The department is located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. The Students Union University of Greenwich (www.suug.co.uk) organises a variety of sports and social activities on campus. What will you study? The aim of this programme is to enable trainees to gain awareness of a range of key theoretical and practical issues relating to the teaching of ESOL in the lifelong learning sector. You will be able to consolidate your knowledge of how language and literacy is acquired and learned, and consider issues relating to language change and empowerment in light of a range of learning theories. You will also have the opportunity to review and analyse a variety of innovative approaches and resources for the teaching of ESOL, including the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, in a range of contexts and embedded models. You will be expected to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning strategies that generate enthusiasm for language learning and challenge and empower your learners. The programme consists of three courses: ESOL and the Learners (15 credits) ESOL Learning and Teaching (15 credits) ESOL Theories and Frameworks (15 credits)

Career opportunities For teachers/trainers already within the lifelong learning sector, these qualifications provide opportunities for full professional recognition, as well as enhanced career development and progression. Teaching and assessment This mode of study is intended for those people who are currently employed in postcompulsory education and who wish to attend classes each week. The programme begins in October and finishes in June. If your circumstances change and you are unable to attend classes regularly, you will be awarded the credit points for the courses you have successfully completed. You can use this credit when you resume studies at the University of Greenwich or another institution, providing this is in accordance with the appropriate Accreditation of Prior Learning conditions. The programme is entirely coursework- based. You will also be required to have four teaching practice observations during the programme. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will provide you with tutorial support, observe your teaching and provide written and oral feedback. Professional recognition This programme is accredited by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service, the organisation responsible for the verification of initial teacher training for FE/skills for the lifelong learning sector.
