1 Social Work BA Hons Avery Hill Campus gre.ac.uk/health
2 Why study this programme? The aim of social work is to help people to manage or overcome their problems and to maintain control over their lives. Social workers advise and support people at times of difficulty. They deal with problems such as the effects of ill health, disability, family breakdown, bereavement, discrimination, poverty and disadvantage. They also frequently manage crisis situations where children or adults are at risk and where difficult decisions need to be taken to protect people from harm. Helping people in these situations is rewarding but often very complex and challenging. The role therefore requires a high level of commitment and resilience. People who use social work services are often supported by social workers or multidisciplinary teams employing social workers and other professionals, including nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists. Social workers need to be flexible, open to new learning and able to recognise when support may be needed. They must respond to a wide range of situations and are required to co-ordinate packages of services for a service user group. They work in partnership with people to help them manage changes in their lives and maintain or develop their independence. One of the social worker s key aims is to involve service users in their own care and support. Co-ordinating and managing support brings many tensions and dilemmas, not least because many service users have experienced discrimination and poverty. Social work education at the University of Greenwich has a strong track record of
3 achievement and innovation. Carers and service users helped design our programmes and regularly teach on them. Our degrees adapt to changes in government policy, social work practice and new knowledge, ensuring that our students are given the skills required to do the job. The BA Hons Social Work degree leads to the nationally recognised qualification in social work and eligibility to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as a social worker. Why study with us? The Department of Psychology, Social Work & Counselling, part of the Faculty of Education & Health, combines highquality teaching and research with a vibrant student experience. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in psychology, social work, counselling, public health, and health and wellbeing. We also offer other postgraduate options at Master s level as well as PhD programmes in health and social care and psychology. Our programmes provide our students with the opportunity to actively engage in critical analysis of contemporary issues and apply academic knowledge in a range of contexts. We collaborate with other departments and faculties across the university to ensure that the education and training we deliver is comprehensive and contemporary, providing the necessary tools for employment or further study. The department is located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. The Students Union University of Greenwich ( organises a variety of sports and social activities on campus. What will you study?
