1 SCHOOL OF COMPUTING & MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES Enterprise Software Engineering MSc Greenwich Campus
2 Why study this programme? This is an advanced programme of study involving software engineering modelling concepts and practice for building modern enterprise software systems, distributed programming, software technologies and architectures and e-commerce strategies for building Internet-enabled enterprise systems. The main tasks facing industry at the moment involve the design and development of new Internet-enabled systems, the integration of legacy systems into intranets or extranets, and advanced Internet publishing. There is a recognised need for the efficient management of the software engineering process using modern approaches to software project management. As a result, there is a pressing need for people with skills in designing, building and maintaining modern enterprise systems, project management and management of the software engineering process. These skills should be accompanied by an appreciation of the business context and market forces behind the new technologies. This programme educates students in the theory, practice, tools and applications necessary for the design, management and deployment of enterprise computing systems. Why study with us? The School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences offers an exciting, diverse and innovative portfolio of programmes. These are designed in close collaboration with industry and informed by worldclass research and enterprise, leading to great jobs in industry both in the UK and internationally. The Sunday Times University Guide has ranked our computer sciences and mathematical sciences subjects in the national top 10 for teaching excellence with the two subject areas rated 7th and 4th respectively. In the Guardian 2012 University Guide, mathematics at Greenwich was rated 12th in the country and second in London. The School consistently performs well in the National Student Survey, regularly achieving up to 100% student satisfaction in computing and mathematics subjects. We are recognised nationally and internationally for our cutting-edge research and innovative approach to curriculum development. In fact, we are one of the first universities in the country to use Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, which provides our students with remote access to our resources. We have pioneered programmes in computing, information systems, digital
3 and multimedia technology, interactive multimedia games, networking, Internet and web technologies, data mining, mathematics, statistics, decision science and computational science and engineering. Our students study on the university s Greenwich Campus, which is part of the Old Royal Naval College and on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings, designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding town is a mix of markets, shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous museums and tourist attractions in the country. By train, central London is only a few minutes away. What will you study? Content On this programme students: Evaluate the quality of the software development process Critically evaluate and apply modern modelling techniques and methods to the whole life cycle of real enterprise software systems Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the Java programming language Explore and critically evaluate a range of data models, database architectures and features supported by different database management systems Critically study the concepts, principles and theory of data mining and knowledge discovery in databases Use database built-in functions and features. Judiciously evaluate and select, design, and implement various types of interfaces to databases using modern tools appropriate for the task Critically evaluate the potential costs and benefits of implementation and calculate return on investment Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of mobile networks and application development Demonstrate an understanding of network management issues and standards Adopt a systematic approach to trouble shooting and resolving common network problems Describe and discuss the issues surrounding web design and development Deploy, use and evaluate web services and associated XML technologies Understand the management of creating/maintaining a security policy to ISO standards Configure and securely manage operating systems using existing tools Courses Project a substantial individual project on a topic chosen by the student (60 credits) Enterprise Patterns and Frameworks Enterprise Software Engineering Development Enterprise System Integration Programming Enterprise Components Software Engineering Management User-Centred Web Engineering PLUS Two additional options from: High-Performance Systems Engineering Mobile Application Development Mobile Technologies Business Intelligence and Data Mining
