PrQuest gives yu the ptin t mark dcuments that yu are interested in (see Figure 2-7). A checkbx displays with each item in yur search results. Select the checkbx t add the crrespnding item t the Selected items page. Traditinally called a marked list, yur list f selected items is stred nly fr the duratin f yur current sessin. The list will n lnger be available after yu exit yur current sessin. T remve all the items frm yur Selected items page at nce, click the Clear link in the blue tlbar abve the Search Results.
With ne r mre checkbxes selected, yu can als click any f these links abve yur results list t perfrm the crrespnding task: Email: Email selected items t yurself and thers. Yu can specify the level f available dcument detail (Citatin, abstract, indexing, Full text, etc.) yu want t send, as well as selecting a citatin frmat. Print: Select a level f dcument detail (such as Full text if available), and display print-ready versins f the selected dcuments in ne cntinuus file. Optinally specify a page break between each dcument as they print. Cite: Create a frmatted citatin fr each selected item in yur preferred citatin style. Yu can then email, print, r dwnlad the citatins. Yu can als cpy and paste the citatins int a Wrd r ther dcument. Clearing yur selected items: After yu email, print, r cite a list f items, yu can quickly and easily clear yur selected items at ne time by checking the Deselect items when dne checkbx.
