1 Transport and Logistics Management MA/PGDip Greenwich Campus gre.ac.uk/business

2 Why study this programme? Transport-related activities comprise the second largest global business sector (after construction) and provide a huge range of employment opportunities in the UK, Europe and around the world. This programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), the leading professional body in the transport and logistics industry. On graduation, students are awarded the opportunity for full CILT membership after completing 2 years professional practice, which provides valuable professional recognition. The programme's structure and contents are compatible with equivalent qualifications for programmes offered by CILT, which ensures recognition by academics and business sectors, both in the UK and worldwide. The programme is designed to meet the needs of both graduates who have not previously specialised in logistics and transport and those who are interested in expanding their knowledge and practical capabilities in this area. The programme is also appropriate for prospective international students who wish to study the subject at a UK university. The main objective of the programme is to outline the key elements of transport and logistics management and planning. It explores the key notions of transport and logistics and examines new approaches to transport and logistics systems design and analysis. As well as the basic concepts of passenger and freight transport and local and global logistics, the programme focuses on contemporary issues, such as e-business, transport systems modelling and environmental issues in transport and logistics. This ensures the programme remains up to date and relevant to industry. Core subjects are supported by specialist lectures and tutorials in sustainability, risk management and the importance of ethics and due governance in today's business environment. Practical application of supply chain management software is taught throughout the programme. The programme includes a practical logistics consultancy course and visits to industrial locations. Students are encouraged to collaborate with business partners for dissertation projects and to attend and participate in seminars offered by CILT and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, which are given by guest speakers from industry. Why study with us? The Business School is renowned for high standards of teaching. Our staff combine a wealth of international business knowledge and industry experience with a commitment to support the learning of every student. The Department of Systems Management & Strategy spans the fields of information management, knowledge management, project management, strategic management, decision making, operations management, supply chain management, logistics management and entrepreneurship. We offer specialist undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in project management, entrepreneurship and innovation, logistics and transport, and purchasing and supply chain management. We have developed close links with relevant professional bodies to ensure that our programmes are closely matched to employers needs. Our programmes are

3 recognised by the Chartered Management Institute, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply. Collectively, our lecturers have a wide range of experience in the manufacturing, engineering, construction, IT and finance industries, in the UK and internationally. They have worked with organisations such as Pfizer, Deloitte, the Financial Services Authority, the British Council and UEFA. Our Supply Chain Management Research Group provides research and consultancy on closed-loop supply chain design and performance improvement. Our Sustainability, Technology & Innovation Research Group provides research that is of significance to society, the environment and the economy. Our research informs our teaching and helps us ensure our graduates are equipped with the skills and abilities to work confidently in industry. The Greenwich Campus is based on a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames. The university's largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding town is a bustling mix of shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. The business districts of Canary Wharf and the City are a short journey away on the Docklands Light Railway. There are also direct rail links into central London. What courses will you study? Supply Chain and Logistics Management: Strategies and Sustainability Issues (30 credits) This course will give you a critical understanding of the current academic and pragmatic approaches to strategies associated with logistics and supply chain management. You will develop a critical understanding of the major challenges faced in implementing integrated supply chain management strategies, as well as approaches for meeting these challenges. International Purchasing and Procurement (15 credits) This course will give you the necessary knowledge and skills to critically analyse international and global procurement and to evaluate risk analysis through different aspects of purchasing and supply chain management. It will explore current issues within the areas of supplier sourcing,

4 selection and performance, competitive advantage and profitability, operational effectiveness and overall organisational performance. Foundations of Scholarship and Research Methods (15 credits) This course will help you to develop essential scholarship skills that are necessary to write good extended essays and dissertations. You will acquire the knowledge and understanding of research design and methods needed for research. In particular, you will develop practical competence for academic practice and research in logistics, transport and supply chain management. Transport Management and Planning (Passenger and Freight) (30 credits) This course will enable you to critically appraise current issues in global, international and domestic freight and passenger transport planning and management. You will receive an overview of freight transportation and distribution and its importance to logistics, and examine alternative transportation modes, distribution methods, intermodal combinations and technologies. Strategic Management and Transport Policy (15 credits) Transport is already a large component of our economy and society. Historically, transport programmes were substantially about developing basic infrastructure networks. Nowadays, the focus is on the active management of systems and operating them to a maximum advantage in the face of a growing travel demand and capacity limitations. This course will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of how transport policies are designed, implemented and managed on a local, national and international level. Key facts Attendance: 1 year full-time (plus dissertation), 2 years part-time Entry requirements: You should have: A relevant, good-quality undergraduate degree from a recognised university or higher education institute (normally a minimum of 2.2 or equivalent). If you have an overall IELTS score of 5.0 or 5.5, you can undertake one of our five- or nine-week pre-sessional English programmes designed to help you improve your academic English before starting your degree studies. How to apply: Applications to postgraduate programmes should be made online at apply. Career opportunities Transport-related activities provide a huge range of employment opportunities around the world. There is a growing demand for transport professionals and logisticians who can plan and manage complex transport and logistics systems. The main players in the transport and logistics jobs market are passenger transport companies, including domestic and international rail, airline, shipping and bus companies. Opportunities are available in third-party logistics companies; supply chain logistics in both global and local manufacturing and service sectors; transport services at the national and local authority level; transport and logistics consultancies; international shipping; public sector planning; and where government and local authorities study and develop transport plans and assess the impact upon other urban developments. Teaching and assessment Programme content encompasses a range of education styles and includes lectures, tutorials, seminars and company visits.
